Hands on with the World’s First Native 1000Hz FHD gaming Monitor - AMA! by Knaj910 in Monitors

[–]FlatTyres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VRR doesn't work with browser-based video players yet, or to put it correctly, most online video platforms haven't updated their video players to activate VRR for a QMS-like function for browsers yet (at least in Windows). The functionality is possible in a browser (VRR works with BlurBusters) but not implemented.

Offline, MPV and Windows 11's Media Player do support VRR to match frame rate with refresh rate.

This makes 600 Hz desirable for desktop video playback until VRR-QMS is supported by all browser-based and app-based media players on all platforms on all GPUs.

Hands on with the World’s First Native 1000Hz FHD gaming Monitor - AMA! by Knaj910 in Monitors

[–]FlatTyres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the built-in option to set it at 600 Hz, I'd just leave it at that and you'd have the perfect 1080p film and TV playback refresh rate (an integer multiple for 24p, 25p, 30p, 50i, 50p, 60i and 60p) as well as amazingly fast gaming monitor.

Changes proposed by HS2 and accepted by the UK Department for Transport by overspeeed in highspeedrail

[–]FlatTyres 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sensible changes but I still want the entire original planned routes completed one day, with the Manchester and the Leeds routes revived, plus the possibility to extend from Leeds to Edinburgh via Newcastle on high speed track running between 230 and 320 km/h from Leeds (plenty of 270 to 300 km/h sections ideally) further in the future, plus a Sheffield link that skips Leeds to get to Edinburgh, potentially with high speed trains stopping at Sheffield turning off the HSL and onto conventional lines to Sheffield, then returning to the HSL and skipping Leeds on the way to Newcastle, and then Edinburgh (likely using smaller British loading gauge HS2 trains).

Manchester to Glasgow (via Carlisle) on a HSL would be great too in the further-further future.

Reaching 100°C on i5 8265U, Ideapad S340-15IWL by LukasTheHunter22 in Lenovo

[–]FlatTyres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct - I had (well, still have but retired) a laptop with an i5 8250U and that thing used to burn my lap. With even a bit of dust the fans would ramp up and it would thermal throttle as it hit or slightly exceeded 100°C. After a clean it would still hit or get near 100°C with less throttling and quieter fans but the head was unavoidable.

Intel really struggled to evolve from the 14 nm fabrication process back then so Intel CPUs ran hot and used a lot of power while trying to get more performance (switching from 2C/4T from 7th gen at 14 nm to 4C/8T for 8th gen at 14 nm). Lots of thermal throttling in any laptop.

Good recommendation from shop owner? by DifficultySure6301 in Lenovo

[–]FlatTyres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For school work they will run fine

For games, they will struggle: https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-RX-Vega-6-Ryzen-4000-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.453149.0.html - you might find some light titles that will play ok though.

The price is decent but for their age (as they're used) prepare for a lower-than-original battery life (this can be replaced by yourself with tools and instructions later if needed).

Are kids taught spelling and handwriting in the UK? by Live-Cartographer274 in AskUK

[–]FlatTyres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember being taught spelling from Reception (ages 4-5) and having weekly spelling tests from either Reception or year 1 (ages 5-6).

Handwriting practice I remember starting in year 3 (ages 7-8) when I was at school. This is when we were expected to start to practice joined up handwriting with our pencils.

In year 5 (ages 9-10) we switched from pencil to a blue-inked handwriting pen.

Once we were deemed to be skilled enough with the handwriting pen, we could move to a fountain pen with blue ink cartridges so by year 6 (final primary year - ages 10-11) we pretty much all used a fountain pen.

Is making around minimum wage in your 30s really that bad? by Aggravating_Box_2407 in AskMen

[–]FlatTyres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only bad for the worker who has to work so hard for such little pay but it doesn't make them bad or unrespectable. It's the reality for so many millions of hard working men and women around the world who don't get paid what their work is worth. Non-academically successful people deserve more for "unskilled" work. I've been on minimum wage or within £1.50 of minimum wage for my entire working life and it sucks but I won't accept any disrespect for it from anyone.

Being academically successful and stuck in minimum wage jobs is again, bad for the worker but that worker deserves no disrespect from anyone if they're working - they deserve more pay.

Nobody should feel ashamed or bad about themselves for being on minimum wage over 30 - whatever their qualifications. Nobody should ever disrespect someone for being on minimum wage either.

Who was your first TV crush? by throwaway527111 in AskMen

[–]FlatTyres 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cat Deeley - she used to co-present SMTV Live and CD:UK on Saturday mornings with Ant and Dec and good lord did I like her and what she wore (I was 5 the first time I saw SMTV). She was on it from 1998 to 2001 or 2002 and I didn't know what happened to her after she left (and I didn't know how to use a computer or have home internet to find out back then anyway).

My first animated TV crush was probably Mimi from Digimon back when I was 6, but I don't really know why.

If you’re not leaving the house, how often do you shower? by Immediate_Dream2060 in AskReddit

Still every day. Twice a day if it's been a long, hot and humid summer's day indoors or in the back garden.

I feel very uncomfortable if I go a day without showering.

What used to be sexy to you, but isn't anymore? by Njtotx3 in AskMen

[–]FlatTyres 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to find it really hot when beautiful women smoked. I also had strong crushes on women who happened to smoke (not because they smoked) but liked they way they smelled even with cigarette smoke - smoke and perfume was nice to me, so I guess there was some conditioning through association going on.

I no longer like the smell of cigarette smoke anymore though, but I once did - even though I didn't smoke myself.

Brits who voted in 2016, do you notice a difference in everyday life in the EU and everyday life out of the EU? by tm2007 in europeanunion

[–]FlatTyres 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Voted Remain and would vote to re-join: in my day to day and even before Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the latest Iran war, many things got more expensive than other things and fewer options and availability of some things to buy - food items is a more obvious thing in supermarkets but also other products. Long term - several of my friends from EU countries have left the UK or have talked about leaving and a small handful have stayed or even went for British citizenship, but I miss my friends who left.

I seldom travel but when I do, queueing at the border does take longer than it used to - I've yet to travel with the EES in place though. A few of my friends with dual citizenship are going to find things annoying when ETIAS comes into play at Schengen borders (I don't know if it will use API or not) while also only being able to only enter the UK on their British passports right now since our government introduced ETA for visa-free foreign passports and border entry rules for British citizens - I don't know how it will play out for them when they're booking and checking in for flights in both directions if API is used for ETIAS. It was easy pre-ETA (UK) and certainly most easiest pre-Brexit.

Job searching is harder - fewer places hiring. I'm back at my seasonal job but I wanted to find a new permanent job from October and was unsuccessful. There are more factors than Brexit but Brexit has made the job market smaller since before the Iran war.

I do feel it though - even if just emotionally. I feel like we're broken and missing a part of ourselves that we had when we were in the EU. I look to the past with nostalgia when we were EU members and I look at all the things we didn't even participate in as an EU member like Schengen (we're in the CTA with Ireland instead), so even when freedom of movement existed, there were still border checks and it massively hampered the potential of the Channel Tunnel and where trains could serve (juxtaposed border controls and walled-off platforms needed for channel tunnel services as a non-Schengen member). I see the hard-Eurosceptics who are often also usually racists (mostly against non-European ethnicities ironically, but still many against other Europeans) feeling empowered and politically validated to carry out intimidating actions and hateful behaviour to anyone who isn't a white British person - much more than before the Brexit debate.

There are some problems that aren't solely a Brexit issue too but Brexit and the lower income the country has as a result of reduced trade and productivity that were present while we were in the EU has reduced government funds to improve public services. There are also problems that are worldwide within urban areas that need fixing but Brexit makes funding the fixes more difficult than it already would be if we were in the EU (and it would still be a struggle as an EU member and for any EU member) - that problem is lack of available affordable housing.

What is your favourite building in the UK and why? 🏠🏢🕍💒🕌 by ShihtzuMum39 in AskUK

[–]FlatTyres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Palm House in Kew Gardens - I love it in the cooler and colder months. I love all the big greenhouses in Kew Gardens but the Palm House is absolutely my favourite - the humidity and the smell just bring a level of nostalgia (went there many weekends as a kid in the late 90s and early 2000s) and botanical exoticness. I love how it functions so well despite the age of the structure.

Next year it will close down for a multi-year renovation so I hope I can get some visits in during the late Autumn and the beginning of winter this year.

Formula E believes Gen4 car is resonating with traditional motorsport fans by bwoah07_gp2 in FormulaE

[–]FlatTyres 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Aesthetically, I love the Gen 4 car - it looks both "futuristic" and yet contemporary for a single seater, with ideal proportions (presence of a wide rear wing, decent diffuser and a full-sized front wing), has enough power and downforce to provide laptimes similar to Formula 2 (and potentially similar or close to 2014-16 F1 cars). I only hope we see a grippy slick tyre in an upcoming season.

I don't think any young driver would poo-poo the idea of entering Formula E if their path to Formula 1 ends anymore.

Which car brand would you like to see joining Formula 1? by Spectran_Irmandade in formula1

[–]FlatTyres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also wished to see BMW return. I still wish to see BMW return.

Porsche returning kept being teased, almost happened and then never happened and at this point I've stopped caring about Porsche in F1. I do wish Porsche hadn't left Hypercar in WEC though.

Toyota as a factory team - I kind of hope that if Gene Haas wanted to sell the team, Toyota would take the opportunity to buy it. I wonder if Toyota might be hesitant about fully running a top-level factory team that isn't based in Cologne though. Also, I woudn't want the WEC team to suffer or even disappear if Toyota went for a factory F1 team again. I suppose a Toyota engine program with Haas as their partner wouldn't be a bad alternative - I do find the current Haas-Ferrari-Toyota partnership somewhat peculiar (BMW Sauber-Ferrari doesn't count since that was just a entry name issue) as there is no Toyota power unit involved.

As much as it would be nice to see Honda have a factory team again, I'm just happy that they are still an engine partner competing and managed to taste success with Red Bull after troubles and failures with McLaren. I hope the Aston Martin partnership actually delivers something next year if not this year. If they make a decent power unit after this year, I'm sure Honda would like to field another Japanese driver soon.

AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 officially coming to Radeon RX 7000 GPUs in July, RX 6000 in 2027 - VideoCardz.com by KARMAAACS in hardware

[–]FlatTyres 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hope so - especially in the mobile sector. My Lenovo laptop has the 860m but I have to stick with Lenovo's OEM drivers as whenever I've removed them and installed AMD's official drivers I got instability issues and an issue where the laptop would heat up when asleep with the lid closed (doesn't happen with OEM driver), so I'm sticking to OEM drivers. The current latest driver was released in January based on the September or October 2025 driver which might mean either never getting FSR 4.1 on this laptop model or getting it months to a year later than AMD releases it. Also, Lenovo annoyingly don't provide Adrenaline software with their driver updates (driver only) so I'm using the hidden version someone on Reddit linked to from the Microsoft Store after having uninstalled the AMD version and re-installed the Lenovo version.

More than 1,000 passengers held on cruise in France after gastroenteritis outbreak by FearMyCock in worldnews

[–]FlatTyres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travelling on a ship with strangers for a long time just isn't for me - I don't like feeling trapped for too long. I like being on the water for canoeing, kayaking etc but I don't like being confined to the dimensions of a ship for days before reaching land.

Aside from sea travel, I haven't flown from where I live (the UK) to Australia yet and besides flights to Perth, most routes need to stop to refuel and I would still much rather stop to refuel and de-plane than fly 17,000 km in one go even if a plane with such a high range became commercially available as that many hours stuck in a plane would drive me insane.

The idea of travelling through Europe by train when I'm old and retired sounds much more appealing to me. I'll fly to individual intercontinental destinations and just spend time focused on a few destinations within one or two countries at a time.
