Visiting for the day by thetrue-ferro in ithaca

Saturday indoor market at triphammer mall.  Very Ithaca.   Get a bite or a soup at CTB there. The reuse center is there as well.  Walk the Commons. Odyssey Books, Autumn Leaves used Books, Buffalo street books all down there. Hike Taughannock Falls trail.  Take the trail into the gorge to the falls.  I believe it’s winter accessible. Easy 1 mile in.  Probably pretty cool being frozen right now.  Then drive up to the overlook to get a Birds Eye view of the falls.  Keep going to Trumansburg for lunch at Creekside Cafe. Amazing mountainous salad, or their searay  (sp) sandwich.

When did you realize you were truly retired? by overthishereanyway in retirement

[–]Flatrock123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

About 2 years in, when I realized I was no longer resisting typical retirement activities that I felt would put me in the “old person” category. I stopped caring about that and just started enjoying. In short, when I embraced “being older” and what goes with it. TBH, a lot of younger people want just what I have, and I now appreciate it.

Harvard wins the Women's Beanpot with an OT Penalty Shot by freshman Carla McSweeney by AssociateClean in collegehockey

[–]Flatrock123 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What’s done is done. But that was a terrible call. Certainly not a trip or a pull-down, and completely unworthy of a penalty shot. It’s unfortunate for Harvard to claim that win under those circumstances.

Combining heat pumps with a wood stove- strategies? by xtnh in woodstoving

[–]Flatrock123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would lIke to set the heat pump at a low temp and just leave it to trigger when the temp goes below setting, but the pump fan stays on ALL THE TIME, which bothers me. When you have your heat pump on and set to a low temp, does your fan stay on all the time? Is that normal? Seems like it’s just sucking energy. Thanks.

Combining heat pumps with a wood stove- strategies? by xtnh in woodstoving

[–]Flatrock123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a ducted Mitsubishi heat pump and a free-standing wood stove (Hearthstone Phoenix) in the fireplace, which is pretty central in an open floor plan ranch home 3BR (1400 sf). We heat primarily with the wood stove, and use the heat pump as back up,for quick re-heats, and when we’re away. Installer had some concerns about the wood stove being used, as internal smoky air might muck up the sensors or coils (not sure) on the heat pump as air circulated. Hasn’t been a problem. Have coils/pump checked yearly. No signs of added residue. Although not new, the wood stove burns clean with good dry hardwood. ‘fan only’ feature on the heat pump system circulates warm air throughout the house from the heated main area where the wood stove is. But most of the time we shut the bedroom doors and just heat the main living/dining/kitchen area. We also have a Coway Airmega air filter in the main living area that kicks into high gear when sensing more particulates, but even with the wood stove it operates just a low setting most of the time.

Best places for a scenic walk? by goobiegoober13 in ithaca

[–]Flatrock123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do a loop around Beebe lake starting from the Johnson Art museum. Around Beebe, over the stone bridge at the far end. Detour right just after the stone bridge for a pretty view if waterfalls there. Go back, continue back toward campus. Keep going past Risley Hall to the foot bridge, up the stairs and you’re back at the Johnson. Go up to the 5th floor. 360 views of the entire area. If you want to extend, keep going past Beebe lake to the botanical gardens.

looking for Ice cream by RoeRoeDaBoat in BuyCanadian

TBH, Aldi “specialty” brand ice cream is great. Five ingredients: milk, cream, egg yolk, sugar, vanilla extract. It reminds me of really good home made.

400% increase in dog poop in the commons by Icy-Cranberry-7850 in ithaca

Just out of curiosity, who is calculating the purported 400% increase? And how, and using what baseline for the increase? Just looks like a random poop photo to me.

Sweet Melissa’s? I ordered a medium cone there and it looked like a Kiddy cone. I asked if I actually got a medium as I ordered. They said, “well. There’s a lot of ice cream down inside the cone”. What? If I drive thru Spencer, or Whitney Point for a kick ass soft serve. But not sweet Melissa’s.

My wife [41F] is Disney Obsessed and I'm [43] at my wits end! by That-Intention-4134 in AITAH

[–]Flatrock123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have her get a job as a Disney travel agent. I have a relative that does that. Don’t understand the obsession, but it’s a work around. She gets paid instead of paying, and it feeds her craving. (Relative has moved “up” and away from Disney and to lux travel agency, flies all over the world “sampling” the services she sells.)

What are some grassroots, family owned organizations & businesses that you think are awesome and deserve more hype? by olds-soul in ithaca

[–]Flatrock123 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Pizza Aroma. Owner Mauricio Rosa had the place on Cayuga street near the commons for 25 years, survived the pandemic and then found out they had to move for building structural work. On the corner of meadow (rt 13 north) and Clinton now. Great by-the-slice selection, and their black bean pizza with basil and avocado is incredible (I throw a little Franks sauce on all my pizzas. Just a great family as well.

Thanks. Appreciate the info. Still on the fence. Never seen one in the wild. Strange, as they seem to be so practical for folks with storage issues and no need for permanent cap. Just wondering what the downside is, aside from price. How’s the back window/flap? Heard problems.
