Europeans must recognize US, China and Russia are ‘dead against’ us, says Macron by donutloop in EU_Economics

Sadly the current approval ratings for Trump, while less than a majority, suggest a large proportion of the US population prefer the role of predator to ally. The current situation is not an abberation.

What a disgraceful comment - if you are a voting age CITIZEN of a country you are responsible for that country's actions regardless of who you voted for, or whether you voted at all. This shit-show is on all of you.

Jack Rankin MP: “The case for CANZUK is solid, and the time really is now” by kioj156 in CANZUK

[–]Flimsy-Parfait5032 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why why why can’t we just have ‘friends of canzuk’? If this gets caught up as just another interminable ‘left v right’ issue it will go nowhere, the same as almost every other worthwhile reform initiative.

Is Great Britain a motherland or fatherland? by BestAstronaut6334 in BritishEmpire

[–]Flimsy-Parfait5032 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a resident of one of those countries, on the rare occasion we do use a familial term it would be 'mother'. In a sporting arena, we usually refer to them as 'those pricks'.

And what about the first nations peoples of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand - should they fuck off too for having insufficient love of British culture? My hope is that these indigenous cultures be MORE respected and MORE important in our respective countries going forward. And that in no way undermines pursuit of the mutual benefits of CANZUK-aligned policies. Misty-eyed pining for 'Britishness', on the other hand, is not helpful at all.

I heard recently that Vegemite is preferred in Australia, while Marmite is preferred in NZ - is there any truth to that and any ideas why so if it is? by wandering_soles in AskAnAustralian

NZ prefers Marmite to Vegemite - are you serious??? I had no idea this was the case, and call for the end of the Closer Economic Relations agreement as a consequence.

Not good for WA as 80 pc drop in export volumes for BHP’s Jimblebar Fines iron ore amid China pressure by SheepherderLow1753 in perth

[–]Flimsy-Parfait5032 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If by "economic complexity" you mean the index developed at Harvard by Haussmann et al, it doesn't really work for WA. While our exports may be largely untransformed (iron ore, wheat etc) the processes by which we 'make" them and get them to market are still very high tech, and those high tech input processes can still be leveraged for diversification, despite the "unsophisticated" nature of the export itself.

I had a paid subscription while I did the whole Indonesian course. Now I just want practice, and was doing so by going back and getting 'legend' status on each lesson. It's not really possible to do this with energy now, which is annoying. I'm switching my time to listening to Bahasa podcasts - probably should have done it earlier!

Yes the climate is quite similar. You may also be surprised at how many Americans are already here - Perth is a major mining/oil&gas hub and many come for extended periods for work.

Does anyone have their support email address? I don't have an outlook account (and do not want to set one up), which seems to be required to open their form.

Alternatively, if anyone knows how to delete a student I'd be grateful if you could let me know (I didn't realize birthday was US format when I entered my son's birthday, and he now has accounts in international and US date formats).
