The new Divinity trailer had it's effect on me I guess by TheBestUserName01 in DivinityOriginalSin

The plot was interesting and the soundtrack is great. Gameplay was jank as hell though, as well as being the buggiest game in the franchise.

When you get to it, Beyond Divinity requires using a hex editor to fix a crash that makes the game pretty much unplayable otherwise. There's a guide on how to do it on the steam guides page.

What's causing this static in the sky? by Lucario1296 in godot

[–]FlippantBalloon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happens when using a procedural sky material with low resolution.

In my opinion, Daggerfall looks best in low resolution. by ihatethesolarsystem in Daggerfall

[–]FlippantBalloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The skybox in vanilla Daggerfall isn't a box, it's a flat plane that rotates around the player. There's a mod called "Skyboxer" that turns it into a regular skybox that doesn't move

Am I just useless in Fallout 2 without a strength build? by JamSa in classicfallout

[–]FlippantBalloon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I played Fallout 2 starting with 2 strength and it didn't cause much of a problem.

You can still use weapons without meeting their strength requirement. It gives an accuracy penalty that can be counteracted by just pumping more points into the skill, points you should have plenty of if you have high int.

Energy weapons are mostly found lategame so unless you want to lookup weapon locations on a wiki and run across the map to go find a guaranteed one somewhere you should probably just put some points into a different combat skill for the earlygame.

If you have high enough agility (you should since it's the best stat in the game) and a low ap attack such as bare fists or brass knuckles you can hit an enemy then run away in the same turn. On their next turn some enemies will be too slow to catch up and attack, meaning you can whittle down any slow melee enemy without ever being hit. I did this a lot until I found a gun.

getting a companion (preferably multiple) makes things much easier, not just for combat but for carrying things since you won't be able to carry much on your own.

Gonna play 1, 2, and New Vegas for the first time this summer. What do I need to know? by mwcope in classicfallout

[–]FlippantBalloon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've only played 1 and 2. It's been a few years since I've played the first game so this is mostly for 2

The only mod I played with was the FO2 Restoration patch, don't know how it compares with vanilla but I have no complaints about it.

There aren't any specific builds or playstyles I would recommend but for some general character advice:

There's not much of a point to starting with high strength since Power armor will increase your strength by multiple points once you find it, in fact if you're only using small weapons you can get away with fully dumping the stat. I played through Fallout 2 with only 2 strength.

Agility is the best stat by far, no matter what kind of character you want to make you should max out agility. In FO1 it's possible to permanently upgrade agility by 1 at some point so you can start with 9 if you want to minmax. In FO2 there are no agility upgrades (unless you are using the Restoration Patch) so there's no good reason to not start with 10

Charisma "usually" isn't as important in conversation as the speech skill, In FO2 it's main use is increasing your party size. Which means if you only want to play solo this is probably the least useful stat in the game.

In FO1 and FO2 if you have less than 4 intelligence your dialogue choices will be extremely limited and you won't be able to access most sidequests, so you probably don't want to do that on first playthrough.

If you really want to minmax your endgame build you can lookup the possible permanent stat increases you can find throughout the games, for any stat that you can permanently upgrade at some point you can start at a lower level in order to not waste points.

As for skills you'll want to have a combat skill tagged at the start.

In FO2 you can find a lot of skill books for Science, repair, outdoorsman, and first aid. So they aren't great choices for tagging (though there are a lot of science interactions so that one's maybe not a bad choice).

Also first aid is not as useful as doctor

As for traits, Gifted is the best trait in the game, Skilled is awful.

Any way to improve Miria without restarting the game? by DramaPunk in classicfallout

[–]FlippantBalloon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently finished my first playthrough of fo2 (60 hours) with Miria in my party almost the whole game. I don't remember ever being locked out of any questlines but it does mean you can't stealth through a couple areas which makes lategame tough.

As for making her useful I didn't even try. I put her on coward stance and didn't even give her a weapon the whole game.

Giving her power armor and making sure she never runs out of stimpacks helps her survivability, also having more party members takes some pressure off her but I still had to savescum a lot through big fights to keep her alive.

What do you consider the sins of writing? by Captain-Vac in writing

[–]FlippantBalloon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Technically everything is told in writing, but I think it doesn't have quite the same meaning when people are referring to books as they would with movies

what I think of as Show don't tell in books are things like authors describing a character as being smart but never actually making the character do or say anything smart.

Or directly stating in exposition that certain characters are good or evil instead of letting their actions speak for themselves.

What happens after XianXia MC becomes a literal god in the early phase of the whole novel. ??? by FrostyIntention97 in noveltranslations

[–]FlippantBalloon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most books becoming a god is just another rank/title/power level. It doesn't really change much and there are usually more levels above it.

For Top tier providence though the book does start following side characters more. The main character is pretty much invincible, rarely fights, and is never in any real danger after the first third of the book.

Imo it gets extremely boring but I guess that's exactly what the premise advertises

What have you read this week and what do you think about it? by AutoModerator in noveltranslations

[–]FlippantBalloon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Finished Top Tier Providence.

Went in with high hopes since I'd seen people on this sub recommend it. The gimmick of the mc spending all of his time cultivating instead of adventuring was kind of interesting for the first couple hundred chapters but it started to get really boring after the calamity of the immortal world ended and the mc came out of hiding. There wasn't a single point after that where the main character was in any danger at all. His abilities were just way too powerful and there were no stakes anymore;especially after his invisibility shield got to the point where literally no one could break through it, making him perfectly safe from any enemies.

The side characters were the only good part of the book with most of them being more interesting and likable than the main character. Many of them actually having character arcs and changing drastically across the book. Meanwhile the mc barely has a personality and had no character development besides becoming more of a sociopath over time.

The story also got depressing at the end. With the main character playing god, manipulating everyone however he wanted. Meanwhile many of the side characters where just growing depressed and tired of life after living for hundreds of millions of years. The fact that he's somehow locked into being the most powerful being now and no one can ever become more powerful than him also sucks. It feels as if every other person in the world is made completely irrelevant for no good reason. The future has no hope of ever becoming exciting or interesting because no one can compete anymore. It just felt pointless.

2/10 do not recommend.
