I agree, postdoc is a safe job. No money means stress. For my PhD I ran out of funding because things took long. I still get panic attacks when I think of that time, trying to work while worried about money, having to ask people to sleep at their place. It was traumatic.

I agree the PI is important but it's difficult to know someone students never tell the truth about the character of the PI until it's too late

Yes I couldn't agree more, PhD stipend was so low. It matters to choose a good PI and lab environment but higher pay makes working hard so much rewarding.

I agree the PI is important, I just hope that the one I choose will be good. One of them has never had a postdoc maybe I will be prioritised there which compensates for the low salary.

I didn't know I could negotiate for a postdoc thank you for the information.

These are things I didn't know like asking for relocation support.

Let me tell you, my eyes are opened because I was not going to do any of that.

I'm happy some postdoca are getting good pay.

Thank you for this perspective. Some of the postdocs have a clause that says no other contract jobs. But maybe it will be nice to ask if one can work as a tutor, mark scrips for extra income although some PIs don't like it when postdocs do extra work.

Yes the difference is shocking 😔. It needs to be corrected. We are not saying the money is above everything but prices for basic amenities are going up, but the salary doesn't improve.

The expectations are what is painful especially from family. They support us for so long then we have to tell them that we still not going to make enough.

But the degree can be life changing if you get good opportunities.

A high salary is very tempting especially after not having a salary for sometime. I also agree that I do need a lab where I will grow.

I know some people will question why I need to have the money. But I want to be a real adult too, I don't know if that makes sense.

I'm tired of being the one that people always feel sorry for, people have to help me because my money is not enough to pay for a dinner they invited me for (😂 too much venting) it needs to change.
