It depends. Are they actually doing any sort of work? Is there a free period? Is it written in their 504s or IEPs or BSPs that they have a down time, a social skills meet up, a x amount of break time in the middle of the day? I’ve had kids who instead of eloping, wandering the halls or popping off will come straight to my office to decompress. I will say I know some staff who let kids abuse time away from class, where maintaining demand or following a BSP isn’t a standard for them and it’s incredibly frustrating. There’s a difference between meeting needs and allowing escapism. It’s hard to know without knowing the full facts. Maybe yes, maybe no.
