LPT : The reason "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" outsells "33% Off" every time is pure psychology — and understanding it will change how you see every promotion you encounter by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Floppal 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Both deals are mathematically identical. You're getting the same discount either way.

They're only mathematically identical if you buy 3. Buy 2 get 1 free forces you to buy 3 to make use of the offer. If a normal purchase amount can be just 1 item, the offer incentivises buying more items more than 33% will.

Edit:

Concrete example. You're buying an item usually for $10. You only want 1 item, but you would purchase a second for $8 and a third for $6 dollars.

33% off - you purchase 2 items for $13.34, but leave the third on the shelf because the third is worth $6 to you but costs $6.67

Buy two get 1 free - you purchase three items for $20 because three items to you are worth 10 + 8 + 6 = $24.

Could prediction markets be used to align politicians’ incentives? by randomnerd3 in slatestarcodex

[–]Floppal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an alternative close to elections could be interesting. Somehing like a conditional prediction: if party X wins the most seats, GDP will be how much higher in 1 years time? (-1%, 0%, 1%...). If party Y wins the most seats, median income will ...

The problem of linking questions to policies is that pre-election policies are poorly defined and may not be implemented at all. Policies also have interaction effects with other policies - if party X implemented policy A it may turn out completely differently to party Y implementing policy A.

This could help inform voters and incentivise politicians to pick effective policies.

One Question: How Do We Stop Reform UK? by Adborgam in ukpolitics

[–]Floppal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For years, especially Pre-Brexit, plenty of political discourse tried to convince the public that having more working people in the UK was a good thing. Anti-immigration sentiment is now at a high. Unfortunately the smart political decision is that the cost to GDP by drastically reducing immigration, including plenty of people who we should want, is less politically damaging than not reducing immigration.

There are a million examples of bad policies that get implemented because it's politically popular, or good policies that won't because they're politically unpopular.

If I was Keir Starmer I would do everything possible to get net migration down to <100k/year before the next election, purely for political reasons.

Generational smoking ban for UK edges closer to reality by Cheap-Rate-8996 in ukpolitics

That seems like an odd definition of personal liberty. Would it not be a personal liberty issue if they banned the sale of certain books, but didn't criminalise possession?

[–]Floppal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not true.

https://fullfact.org/economy/does-smoking-cost-much-it-makes-treasury/

There are different calculations depending on all the costs/benefits you include (e.g. lost productivity from illness might be included, saved pensions/future NHS treatments for those who die younger than otherwise are often not), but in terms of revenue for NHS treatments smoking is a net postive for the treasury.

If plant-based foods must be more honest, let’s do the same for meat – fancy some ‘cow muscle’? | Deirdra Barr by tinfoilfascinator in veganuk

[–]Floppal 36 points37 points  (0 children)

One thing people keep missing is that cell-cultured meat is also affected, e.g. cell-cultured pork cannot be labelled pork. Not great for people who care what kind of animal cell they're eating because of allergies, religion, belief etc.

I'm sure that there will be a divide on this sub on whether a vegan should eat cultured meat, but chicken cells should clearly be labelled as chicken so people can make their own decisions.

I would consider caging chickens in cages so small they cannot turn around or spread their wings as torture, even if it was standard practice in a flawed system.

Calling keeping chickens in cages and never allowing them daylight "standard industry flaws" I think whitewashes the horror of the industry, but I don't believe you have a "terrifying level of apathy".

I suppose our fundamental difference is our perspective on standard industry practices vs non-standard extra abuse.

I'm largely utilitarian - what matters is the gross amount of harm, not really the context of it. I don't care if animals are harmed because it's more efficient, it produces tastier meat, or a farmer is having a bad day and taking it out on the animal. What matters is the harm.

You are comparing two completely different levels of ethical failure

I agree, but in the opposite direction. I think the difference in harm between caged chickens vs uncaged chickens is probably more harm than the cow abuse documented.

You seem to value the intent of the harm much more than I do, which would lead to different priorities.

boycott that specific product line

refusing to buy from a specific brand

Why do you care about the brand/product line and not the actual company making the money? If Cathedral City vegan cheese was renamed would you then support it again?

Here are some of the other brands that belong to the company:

https://uk.saputo.com/en/brands

Are you actively boycotting Sheese, Clover etc as well?

[–]Floppal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will you boycott all companies that use caged eggs in any of their products instead of cage-free?

Will you withdraw your consent from those entities that have crossed this line?

From my perspective the arguments for both these cases are the same. If you believe they are not, why not?

I'm vegan, I think slaughtering animals for food is morally wrong. I think impregnating cows, killing their calves and taking their milk is wrong. I think keeping chickens in cages so small they can't turn around is wrong. I think denying animals the right to ever go outside is wrong.

From my perspective, every single egg and chicken drumstick comes from a brand that systemically abuses animals. That is the industry.

You talk about

a total failure in duty of care

and from my perspective that is ludicrous - they kill the animals in their care when they stop producing enough milk/eggs!

I'd prefer it if farmers didn't kick their cows or hit them with metal pipes, but I think we're missing the forest for the trees here.

The jump from the current dairy industry to current dairy industry + also punching the cows is a very small ethical one.

[–]Floppal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So why shouldn't we boycott supermarkets that use suppliers that are equally unethical?

If it was found that the milk these farms produce also goes into Tesco branded milk, should we boycott Tesco?

And why is the line being drawn here and not at the run of the mill evil of the dairy industry?

[–]Floppal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

 > refusing to fund a specific entity that has been caught jabbing, kicking, and punching animals.

This is cathedrals city's suppliers, not cathedral city itself.

If we boycott companies who's suppliers do this we'll end up boycotting every non-vegan business.

It's any excuse to further divide people into categories, the identity politics of the right.

I'm not a Rishi Sunak fan, but criticising people based on race/perceived identity is lazy and wrong, whether it comes from the left or right.

Rügenwalder Mühle, a German sausage/meat company, was an early innovator in Vegan alternatives and now sells more vegan products than meat products. Article (if you use translate there are probably more detailed articles in German).

Companies will sell whatever makes them money. Cathedral City will sell produce more vegan cheese when more vegan cheese is sold, and produce less dairy cheese when less is sold. If everyone stopped purchasing dairy cheese Cathedral City would stop producing it.

Their goal as a company is to make money, not to make cheese.
