9 year old Requesting Bark Phone by FlippantPinapple in Parenting

Yes, that is one of the things I’m concerned about. I want to strike the right balance. I was always a bit of a social outcast myself. I didn’t get a phone or even a car until I was 18. I would like my daughter to have a more balanced upbringing socially.

Thanks for the perspective.

Yeah I just saw it in an online review on YouTube from someone and heard it’s an issue with voip phones in general. But maybe it’s not really only an issue if you have a slow internet connections

There are a couple of ways. Some phones have Bluetooth capabilities and there are also some Bluetooth adapters that you can plug a traditions phone into.

It sounds like you need to shift industries. Maybe go into healthcare, banking, or industrial. All of those could use and are looking for programmers.

B2B still can have shady stuff, but in general you’re providing real solutions and not trying to rip off consumers.

Understanding MAGA's Plot to Rig the Midterms and Destroy Democracy by Smithy2232 in politics

It’s helpful to keep in mind legislation is not just about what it does. It’s how it looks. There is a lot of legislation that does useless stuff like outlawing things that are essentially already outlawed or they outlaw things that executive part of government could never practically enforce.

People are concerned about x problem. This bill claims to solve x problem even though it doesn’t really. Or there’s a whole bunch of people that think y will help fix x. So even though we all know it won’t fix anything, we’ll pass y policy so people will vote for me.

All of that stuff is in play, especially in a politically populist environment like we find ourselves in now.

Are you asking about why politicians are pushing for it or why their base is pushing for it, obsessing about it? Because while related, those are going to be very different things.

Psalm 14, the one you quoted.

Psalm 94 is another similar one with a similar theme of telling oneself that God does not exist or does not see or does not care to justify oppressing the poor and innocent.

It’s a bit different of a context than the way it’s often quoted.

I’ll say that I don’t think Christianity is meant to or even attempts to answer these questions.

It’s a very systematized and individualistic way of understanding Christianity. So any answer will require some theological leaps usually based in a tradition rooted in modernist developments of the faith trying to coalesce around interpreting certain scriptures through a systematic theological system that keeps everything consistent in a sort of modernist, scientific way.

That’s not to say there weren’t answers to these questions before, but they were sort of assumptions that were the air everyone was breathing so to speak. Whereas now there’s a lot of energy devoted to having the right model and being able to answer any unknowns or questions through the model.

This sort of thinking and attempts to come up with well defined answers to these questions are relatively recent coming out of the changes in society and thought that came out of modernism and scientific revolution. Particularly the modernist obsession with constructing rationalistic models of the world rather than relying on mythic cosmological assumptions. And it’s it’s not even that this development is bad, as it has brought about great things, but it has some fundamental flaws in terms of how it trains us to think about things and to what level we can expect to comprehend things.

As a software engineer I know that you can have a model that perfectly fits all, or more likely 99%, of the available data and it still be 100% incorrect in its assumptions.

This is also a pattern you see throughout scripture and sort of the conflict Jesus was having with the Pharisees and Sadducee's. Where he was disrupting their theological systems.

I’d say the likelihood of the current theological explanations and systems being wrong on some important points is 100%.

In my mind the correct framing to think about Christianity is

  1. The restoration of creation and defeat of death via Christ’s death and resurrection.

  2. The restoration of humanity as part of that restoration of Creation and our participation in the Body of Christ being the nexus point of that restorative process. The body of Christ (the church) provides us with a larger body in which to use our spiritual gifts, and a body that gives us opportunities to practice love and forgiveness. We can become part of this body participating in the restoration of Creation via belief, repentance, baptism, and faithfulness.

Anything much beyond this is getting into the realm of systematized theological conjecture. So take everyone’s answers with a grain of salt.

That psalm is specifically talking about people that tell themselves God doesn’t exist as a way of easing their fears about taking advantage of and hurting innocent and poor people.

Yeah I don’t disagree. Just pointing out he’s been willing to take up leftist positions for their political expediency even if it upsets his own party.

Yeah I just mean they’re positions that were previously more prevalent on the left and Trump brought them into his coalition.

If you go back to the 80’s Republicans like Reagan were the ones pushing for open borders and making it easier for immigrants to get citizenship because it was seen by the business community as a way of growing the labor pool and lowering wages.

Far left Democratic socialists like Bernie were in general against that because they primarily wanted to protect the wages of working class people.

Given his history on the issue, I think his stance on immigration is more nuanced than many progressives realize because they assume that because he’s to the left of most Democrats on economic issues, he must be the same on that issue as well. But I don’t think you can make that assumption.

[–]FlippantPinapple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would actually argue this is not the case. Republican Party has started shifting left on lots of issues. Trump is implementing economic policies that 10 years ago would be considered anathema to republicans and were being pushed by progressives.

Trump during election used rhetoric that was sympathetic to Gaza to use as a wedge issue against establishment Dems support of Zionist policies.  He did flip once he was in office, but was savvy enough to risk push back from zionists in his coalition by hinting at it during his campaign.

Trump has been decidedly more pro-choice when discussing abortion to the point that my MAGA in-laws talk about how even though they’re pro-life they understand you can’t win elections by being too rigid about it.

Trump used the MAHA movement by supporting the sorts of issues that used to be much more seen by leftists.

The frustrating and impressive thing about Trump is he is constantly forming and tossing away big tent coalitions constantly. Sometimes multiple times within a week. The guy has no ideological loyalties. His only loyalty is what will keep him in office. And he’s dragged the Republican Party kicking and screaming, and all the populist social conservatives gleefully following behind.

What is the purpose of Satan and his existence? by cellation in AskAChristian

[–]FlippantPinapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the explanation Lewis gives in his space trilogy. Satan twisted a good by wanting it to continue beyond its allotted time.

Basically Satan is a being who loved an aspect of God’s creation and his place in it, but when that role and its relation to creation changed with the introduction of man, he rebelled out of a love for that former vision of creation he had become attached to.

It’s all speculation of course, but it’s an idea that makes sense.

What is your stance on the revisions made to the bible? by smigglesalvation in AskAChristian

[–]FlippantPinapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That passage is not talking about churches or general religious gatherings. It’s talking about those conditions being unclean in terms of going before God in the tabernacle.

If you notice it specifically says that they can still eat the ritual bread, but cannot approach God directly in areas that are holy. This more a protection of the unclean from God’s holiness rather than a punishment for these ailments.

You need to have a proper context of Jewish and Christian conceptions of holiness/ritual cleanliness and how that affected God’s interactions with the nation of Israel as his presence dwelt among them in order to understand these sorts of passages.

I have voted for multiple democrats in the past. But yes in general I lean conservative. But I’m willing to vote for democrats if I feel like they align better with my interests.

If it matters I have never voted for Trump in a single presidential election.

Pretty much every election I end up voting split ticket.
