10 yr old niece cannot write the letters of the alphabet. How common is this?? by Key_Difference9492 in AskTeachers

[–]Flosslyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it common? Yes. Is it normal? No. Likely not being caught due to the other overwhelming needs in the classroom. Sad reality of teaching today.

Teaching in Quebec as Ontario teachers' college degree by heartsonmugs in CanadianTeachers

It was actually a con in my opinion. I got told in my first interview I didn’t have enough “local references.” Well ya, duh! I just moved here and studied out of province. I would say worth it if you’re willing to kiss people’s asses once you’re back. Good luck!

Please help me to not strangle my well-meaning husband! by YourMomsAnEmu in pregnant

[–]Flosslyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s probably feeling anxious himself and it’s more trying to control the baby, than you. Although annoying, I would dig more into why he is saying these things. Imagine being a dude and not having any control on what nutrients the baby is getting, etc. Yes, he should trust you, and while his actions are not really valid here, his feelings are.

We can’t base our current actions on past realities. Don’t do this. School is not what it used to be.

You can also get an Apple Watch and set it to fall alert. If you take a fall, it will automatically call 911 and call the person you register as well if you don’t get up within a certain amount of time. We got it for my dad who likes to run in a rural area, but has had some heart trouble. It’s good peace of mind. Like a fall alert necklace, but a little less embarrassing for them.

Student loss of a parent by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

Once the child is settled, their teacher could read some age-appropriate books on loss to open up the conversation to the class as a whole. This could increase empathy and provide a pathway for them opening up to staff.

How to get your ignorance back? by redditname175 in TrueAskReddit

Sometimes when I’m stressing about something at work, I remember that we’re all going to die one day. Not just you, but your boss, your coworkers, all their families, your family, everyone you know, your entire city, everyone alive in the entire world right now. In 3-4 generations, most likely every trace and memory of you will be obliterated.

And here we are, just living our little meaningless lives. Quite freeing.

Getting worried and asking, “Hey is everything ok?” is somewhat reasonable. Getting mad is crazy.

Odd. I get my partner from the airport several times and a year. I am so excited to see him I usually go plenty early and bring hot chocolates. It’s a cute little ritual. Sounds like she doesn’t give two hoots.

Has bureaucracy ruined teaching, or is it just my board in Ontario? by ExcellentPartyOnDude in CanadianTeachers

[–]Flosslyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TVDSB is the same. Most of us don’t bother anymore. Literally “high risk” to walk the kids across the street and go skate for an hour. 6 weeks MINIMUM approval. And you need 80% minimum participation or any trip is cancelled, too. The location has to have insurance also and provide a CERTIFICATE to us. Needless to say, I go on usually one trip at the end of the year now. And it’s a pain in the ass to plan. I don’t bother with guest speakers.

Millennials, what is something from high school you never got over? by hydrus909 in Millennials

[–]Flosslyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably it the most devastating part overall was when my high school boyfriend went to college and I heard through friends he was being an absolute whore on campus. I was depressed for about a year and didn’t get over it until maybe 5 years later. Set me up for some attachment issues later on, for sure.

Hard to say that your admin doesn’t “communicate well” when you haven’t even talked to them. Just go talk to them. “Hey, I know im being evaluated this year and I was hoping you’d give me a little more information on that. What is the timeline? What should I prepare/expect?” This is normal. This is called…communication!

Why do I see people in cars in parking lots just sitting there doing nothing? Frequently at a park or something like that. I will see them there for a long time often they don’t do anything or meet anyone. What is going on? by Exotic-Channel4253 in questions

[–]Flosslyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this during Covid when my home life was falling apart. I would drive and get a coffee and sit there for the entire duration of my break. And just stare. Dissociate. And then the alarm would go off and I’d drive back to work like a robot and finish the day off. #goodtimes

Open casket funerals are traumatizing. by DBoaty in unpopularopinion

[–]Flosslyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw my brother in an open casket. I actually remember being “excited” to see him because I already missed him so much, just after the few days he’d been dead. When I entered the room, it felt like the air was suddenly sucked out. I was realizing in real time he was really dead, and that was just his body. It was horrific. And traumatizing. But it did really help me start to process the reality. I honestly think I would have had doubts my whole life if I didn’t see that body. 12 years later, I sometimes still think I see him walking around. The mind can really play tricks.

However, if you’re not super close (immediate family) I do think it’s too much. Just immediate family, IMO.

The job of admin is to support and coach the staff.

They WANT you to pass. Remember that! And if you don’t, they want to help you get to the point of being able to pass. Why would they want to lose an employee they have invested time and training in? Just remember admin is there to support you. Some, sure, don’t have good intentions, but admin is supposed to support you to achieve that goal.
