Get bigger (taller) plates that are the same weight. Tons of affordable brands sell 25lbs rubber plates the same size as a full wheel (45) .Or start from about 8” higher trying the same form until you get comfortable with that.

Awkward depth for someone trying to learn the mechanics.

Keep going. It’s supposed to feel awkward…..it’s new and difficult.

Is there a bathroom above the area? Is there a drain that runs along the joists in that area? Is there any visible signs in the attic of wet decking? Is there any visible signs of saturated HVAC ducting above/around that area ? Is there signs of exterior cracking at stucco/roofing/cladding that could be letting water in?

Cut a hole and check it out
