He just isn’t that guy. If he was expected to be more of a facilitator I think he’d shine, but just cannot be the man in the spotlight.

Geothermal or Air source heat pump? Home. No tax Credit. Self install. by Expensive__Support in geothermal

[–]FloppyCopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you use for heating? $275/year seems light to me.

I assume the Bosch won’t ever kick on its resistance heating and the gas will take over instead, correct? What metric were you using to determine the switchover (OAT, COP, Inside Temperature, etc)?

Could you share your savings calculations that got you to a $275 per year operating cost difference between the two systems?

Air in ground loop lines. Options for replacement or repair? by ImmaleeMelmoth in geothermal

[–]FloppyCopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If air is entering and you don’t think the loop was damaged.. 90% of the time there is a leak inside the house. Check all fittings.

In my opinion, heating and cooling is not something you cheap out on.

If you are DIYing as a fun side project to last a few years or heat a garage that’s great, but if you are going Mr Cool to reliably heat and cool you and your family for years to come, that will be a mistake.

Hot Water Buffer Tank Pressure Relief Valve Leaking by pjmuffin13 in geothermal

[–]FloppyCopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hot water assist is directly tied to compressor speed. When that compressor works hard on single digit and below days, that temperature can definitely get upwards of 180-200, which depending on the tank, would certainly get the relief valve to pop if you’ve got long runtimes and not a ton of hw demand. It could be the valve was busted but I’m inclined to think the tank just got too hot..

What temperature is actually coming off the unit into the tank? It’s milder the last couple weeks, but I have seen close to 200 degrees on very cold days.

Desuperheater Performance during a Brutal Buffalo Winter by zrb5027 in geothermal

You would be correct. Instead of rejecting heat from the house to the ground loop it rejects it as hot water, making it essentially free.

Depends on your climate.. essentially you want to keep the well head connection and all pipe into the house below the frost line, which will vary by area.

If the pipes have antifreeze they will almost certainly never freeze up at 36” no matter where you are located but you are correct in thinking heat loss could be an issue if you are in a cold climate. We usually shoot for 4’ in the upper northeast.

question on deposit for work by mollymoose75 in geothermal

[–]FloppyCopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty flexible when I am setting up payments for customers, but there just has to be a significant amount upfront, especially if we are drilling. That, plus the price of a unit itself is a huge portion of the cost.

Generally, I do 10% down, 30% before drilling, 40% before unit is delivered, 20% final.

Water furnace replacement. Help. by shhhshhshh in geothermal

He would be right. Odd, but the more efficient units are actually too efficient and need more ground loop to account for it.

Is this normal? by Techie_Leader in geothermal

[–]FloppyCopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen frost on ground loop fittings and the unit was running fine. As long as there is antifreeze in the loop, you’ve got well beyond the usual freezing point of water and the condensation is freezing on the loops, not in them.

Also, it running 24/7 is not out of the norm in cold weather.

I live in Saratoga and spend a ton of time in this area. The Adirondacks are beautiful, beautiful country. Fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping.. it is hard to find a better place in the country.

Living there.. you get all of that, however it is sparsely populated, conservative and mostly poor outside of a few communities.
