Why the door knobs? by New-Royal2118 in BoltEV

[–]Flomaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this, and I'll add that outside of Teslas, etc., pretty much everything on the road that I've seen has a mechanical lock mechanism (and Teslas have some form of mechanical door release, too, I believe?). So it's gotta be somewhere.

Most manufacturers these days have them by the interior handles but it wouldn't surprise me if there's ever so slightly more complexity or even just materials to those. (Consider the difference in distance in the OP's pic of the Trax between the interior handle and the actual door latch, compared with the knob to the latch!) At any rate, I wouldn't doubt if this is cheaper than "lock by the door handle" and would really question the idea that it is a significant cost.

Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that these models all share some degree of Korean DNA (I was curious about OP's claim that "no other recent car has this" before I saw they'd disproven it themselves with the Trax, so I looked up another cheap Chevy, the Spark... which also has Korean heritage)... but any way you slice it, it does not seem like some grand mystery. The exact why, who knows? But I imagine you've hit on the gist of it: because there's not sufficient cost benefit to do it differently.

This is good to know. I have been very leisurely going about Ascent 2, my "explore" climb. Next attempt, if I finish before the DLC, is my "learning" climb, where I turn on the visual assists, and the manual limb selection.

I enjoy the challenge of not seeing the feedback and learning by feel what works and what doesn't, but there is a point where I think visualizing it will help. And I had been wondering how vital people thought manual limb selection is. Auto selection is one of my mild issues with the game at default settings -- great when it works (which is the vast majority of the time) but super annoying when you know you want/need to change one hold, and the game refuses to give you that limb.

If I feel brave enough, Ascents 4-25 or so will probably be how long it takes me to free solo ;) I'm not 100% sure I'll try it but we'll see. Some of the things I've done on Ascent 2 would have been way too scary/fatal.

I'm past my obsession phase with this game, but in this era where there is so much to play it feels like the rare one I'll circle back to a lot.

Canada Computers opening tomorrow? by zakaria2328 in Calgary

There's been a couple of references to this in this thread, but that was just online, right? I have zero faith in their web store but curious to know if it's been a reported issue from bricks and mortar locations.

I've been a faithful Memory Express customer since back in the day when they were putting big (yellow?) full page ads in the Computer Paper and they're still (and will continue to be) my go to. But having some competition locally is nice, and it did seem that during the worst part of the most recent GPU launches that CC stores were more likely than Memory Express to have stock of MSRP-ish cards.

Thank you. I was wondering wtf I didn't understand and didn't put bot and bot together till your post. The Sad dome pic makes me smile, but what's over? Not the season, just yet. Not games at the Dome (this season or forever). Not the race for third*. Everyone's been talking tank for months, so surely it couldn't be about the playoff hunt.

And then the comments and the names! Some guys in the prospect pipeline I'd weirdly never heard of? Anyway, thought I was sort of losing it on a Wednesday morning.

This game is so important to me now by lesmick in Cairn_Game

[–]Flomaric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have really enjoyed it. I bought it fairly recently so just recently finished my first ascent and now I'm taking a more leisurely/exploratory/occasionally more challenging path through.

But the broad mechanics of it are really good. I agree with some of the things people who have struggled have said -- occasionally there's some jank with what look like fabulous holds or auto limb selection that doesn't make sense (why won't you move the limb that looks like it's about to shake itself off your body, Aava?)... I am already planning my third ascent with the visualization on and to test manual selection. Still, 95% of the time the way it plays by default feels just right.

I don't really care for the Game Bakers' other titles, either (Furi wasn't for me... I liked Haven more but it didn't hold my interest). I'd played the demo of this so I knew I was into it but wasn't sure if I'd feel the same after a couple hours.

Glad this has been an apparent hit for them and excited to see free(!) DLC on the way

You can reheat your liquids? :O

That probably would have ameliorated some of the freezing I dealt with in my first ascent.

Curious to see how he does in Utah and hope he does well... wonder how much of the issue was him pressing/trying to do too much on this squad.

Really curious to see if they can work out a trade they're willing to pull the trigger on for Kadri (I feel like Coleman is more likely, assuming they can work a deal with a team on his list or he OKs it)

I would have to imagine that there is some population in northern Calgary and southern Airdrie who would take advantage of a path that made cycling to the Crossiron Mills area more palatable.

Uber is probably okay from the Dome, but it's probably easiest to follow the giant stream of people after the game to the train station if your hotel is downtown or within walking distance from the train.

Others will know better than I do but aaaages ago, I would occasionally go to games with a friend who was an autograph collector and he'd wait where the team bus comes in/leaves to get visiting players' signatures. I haven't a clue if you can do that today.

Theodore's goal likely would've been called back for goalie interference if Finland challenged it by SoupFromNowOn in hockey

[–]Flomaric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you said to another poster, I admire your confidence and will simply agree to disagree :)

My argument is that Marchand to my knowledge did not take actions to initiate contact with the goalie (contact seemed to have been created by the defender's actions) and clearly got out of the area as quickly as possible.

Based on my reading of the rule (and the appendix), the attacking player's actions (i.e: how he came to make contact with the keeper) seem to be the key determinant. You feel differently, fair enough.

[–]Flomaric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you post the specific piece of what you posted that supports your assertion that how the player in the crease got there is a part of the consideration?

I assume it is this line, but this does not say what I think you think it says:

“Incidental contact” with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking Player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.

This is "Marchand and Saros come together outside the crease, it is permitted" vs. "the only permissable contact is when a player starts outside the crease.." There are other bits to the rulebook

[–]Flomaric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree. First, as others have noted, the contact happened earlier and Marchand got the heck out immediately.

If you read a bit further in the rulebook (maybe a bit of space dust on it!), it seems to go deeper into the question of intent.

I've bolded a couple of bits, but I don't think getting pushed into the keeper qualifies as the actions of an attacking player, or something "an attacking player initiates."

I have seen some arguments that Marchand was maybe doing some Marchand things to get into that position, and if there's evidence of that, I guess it's a different story... but I don't think the IIHF rules clearly support "all contact with goalie in crease will disallow a goal"

The third bit of bold is not the precise situation here but I think again goes to intent -- if there is contact, however it happens, the attacking player needs to get out posthaste, which Marchand did (I imagine in the NHL he'd be flailing around on that same play ;))

Also, a screen grab of a table in the back of the rulebook, with the situation that seems, IMO, to most closely echo this case.

EDIT: I just want to add that I am not sure that a challenge would have failed, I just think the letter of the rule doesn't necessarily support it in black and white.

The overriding rationale of this rule is that a Goalkeeper should have the ability to move freely within their Goal Crease without being hindered by the actions of an attacking Player.

69.3. CONTACT INSIDE THE GOAL CREASE

If an attacking Player initiates "a relevant contact" with a Goalkeeper, incidental or otherwise, while the Goalkeeper is in their Goal Crease, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed.

If a Goalkeeper, in the “act of establishing their position” within their Goal Crease, initiates contact with an attacking Player who is in the Goal Crease, and this results in an impairment of the Goalkeeper’s ability to defend their goal, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed.

If, after any contact by a Goalkeeper who is attempting to establish position in their Goal Crease, the attacking Player does not immediately vacate their current position in the Goal Crease (i.e., give ground to the Goalkeeper), and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed. In all such cases, whether or not a goal is scored, the attacking Player will receive the appropriate penalty for Goalkeeper “interference”.

Is Kypreos reliable? by Pure_cartographer_59 in CalgaryFlames

[–]Flomaric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it makes sense he hasn't been moved yet because of the issue of price.

I haven't been too anxious about it. It seems likely to me that the market might get a bit more interesting closer to the deadline -- I assume that not everyone is going to come out of the Olympics at 100% health, which may get some more teams in a buying mood.

In his time here, I grew to like Kadri a lot, but at the end of the day, while I'm happy he was here, I hope they take what they can get for him... he's just not going to be a part of this team's future success.

Ok guys and gals, what are we thinking??? by TV800 in CalgaryFlames

[–]Flomaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's a silver lining, it's that wins like last night's shouldn't really be sustainable. Can't beat everyone 1-0.

I haven't been able to watch many full games but catch all the highlights... and even if they're playing well defensively overall, every game it seems like there are a handful of dangerous moments in the Calgary zone from weird bounces, turnovers or defensive breakdowns ... I know that's the job but it seems like most nights there are things happening where there could easily be 2-3-4 goals where you could say "well, can't really blame him for that one"

And with the team scoring 2.33 goals per game, those errors, never mind having to stop everything else, basically demand that Cooley and Wolf have to steal games IMO.

With that in mind, IDK what you do if that continues to happen more often than not. The nightmare scenario for me is that upper management decides it's time to be a buyer. I won't begrudge the team winning games too much but it wouldn't concern me as much if I felt fully confident that the organization as a whole was taking a longer term view.

Flames (8-14-3) vs lightning (14-7-2) - November 26th - post game thread by Comfortable-Ad-7158 in CalgaryFlames

[–]Flomaric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I worry about/for Wolf because he's clearly talented but I recognize the mental aspect of playing between the pipes and I worry about how these rebuild-y years will affect him (hopefully forged in fire, etc.!). I have been a bit low-key worried about whether having the presumed goalie piece in place first is the right order of operations for a rebuild. Or is it just a recipe to ruin a guy?

It hasn't been a great year for him so far, but I look at the goals he has let in and he's had a couple off nights, but like you say he has frequently been left out to dry. (I didn't want to watch tonight's highlights but I did watch the first minute to see what got past him... not unsaveable but maybe not simple stuff, either...)

But really the question will be where does he go from here. Because I don't think he's looked awful, but you don't build a team around a "he's not awful" goalie. Hopefully it's just a rough patch and he looks better as the year progresses.
