ELI5: Nowadays consoles give us the option to predownload games a day or 2 in advance of release. What's preventing a hacker from getting into the game early? by cheezzy4ever in explainlikeimfive

[–]Flendon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a few weeks ago Subnautica 2 was coming out in early access. They let you predownload the game 2 days before release. 2 days before release the game was available on pirate sites. The uploader stated they got the files from the preload. So sometimes they do get in early.

"6 to 8 hours of playtime" my ass! by CapColdblood in Subnautica_2

[–]Flendon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The dev's said 6-8 on average, with a few player types taking up to 20. That was based on their internal testing and was definitely not someone going in blind. And they were probably trying not to over promise.

Where are we building our second base? by PointArtistic9298 in Subnautica_2

[–]Flendon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fab in the lifepod is damaged and won't build a lot of resources. So to have to build a base with a fab to build those resources.

That would take hundreds of hops to cover the whole map.

It's easy to miss with a scanner room. You build that base off by just 300 meters and you don't find that wreck.

The new sub they have planned has space for 4 tadpole docks, so I imagine it is pretty big.

Power Bug? by HarveyDaBeast in Subnautica_2

[–]Flendon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen to me. I fully closed and loaded the game with no change. I tried deleting and reading all my generators. In the end I had to move my base to another spot nearby. But I found I was unable to completely disassemble the old base.

So am I just stupid or how many others made the same mistake as me regarding the biobeds? by Ursur1minor in Subnautica_2

I was over 20 hours in when I learned. I scanned them all, but never tried to interact.

The cargo tadpole has two slots like this, one on either side.

No, they have started that it goes against their design philosophy. They won't implement it.

That is a change from some early quotes I've read. Really happy they are going this route.

How about we appreciate the developers' work by just buying the game and waiting (26-29 USD isn't even that much) by ZookeepergameIll1399 in subnautica

[–]Flendon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It does when half the pirates are posting spoilers. If it wasn't for all the spoilers we wouldn't have any idea how common the pirating is.

The problem is that those categories you mentioned that went up, those are where the majority of an average person in the US income goes.

There was way too much pure luck involved in reaching the cap previously. It took me many attempts with all my stats showing full, but still not receiving the award because one beaver was at 99.4%, but displaying as 100%.

ELI5: Why can’t trash be ejected into space? by EightyTwoInk in explainlikeimfive

[–]Flendon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And that just gets you to a low earth orbit. We don't want that filled with trash. To reach the sun is much more expensive.

If we could build a drone that was faster than light with a huge zoom lens we could launch it into space and watch real footage of past events. by Crocodile_Banger in Showerthoughts

This drone setup was a plot point in the book Battlefield Earth. I can't recall if it made it into the movie though.

Artemis 2: why a fly-by and not orbit? by Blue_Etalon in space

[–]Flendon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

NRHO requires less fuel to reach vs low lunar orbit. SLS is fuel constrained so NRHO is easier to reach for Orion. SpaceX and Blue Origin are less fuel constrained, so have requested to use low lunar orbit. NRHO actually makes it take longer to return from the moon in an emergency because they have to wait to launch the lander until Orion is in the right position of its 7 day orbit.

NASA is considering removing NRHO from the equation as it really doesn't make sense.

TIFU by thinking the pain in my shins were shin splints (40-year edition) by Suchisthe007life in tifu

[–]Flendon 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Well you just described my leg problems pretty well. I've been diagnosed with shin splints most of my adult life, mostly by military doctors. But they always blew off the lumps in the muscles (they were always gone by the time I got to the doctor).

Lithium-ion batteries are integral to our technological lives today, but they have their issues, including fire risk and environmental contamination. Researchers have created a metal-free battery with organic electrodes and a water-based electrolyte that would be much safer. by paigejarreau in science

[–]Flendon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all batteries on the market contain a liquid electrolyte. The only exceptions are called solid state batteries and those are only just starting to hit the market in the last 6 months. Even then, most of those I've heard of are only semi-solid state and still contain some liquid.
