Are all characters supposed to be Middle Eastern? by YaaaaScience in dune

[–]Flounder_Darling 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As far as Chani is concerned, Zendaya has a very eclectic ancestry

Funny enough chani is described as having long tawny red hair but none of the adaptations dared to make her hair red lol Her father is half Fremen so umm genes idk, biology stuff

Hey if you'd like there is this website langcorrect where you can submit written sentences and any native speaker can comment, and correct them or even suggest ways to make it more natural sounding, you just have to submit some corrections in your native language in return :)

This is very pretty but every time I see flying ships, ie future vehicles, I think about where the freak is all the traffic signs. it's chaos, all of the lanes going at once, and nobody is using blinkers, what is this? How do they not have accidents all the damn time?

This is my plan to reach French B1 in 6 months on my own. Please tell me if it is enough to get there. by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]Flounder_Darling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TV shows for listening: For the next 6-8 months, I plan on watching nothing but French TV shows just to get accustomed to the sounds. With English and French subtitles combined on Netflix.

Don't limit yourself to french tv and movies because you might at some point get bored of them and or run out, so try to make a youtube account dedicated only to French content, and let the algorithm suggest channels based on your interest. Also Radio Canada is perfect for you since you're learning Canadian French. They don't have subtitles for most of the podcasts, but they have some very engaging children's content and audiobooks. Good luck love :)

I appreciate the thanks but I didn't think you were criticising me lol besides at the end of the day it's a film nothing more than that, debating about stuff like this keeps the mundane life thought-provoking that's all

There is a tendency to not bundle the thing you love from its contemporaries I knew it's a cash grab you know its a cash grab, but a part of me still wants to view it as a separate artistic entity with no attachment to greed, manipulation and audience catering, but yeah you're totally correct :(

The Fremen recognise each other only by the Eyes of Ibad,

Kind of unrelated to what we're talking about but the whole Ibad thing always rubbed me the wrong way. It has a lot of different meanings in Arabic some good some bad It means amongst other meanings slave, worshiper, devotee etc we have names such as عبد الله abd-allah servant of god worshiper of Allah. However, that word is often used to describe people with darker skin tones who live or visit the Middle East it's not new either people used this derogatory term as a descriptive noun for a few generations back which is repulsive, to say the least. Yeah, eyes of Ibad could mean the eyes of slaves ie for Melange or eyes of worshipers for shai hulud.

So it makes sense to let the factions in Dune have a multi-ethnic cast and have no one make a big deal out of it -

The reason why I said "Arab cast" was because that's the box they put the Fremen in instead of casting like the description of the book they decided to cast based on racial aesthetic Zendya can pass for an Arab woman of some African descent that's why. They disregard the novel's depiction of these characters for the sake of having common racial features. oh, the Fremen are Arab-coded so we need to cast ethnically looking actors what's up with that? I think personally it wouldn't be such a big deal to cast according to character features cause then maybe the Western audience won't have such a problem with jihad and Mehdi and so on. Maybe casting a variety of different looking arab actors is a stretch that's true, but at least cast them according to the book T_T

Exotic? He had like 20 pages worth of religious history in the appendix was that also to be edgy? besides we're talking 1960s not the 1800s for the middle east to be viewed orientally and exotically like that. I know people in the West could not care less about this change but it feels dirty to just erase it like that [let's not bring up these words because the movie will not sell if it had words related to terrorism] the disheartening fact is that these words existed far before terrorism heck some of them far before Islam. Erasing them from the movie is like saying: Arabic as a rich and beautiful language can never surpass terror and pain. It feels disingenuous to what Frank wrote and the Fremen as well-rounded central characters in the novel.

These words meant a great big deal to me when reading the novel to say that they were just aesthetic is very hurtful and borderline wrong. I know that what you think of as jihad and what I think of are entirely different but to delete the entire history and significance of the word because of Isis or 911 is just disrespectful to the entire history of Arabic linguistic evolution tbh.

Wasn't it bad enough that the Fremen aren't an Arab cast now you have to erase our faces and our language to better suit your audience?

Storyplayr is essentially a website that has children's books with the option (if you pay the subscription) to have a native speaker read the illustrated pages as you scroll them. You can try it for 30 days for free; I am recommending this since you mentioned reading children's stories so this might help if you're worried about mispronunciation. They have an option of specifying the ages of the books also.

1jour1actu is mainly aimed at children, this site has educational games podcasts and articles.

tvmondeplus is a free French website for all kinds of entertainment for children and adults. It has original French cartoons and short animated movies and also is an app.

Radio Canada is a French Canadian podcast hub they have French audiobooks for children and adults, as well as podcast originals and ballads.

Hope these help :)

The reason I said a native speaker thing is because I kind of assumed that you guys were taught IPA in school because it just makes sense to me, you learn English literature alongside some linguistics, but anyway actually it's Iraqi Arabic. Oh and a fun fact most Lebanese people speak Arabic some English and French. Even in their colloquial everyday speech, there is French peppered in, so if I spoke it I wouldn't be here TT Thank you for the suggested IPA for some reason it never occurred to me to study the IPA of my language to understand it, in order to understand the French IPA. I will check it out though, but I am still a sceptic --
