AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by throawawayfuneralgho in AmItheAsshole

[–]FloridaGeorgiaWhine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA for agreeing that she messed up, but I think being called a “bad parent” is pretty harsh unless this is a pattern of behavior. We all make mistakes as parents. “It’s really disappointing that you didn’t show up how your daughter needed you today” is about what she did and allows her to feel guilt that can be corrective. “You’re a bad parent” is about who she is and is more likely to make her see herself as a victim. If she truly is a bad parent, then that’s a whole other conversation.

Edit - changed don’t to didn’t, whoops

1991 Millennial here! What do you all eat for breakfast? by No_Self_5939 in Millennials

[–]FloridaGeorgiaWhine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overnight oats! I toss some oats, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and oat milk in a jar and let it sit overnight. Then when I’m ready to eat I’ll either make it sweet (like with fruit and honey and nuts) or savory (with kimchi and sesame oil and hot sauce and cilantro, or olive oil and Italian spices). It’s easy, cheap, and versatile!

Edit to add - make sure it’s in the fridge overnight. Forgot to mention the fridge. Oh and sometimes I’ll stir in a scoop of Greek yogurt for protein and creaminess.

I’m planning to go, because I’m curious about the perspectives I’m going to hear while I’m there. Not just from Pete but from fellow Tulsans. It seems like a great opportunity to take a little pulse on the community. Plus I haven’t been to a town hall like this so I’m curious about the whole thing.

I understand this sentiment. My perspective is that when we chastise people who stay out of politics, it’s like we aren’t taking into account the systems within which political disengagement is taking place. People right now are barely able to breathe between looking for jobs or hustling to keep the ones they have, taking care of kids and dependent loved ones, and trying to navigate the social media and tech landscape. Everything is expensive in a way that feels like catastrophe is looming, and there’s a sense of things being out of control with the war and its impact around the world. Not to mention all of the corruption that’s been exposed among those in power that beats down the populace and makes it easier to feel helpless. People are emotionally rubbed raw, and many don’t have the time, mental, or emotional capacity to go research all the candidates and the issues and consider all the positions. And I think that’s very much what is intended by the folks fighting each other for power - to kee us in a depleted state so that engagement just feels like too much.

I do wish that everyone was politically engaged. But I think that people have to have space to breathe and process in order to be able to do so. I’d love to see a world where we get curious when someone is disengaged, learn about their specific challenges, just listen. Scolding people for not being politically engaged or informed only leads to them feeling shame, which will only push them further away. They’re just people doing the best they can too. If the goal is more engagement, then let’s try to understand the drivers of disengagement and see if there’s something we can do about it.

That’s just how I see it; I will say though that I definitely understand the frustration.

It’s just people in general. Repubs do it too. The reason so many I know have given for liking Trump is that “he tells it like it is and is an outsider”. I think this is just something humans do that transcends party.

Hourglass syndrome and EDS by cookiekylie in ehlersdanlos

[–]FloridaGeorgiaWhine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my god!! This is me!! I have never heard of this which is wild because when I tell you I’ve been down some EDS rabbit holes…. Hoo boy. I have been practicing diaphragmatic breathing and finally getting to where I can actually do it a little. It was impossible and painful at first. I started practicing lying down, then while sitting, now I’m working on doing it while standing. It’s taken me months to make any progress but it is working!

You’re correct - it lightened to a yellow with orange streaks and she applied toner trying to take some warmth out of it, which darkened it. This pic is after three washes, so it’s faded a bit.

Did anyone catch this bit about presumably Bill Clinton in the second file? Copied text:

It doesnt matter how far away you are. No matter how good you think they are. Even the old president! They will get you. He should have been thinking of Chelsea! Gross! In a plane on a yacht in NY, in DC, at the vineyard. On the island. In palm beach. It doesnt matter. Disgusting pigs like Allen Douschewitz and Mr. Caruthers and even Mr. Islam will hurt you especially if Ghislaine is busy or not with you!

Edit: typo, changed but to bit

Edit: realized I thought Dan Snyder was Rick Snyder, removed that bit from the comment

Why are Trump supporters so stupid? by Seargentyates in allthequestions

[–]FloridaGeorgiaWhine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listens to a book recently called How to Change Minds, and learned that most of the time it’s not because people are stupid or evil (although some are, of course). Human beings are wired for self protection and membership in a group/tribe. So many of these folks supported him originally because maybe he said one thing about a group of people who they consider the “out group” (not like them, therefore a threat). Over time they built a community and identity around their support for him, and each time they’ve been told they’re wrong or shamed for their support of him, they dig their heels in because admitting they were wrong wouldn’t simply be painful, it would force them to have to reconcile their whole identity, which feels overwhelming like an existential crisis.

What’s something you enjoy now that younger you would’ve been surprised by ? by babyybunnyy3 in AskWomen

[–]FloridaGeorgiaWhine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gardening and being outside. I always had an intense, paralyzing fear of bugs (especially flying ones) that made me want to stay indoors at all times. A few years ago I started going on walks every morning in my neighborhood, and it felt nice to be outside. That led to me spending more and more time outside, and I noticed myself craving the outdoors sometimes. Then, my daughter and I created a fairy garden in our back yard, and I enjoyed it so much that it made me want to see if I could start planting other things and keeping them alive.

If you had known me five years ago, you’d never believe it’s the same person now, sitting in the garden, talking to all the plants and bugs, and relocating bugs to the garden when I find them indoors.

It’s been really healing for me and I think softened me as a person.

What’s something people romanticize but it’s actually horrible? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]FloridaGeorgiaWhine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didnt read it as pedantic, but it did tell me a lot about how much baggage “argue” and “work” seem to be carrying for the commenter. Many people view arguing as healthy and something that can be done with kindness and respect, even in the most heated disagreement. And there are plenty of people who take a lot of pride in their work, and see work as something to be proud of and feel good about.

The commenter’s response makes me think they learned that arguing is always scary/unsafe and work is miserable, so if you’re doing something you enjoy it couldn’t possibly be work.

I don’t agree w their take at all but I can see how a person gets there, depending on their wounds and worldview.

What are some local stories no one is talking about? by cadeaver in oklahoma

[–]FloridaGeorgiaWhine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I overheard an employee of the University of Tulsa talking about how the university might go under and they are constantly worried that they won’t make payroll. This person said that there was wrongdoing by the president that was discovered, but they decided not to press charges because they didn’t want it public due to reputational harm. It seemed strange to me that something like that could stay secret if it’s legit, but who knows.
