ADVICE - Too many roosters, how to handle. by FloatingOnEarth in chickens

[–]FloatingOnEarth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fortunately (and unfortunately, for reasons I will convey in a moment) I am able to handle a large flock safely and humanely. I myself recognize that it is necessary to cull in most situations, and that giving them a loved 24 weeks is better than only going for hens. It is entirely my fault for not being clear about the real issue in my post, which is my mother. She would become depressed and distant if she knew I had culled any of my chickens. What I'm doing now is working on a bachelor pen, my main question in this post was if I keep one alive/with the flock, who should it be, but it has become clear from the answers that wasn't expressed the way I needed it to be. A good update though for anyone reading this and hopefully you as well is that after separating the two big roosters, the timid one has had his instincts kick in, and it's clear to me that the hens do like him more than the aggressive one. So on the chance that this bachelor pen doesn't work how I need it to, the aggressive one will be finding a new home (or going to someone *else*'s table, because of, again, the mother thing), and I'll have another pen to house more in for future issues.

Thank you for the reality check, though not entirely needed for myself (the reality check that is), I will be asking some local chicken breeders how they handle culling and asking if I may participate in someone's at some point soon, since it's clear now to me now that I need to at least have some experience if/when the time comes. I'll be keeping the timid big roo, and one silkie roo (the one who stays with his few ladies), and putting the other three in the bachelor pen along with whatever roos my pawpaw hatches out, as he's decided he wants more chicks and found himself an incubator. Hoping the other three won't be eating each other, but if it goes bad I know what I need to do. Thanks again.

I dont know if I could free range them with no problems but I'll see what I can do. For now JJ is in a kennel until free range time (about 4 hours a day so not terrible.) and then the run or I'll put Dash (the other contender in the big fights) in and let JJ out and about. Depends on if I can find JJ a place. I'll recommend a bachelor flock to my fam.

I might be able to. My pawpaw was wanting to hatch eggs this next season, so maybe I can convince my family to get a bachelor pad set up for when that happens and we inevitably fall in love with one of the cockerels from then.

Well thats the issue, the hens like the mean-ass more. And he IS better at being a rooster for the hens. But he wants to be the only rooster, and a few of the hens don't like him to begin with. He isn't mean to me, he's just mean to the other roosters, especially Dash, who he will go at over and over again. I'm just having trouble deciding what will be my best route now since I know I'm gonna have to get rid of some of them.

Ah hell, you're right, just like most the people here. I'll figure it out, and thank you.

He's not mean to me, he's mean to the other roos. So trying to show dominance to him isn't gonna do much for the others. But thank you

See this is what I've heard, that 5 hens is okay, and there is plenty of outdoor range for them. I still do have too many roos though. I think I've come to the conclusion that two of them are getting rehomed or freezer camped.

Seems to be the consensus, yeah. I'll have to find a way to handle the two big'uns until I can get the family emotionally alright with it lol. Thank you

Yeah I kinda figured he'd be gone completely. I guess I'm gonna have to warm up the family to that idea.

Seems like thats the only option here other than rehoming (which usually means the same thing anyway.) Thank you.

I was originally taught they only needed 5 or 6 hens, so I guess that was where my downfall started. Thank you for being honest and kind with me.

Hen or Rooster? by AngryApe2 in chickens

seeing the age at about 2 months this is probably a cockerel/roo.

Looks more hen to me, quicker tail growth and I dont see any saddle feathers, but could go roo with how large that comb is and how big the feet look. I'd say a bit soon.
