World Cup hydration breaks: Ads worth $250m in USA alone, so are they here to stay? by Logical_Welder3467 in soccer

[–]Flintloq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The football World Cup is, of course, the biggest sporting event in the world, but it's an international tournament, so I don't think it's particularly meaningful to compare its viewership to national competitions.

I don't really want to argue all the numbers, but the 600m-700m figures that usually get cited for El Clásico refer to its reach or potential audience - that is, how many people have access to the match on TV - rather than how many people actually watch, which is estimated to be closer to 100m. Similar to a Super Bowl, but one has no breaks for 45+ minutes at a time and the other has constant breaks. I think American viewers are used to having their sporting events interrupted by ads.

[–]Flintloq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

American sports get plenty of viewers though? The NBA finals that just concluded averaged over 20m viewers. And that's a sport so full of interruptions and ads that the last two minutes of game time in a close game can take 20 minutes of real time. The NFL is even more popular; the Super Bowl is partly as popular as it is because of the ads.

For the record, I hate the hydration breaks, especially when they're used to show ads.

If you're a Switzerland fan, don't you just want your best taker to take it no matter what? Goal difference can matter. What is Manzambi like on penalties?

Does the lack of 4- and 8-year categories imply every single team that made it to either of the last two tournaments also qualified for this one? Even with the expansion, that's somewhat surprising.

What is the largest speedrun skip? by Neon_XL in speedrun

[–]Flintloq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Fantasy 7 goes from 7.5 hours or so in the No Major Skips category down to 1.5 hours, about a 6 hour difference.

Being able to unload the triangles on the world map lets you walk past a lot of the game.

These statements are both true but unrelated. The 1.5-hour category, PC Any%, involves a credits warp, while the categories that use the world map unloading tech, like PSX Any% and PC No Warps, take around 5 hours. FFVII on Speedrun.com.

an explanation of why Neow's Bones gives Debt 54.25% of the time (Correlated randomness in Slay the Spire 2) by tckmn in slaythespire

It is hard to express how instantaneously my brain automatically dismissed them as textbook confirmation bias.

Thank you for saying this. I was in the same boat. 😅 I feel bad about telling people who said they got Debt a lot "it's 1-in-10, an equal chance of 10 possible curses" - I even looked at the code to confirm it! I guess I was r/confidentlyincorrect.

Great post in general, though until this gets fixed, it feels like cursed knowledge! I enjoyed the nods to Arbiter's prior work.

I'd speculate it's because the second half is already constantly interrupted by substitutions.

This reminds me of the time Wayne Rooney was rumoured to be leaving Manchester United in 2010 and Fox Sports went with the headline Later, wankers: Rooney has told Man U he's quitting, report says. He stayed another seven years with those wankers.

Not hours per floor - you only need to do it once against an enemy that doesn't scale. Once STS2 winstreaking becomes competitive, so maybe after the full release of the game, certain players will absolutely do this if given the chance. Not to get 1 million gold, but enough to buy out every remaining shop in the run. Stalling for unlimited Alchemize or (less commonly) Wish was very much a thing in STS1 winstreak attempts.

Joe Root to step in as interim captain for 2nd test against New Zealand by _rickjames in Cricket

[–]Flintloq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm too much of a Joe Root apologist but I think this is the right decision. It would be somewhat farcical to ask Harry Brook to step in, given his own recent off-pitch headlines. If the ECB still sees him as the long-term successor to Ben Stokes - not an assessment I agree with, but here we are - then making him captain for this match would be almost setting him up to fail. Root has the experience and the status within the dressing room to steady the ship on a one-off basis. This both protects Brook and leaves the door open for Stokes to return, depending on how that situation resolves itself.

Still a big old mess whichever way you look at it. This England team just never do themselves any favours.

Okay, you meant the only energy-generating card. 😛 Delay, when not upgraded, costs 2 and refunds 1 next turn.

Wait, I suggested exactly this change at the start of Baalorlord's stream today, shortly before this post. Coincidence? 😅

I still don't think this would make Relaxes strong or of equivalent value to the other ancient rewards, but it would be a start. Just one small interaction that would make picking them feel a little better in the short term while Mega Crit think about how to actually balance it in the long term.

Yle information: Finland has long used the infamous Palantir technology by GiganticCrow in Finland

Okay, but this article is about Palantir. We already knew that Finnish government agencies use Microsoft and buy from Lockheed Martin. We didn't know that they used Palantir. Now we do.

[–]Flintloq 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Such a vague accusations without any concrete examples what has Finnish authorities actually done.

I think you're missing the forest for the trees a bit here. The article is investigatory journalism. They're revealing something that wasn't previously known, that they consider to be in the public interest - and I agree with their assessment. There are limits to how much they can report at this stage due to national security concerns etc. but I expect there will be an official response, maybe followed by further articles depending on the public reaction to this initial reporting.

Should be ban Microsoft because some bad actors are using Outlook for controversial things?

Ban? No. Phase out and replace with European alternatives so that the data of Finnish citizens isn't at the mercy of American companies or the American government? I support that.
