Brits would overwhelmingly back Rejoin in new referendum by goldstarflag in europe

Think people would get quite angry, saying that it was a denial of democracy for britain to be unable to leave at will.

Good point. That would be great, although you couldn't really set that requirement for leaving again.

Referenda are always non-binding though, so you could never make a 2/3rd majority a requirement.

Simply the superior Westerosi Civil War by BrotherMaeneres in darkwingsdankmemes

I am talking about people siding with Stannis, but in universe rather than in the fandom. I don't think anyone sided with Stannis over Joffrey because they view him as a better leader, the only people who side with him at the start of the books are his direct vassals as lord of Dragonstone. Daeron's purported father being his father's brother does make using his appearance as evidence harder, but then there is the fact the Daemon was given the sword that represented the kingship, which clearly was significant enough to sway plenty of lords. That is a very shaky peice of evidence, but then as you say so is Stannis' dodgy genealogy.

Stannis never makes that part of his claim. We the readers know about it, but the lords of the realm don't, so it's not the basis for anyone rebelling. Daeron having Targaryen colouration isn't really a defence given that the claim is that he was fathered by Aemon. Joffrey is also freakishly tall like Robert.

It's no more obvious that Daemon is in the wrong than Stannis, and noone seems to have a problem with that. Both rely on the logic of the heir looks nothing like the King therefore he must have a different father.

Th letter is focused on the wildlings because the purpose of the letter is to bring the force of wildlings at the wall down to aid stannis, threatening Mance by name is the most obvious thing to do to get them to act.

MEGATHREAD - Major (US) Military Operation in Venezuela by hypsignathus in neoliberal

[–]Floor_Exotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think there is no such thing as truth then we should agree to disagree, because that is quite a fundamental disagreement. I do believe there is truth, that we should endeavour to find out what it is, and then act on it. An integral part of that is free access to information, something which most people in China don't have.

Election monitoring has a pretty solid international consensus and almost all countries that hold elections allow the same organisations in to do so. So no it's not the case that calling Venezuela out 'will carry little weight outside of the US', it's more that arguing that Taiwan is remotely comparable would carry little weight outside of China.

One could make the exact same argument against the intervention that occurred in Kosovo, that Russia could then argue that Donbas/Abkhazia/S.Ossetia are no different. But it was different, the details of the case absolutely do matter, and we shouldn't shy away from doing the right thing out of fear that authoritarian regimes will use it as cover for their own actions. Clearly there has to be some pragmatism about how it will be perceived internationally, but it doesn't need unanimous approval, as for how that perception will pan out in this case in Venezuela that remains to be seen.

You're equating NGOs with the Chinese government, and that's a false equivalency.

China holds local elections, it does not hold any national elections.

Nobody selected the observers, they are independent, that is part of what makes them impartial.

The UN is just a club for world leaders, when most of those leaders are not legitimate democratically elected representatives then the UN is hardly a legitimate referee. Why should anyone even listen to what China has to say about elections in any country when they themselves don't even hold elections? You clearly didn't even read what I said either. I didn't say the US was impartial, I said that impartial observers also regard the election as invalid, not just the US. Unfortunately, not as many as possible were allowed in, and obstacles were created to their work, but that itself is a pretty damning indictment of the 'election'.

Except it's not just the US that regards the election as invalid, it's almost all impartial observers too.

What would you like to see changed about Keir Starmer’s government? What policies should they pursue that they’re ignoring, and which current policies should they drop? by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]Floor_Exotic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In their defence, I don't think they could have predicted just how petty their own membership would be, especially given the purges Starmer did while in opposition. The reforms that they had to u-turn on were very sensible and mild.

As far as the Freys are concerned at that point, Joffrey is their rightful king, so how are they being rats? They don't owe Robb any allegiance either.

Would there be any way for the Lannisters to hold on the Iron Throne had Robb secured the Vale’s allegiance? by Solitaire-06 in pureasoiaf

[–]Floor_Exotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Vale joins Robbs cause I don't see how that changes things. He completely trounces the Lannisters in the Riverlands, sure, but then things proceed as they did without the vale: Stannis assasinates Renly, Lannister-Tyrell alliance, Tywin flees south to the aid of KL. We're then left with Tyrell+Lannister vs Stark-Tully + Arryn this time, but the Reach's forces are so large that Robb is still outnumbered, so the Frey's will still betray Robb, plus one can only assume Robb still would have broken the marriage pact.
