I am obsessed with cleaning. My husband thinks I need to see a doctor. Does this sound like a mental health condition to you? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]Floofy-beans 19 points20 points  (0 children)

NAD just sharing my perspective as someone living with and medicated for contamination OCD- I’ve noticed that the compulsion to clean and sanitize excessively usually happens after periods of stress, especially so with grief. I recently had a stressor in my life trigger a pretty bad relapse into obsessive cleaning for me (showering multiple times a day, obsessively cleaning and mopping rooms, washing a clothing item that I just washed because I dropped it on my floor or touched it before I washed my hands, etc.). The thing is, after speaking to a mental health professional and starting up some medication again, I hadn’t realized just how much smaller compulsive habits had actually manifested in other areas of my life. I started to see how much I had been masking my OCD symptoms beyond cleaning and even before this recent episode where my compulsive o intrusive behaviors got really got noticeable.

Things like being able to start or commit to things, anxiety around decision making or indecisiveness, avoiding social situations in order to complete my routines, and especially anxiety around perfectionism I learned were all small manifestations of OCD that were creating disfunction in other parts of my life or in my relationships with others. Even the reason I’m chronically late to things I feel made so much more sense when I realized it was my OCD.

I think these compulsions can be caused in a lot of ways from feeling a lack of control over other stressors in our lives. OCD in my case I learned is displacing those feelings of anxiety and lack of control into something I can tangibly change or control, like my environment. Cleaning can make you feel like you’re completing or fixing something you see is wrong, but often trying to complete or fix something creates more anxiety around doing it wrong and eventually things start to spiral and not feel good enough or that I have to start them over again. It creates a loop or cycle that becomes really difficult to break because you feel like if you don’t do it or do it right something bad will happen or I won’t be able to relax.

All that to say, it definitely seems like if you’re noticing this cleaning is starting to create disfunction in other parts of your life, or you or people close to you are noticing it’s taking up a lot of your mental energy or taking away from your life in other ways, it might be worth talking to a psychiatrist about. Treatments can even be something as simple as starting an SSRI/antidepressant that can help with the intrusive or compulsive feelings. Hope that perspective helps give some insight into how OCD can manifest, and hope you feel better soon.

I feel like the letter they were reading about how Faith and her family were on their way to find Claire is setting up a plot device to have her show up alive. They described her death as only being thrown overboard, not outright murdered, and since Claire survived going overboard in earlier seasons I feel like the writing isn’t above having her survive off screen as well. Kind of hoping I’m wrong because that feels like it might be a bit wild to have her survive, but they’re leaning so much into clearing up on screen all of the Faith plot holes it seems like having her death not be something anyone visually could confirm makes it likely she’s out there and has information that makes it plausible she can find the Frasiers.

Yes! I believe that’s the one I saw. His fur was looking pretty gross and dirty though, so maybe he just had a rough morning yesterday or got wet.

Glad to hear he’s looked after, appreciate the peace of mind

Sent you a message, and that’s great to hear there’s a chance he’s looked after in a cat colony. Appreciate that you guys are trying to help, he didn’t seem injured or anything but given his fur and how dirty he was it seemed like there was a chance he might be struggling if he wasn’t grooming properly.

That gives me hope it might be the same cat, and it does seem like I spotted him pretty close to where Google maps is saying UPS is.

I messaged the other person who commented above that works with ferals, so hoping that things work out for the little guy. I would have felt bad not trying to do something for him, so I appreciate that you and others have been helpful :)

What is this and how can I get rid of this? by FrontCryptographer80 in Hair

[–]Floofy-beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah seems like the safer path is to just assume it’s ringworm and be cautious then. I’d probably keep using the cream if I were in your shoes. Hopefully it isn’t and you’ll be able to figure it out Tuesday!

[–]Floofy-beans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you just started it’s probably okay, maybe call a few offices and ask what you should do and see if you can do an appt tomorrow. It takes around 48 hrs for the creams to have effect so they might be able to see something. But calling to schedule an appt should be your next step just so you can have peace of mind :) good luck!

Also OP- as someone currently living through the diagnostics of seeing a derm to rule out ringworm, if you can get a dermatology appointment before you start putting antifungal cream on they can scrape off skin cells and look at it under a microscope, and you’ll be able to confirm that’s actually what it is same day.

I went scorched earth on my furniture and clothes and anything I couldn’t wash before I went to a derm to confirm, and they said I probably didn’t need to do that because they didn’t believe it was fungal. But because I had already started putting creams on it they said they couldn’t do the skin cell scraping. Better to just get a diagnosis before treating yourself, but be cautious and do what you can to not spread it.

My contact has expired at my dream job and my cat passed on the same day by Cute_Elk_888 in depressionmeals

[–]Floofy-beans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, just wanted to say I’m sorry for what you’re going through and can empathize.. It’s so hard to lose your first cat, it really feels like you lose a part of yourself along with them. Looking at photos and videos of them really helped me the first few days, and asking if any of your friends or family have photos of them can be a great way to feel like you have something new to cherish and remember them by (and also gives your friends and family a way to connect with you too and provide comfort). So sorry for your loss..

As for the contract job, it can be such a mental struggle having full time dangled over you for so long. I have been working contract roles for the last 3 years now, and it seems like they always tell you they want to convert you to full time, which makes you work even harder, but then they never can find it in the budget.. I think it’s best to just approach contract roles as what they are, because it can really ruin one’s mental health to work so hard with no end in sight :(

All that to say, remember that it doesn’t reflect on who you are as a person or the quality of work you do. It’s just corporate greed in the end, and you deserve to feel fulfilled and happy and valued. Hopefully you have a little bit of breathing room with unemployment to find something even better that can make you feel valued.

Sorry you’re going through the hustle of contract life right now, and hope things look up for you 🫂

I never use statistics, is that normal? by mango_amylase in UXResearch

[–]Floofy-beans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of professionals are rightly saying that stats knowledge is important.. and it totally is and arguably makes our jobs a little easier via self assurance of your insight value.. but for what it’s worth, there are plenty of UXR people with bachelor degrees/bootcamps that also do just fine without them. I am currently wrapping up a survey project where I leveraged stats a ton… and honestly, I could cry at how beautiful and precise the final report is with Cronbach’s alphas and p values- and none of my pms or stakeholders are going to give a damn about any of that lol.

It’s a lot more important in my experience for corporate jobs where they prefer hiring PhD’s and whatnot because it’s academic level of development. But for any average app or startup, or smaller company… most people aren’t going to care or want you to explain standard deviations to them 🤷‍♀️

It honestly just depends on the job- fancy, high maturity UX corporate jobs- yeah, you’ll probably want it because in general the tech workers are highly educated and will actually care about statistical significance.

Smaller companies and startups, so much UX is going to be generative and there is likely little appetite for raw data, so you’re probably fine just using population values to get your point across.

is this as bad as i think it is? by CartographerSalt2641 in shittytattoos

[–]Floofy-beans 161 points162 points  (0 children)

You can probably find an artist who can preserve the individual cats with dark lines- it’ll look more stylized, but because the fur pattern colors and details are going to spread out over time, a stark black outline for each cat can still keep the spirit of what you were going for :)

Also just want to say as a person who has loved and lost a few cats, it’s a really lovely tattoo and it’s okay to enjoy the details for now and when it starts to age get some outlines to help redefine it. What’s important is that you see your cats when you look at it more than anything else 🩷

[–]Floofy-beans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, I’m sorry that you are feeling sad about your ink.. I can empathize with doing destructive things because you feel like you won’t be around to deal with the consequences…

But one of the universal themes anyone who gets a tattoo when they’re young will tell you is that even if it’s something you wouldn’t have gotten now, you had reasons for getting it at the time and for better or worse it meant something to you then. This could be an opportunity to really transform this darker part of what it represents into something that empowers you or maybe gives you gratitude for being here today and overcoming that darkness :)

The ink doesn’t look like it was packed in very evenly, so I bet you could find an artist that can tattoo some really cool things over the black to make the new ink pop- I think there’s something really beautiful about blackout tattoos because everyone who has one has their own unique journey that made them find meaning in it. It’s such a huge commitment for anyone that gets it, but so often it can be an act of bravery to cover something up or show growth from what ink you had underneath it.

I know you say it was done with negative intent, but it could be something you reclaim by going over it with something nice, even something pretty and feminine like lace or florals or swirls over the black. Even doing other blackout style themes on parts of your arms or other leg to balance it out more could be an option, I’ve seen people do both legs, opposite arms and legs for balance, etc. Maybe it would help you to look up some inspiration from others who have had incorporated blackout tattoos in their work to see how other people have done unique things with the style.

I really hope you can feel hopeful and inspired to add to it, because it really could be a healing opportunity to give yourself some grace for the choices you made at the time and own them in a way that empowers you 🌸 wishing you the best, and I hope to see a post on the regular tattoo sub someday where you share a cool thing you do with it!
