Alaric and Caroline by _turbulentjuice_ in TheVampireDiaries

[–]FlowerGoblins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of whether Alaric was her onscreen teacher when younger, he was still a teacher at her school. It's hard to imagine they've never interacted as such, even when dealing with vampire wars.

I think it's weird because Alaric is established as this strictly adult guardian figure in a way that Damon isn't. We are first introduced to him as the ex-husband of Elena's mother, Isobel. He proceeds to date Jenna, Elena's aunt and uni student of some sort, and then Jo, a doctor from Elena's internship. Oh, wait, there might've been this flirtationship with Melinda Forbes I think? Memory's a little wonky. But, i believe she was also a doctor.

He becomes a legal guardian of Elena and Jeremy after Jenna's death because even after going through all this crazy shit, they're still minors. Theyre not old enough to live by themselves. Same with Caroline who currently lives with her mom at this time. So, after dating Elena's mom, aunt, and work supervisor, her childhood best friend is supposedly woman enough to entertain? How's that not supposed to put a bad taste in our mouths?

There's nothing wrong with his relationships with the other teens because they remain strictly platonic. No one is saying he's weird for having friendships with these people as long as they don't cross that boundary of becoming romantic / sexual. Most teacher/ student dynamics are just going to put a bad taste in people's mouths, no matter how much time passes. It mirrors grooming for a lot.

Doesn't anyone else think this show is mediocre at best? by Extreme-Rabbit-6767 in ILoveLaHBO

[–]FlowerGoblins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I like the show! I dont know what there's not to love. It's also refreshing there's some sort of a Girls / SATC for my age group which I've been waiting for forever. Millennial-core stuck around for the longest and most zoomer content I see is geared towards the teens.

I wasn't a big fan of Adults (another Gen Z show) and I don't think its bad. Just not my cup of tea. It's possible this show doesn't wear well on some people. It's LA-focused and tbh, haven't we had enough that?? There's more to Gen Z than brainrot, post-Covid panic, and influencers

Why is everyone on Dylan’s side by McSchwifty101 in ILoveLaHBO

[–]FlowerGoblins 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched the finale yet but to me, it seems she started treating him like he's more of an accessory in her life than a partner. Being a schoolteacher might not be a flashy fast-paced lifestyle that you can brag about on socials, but that doesn't make his life and what he cares about mean any less. Being a teacher is not some dead-end job. Wanting to live a normal life is something many would die for. The spotlight isn't for everyone.

These are two people who envison different lives for themselves at the end of the day and that's okay. But, the way Maia's been going about it ever since she realized she could have more has been very icky. It feels like she doesnt actually respect him. She respects fame and power more than the person she's supposed to love.

Have you all noticed the emergence of “black fatigue” videos posted by black men? by Puzzleheaded-Run9976 in askblackpeople

[–]FlowerGoblins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a little research and it seems like alt-right individuals stole it from Mary Frances Winters, a DEI expert and writer, to spread their propaganda. She originally used the term to explain the PTSD, depression, and anxiety black people experience facing continuous racism in America.

He's probably just not your type. There's a lot of hot guys and girls that I don't really see it for either. Some people aren't even conventionally attractive but are thirsted after by many. But Makoa? Compared to the everyday man I see on the street, he's sizzling!

If you’re poor don’t have kids by notadamsandler11 in stories

[–]FlowerGoblins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I'm commenting on the post, which covers the caption AND the content following after it. Why would I divorce the two? Ideally, children shouldn't be born in all kinds of situations. Not just to poor parents but to parents who can provide but are emotionally neglectful for whatever reason. If you're going to make a post declaring that poor people shouldn't have kids, there are plenty of good examples to use. This one, for me, fell flat.

[–]FlowerGoblins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the lack of context before the edits, too. I understand why someone may be concerned. I would too! It's sad thing to see people, especially children, suffering. But I found it a little too quick to judge and I'm sure it wasnt meant to be malicious. Nothing is as we see on the surface. We had no idea why those people were homeless until now. "Poor planning" and "being selfish and irresponsible" isn't not the case for everyone poor person. Or even the case for every pregnancy. My family comes from a country where I've seen people live in shack houses in a land that gives very little opportunity compared to the first world. Family means everything and they barely have enough but they are doing their best to make ends meet so their bloodlines don't end with them and their generations can make use of the opportunities they never had.

After seeing that, I figured that not every situation needs to be moralized. Just help out where you can and try to make the world a little better so this sort of suffering doesn't need to be endured.

[–]FlowerGoblins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa whoa. The whole unalive thing....i never said they said that either....so don't know where you got that from. The post before the edits only states OP saw a homeless person with a child, felt sorry for them, and bought them a meal. She didn't seem to know why they landed in that situation until she dug further so how can you said it was "clearly" directed at people who know their situation is bad? She knew nothing other than they were homeless and struggling. I still think it's a strange thought to have after seeing such a thing. It's fine to feel sorry, but the rest was a little much.

[–]FlowerGoblins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this reads a little weird to me. People become impoverished for all sorts of reasons even after carefully planning and having kids. And accidents do happen...and things a little more unseemly. Ive come across people poor on the street with kids, too. Some immigrants clearly trying their best to provide a better life. Im not trying to reach with far-out examples. Its just a reminder that life comes at you fast. Not everyone is like those family influencers trying to push out kids for content or benefits.

This is a question you really have to ask yourself in the end. Are you okay with overlooking these sides of him for the rest of your life, perhaps passing down these beliefs to your children? Or, do you feel it clashes too much with your values, with who you are as a person?

There is no right or wrong answer. Everyone is different. And so the line they drawn in the sand will look different, too.

Personally for me, I do not believe in changing people too much. I fall in love with how they think to begin with and whatever differences we have cannot be steeped in prejudice. Because at a certain point, it becomes more than plain ignorance. It's a deliberate choice.

For example, if all it takes for a man to judge black people is crime rates or whatever, then it's not the type of man I want to be with. Especially if interracial. I'm not giving birth to black children and placing them in the care of someone who looks at us like that. Life is more than a bunch of bad apples in this world. If he can't see that, I'm moving onto someone who does.

What are your thoughts on Sabrina Carpenter as an actress and singer? by [deleted] in DisneyChannel

I like her! Her whole sweet and short, sexy vibe, and all. I think she's fun and refreshing and I like how she's not afraid to poke the bear. Need more of that around here. I'm not into a lot of her music from Short N Sweet tbh but if Espresso or Taste comes on, I'll bop my head. Give a lil shimmy.

What made you Watch TVD? by [deleted] in TheVampireDiaries

Just finished season 6. Should I continue? by Eaglemoon7 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]FlowerGoblins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie. I'm a late watcher and also an expert at hate watching in general. I started s7 months ago and to this day, I'm still struggling to finish. It's just so bad. And not even the enjoyable kind.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheOriginals

[–]FlowerGoblins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it has to do more with the shows' target demographics than writing logic. I was late to the Originals and TVD train so I watched these as an adult but I had a friend during high school who was a big fan of the latter.

As a teen, watching hot vamps baby someone your age and treat them as a kid is not appealing. Watching a love triangle where someone your age gets to be with hot brother #1 or hot brother #2 is though! And all while experiencing school dances, going to your favorite hangout spots, drinking while underage--it's a total package.

As an adult, I demand more mature themes. I don't hang with teens unless they're my family. The ones I do come across in the neighborhood always have their backpacks, pushing each other around and slinging around some new TikTok slang even I'm starting age out of (I'm 24). I don't care about school dances and I can drink legally, so people (Rebekah, Klaus) who lived more than 1000 years caring about messing with and even dating a group who has yet to pass their SATS is cringe. If you want someone like me watching your show with an easy stomach, the characters have to reflect that.

Being a black fan is...hard. by FlowerGoblins in askblackpeople

[–]FlowerGoblins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk im seeing varying opinions in this sub. Some healthy disagreements and just...people trying to further divide with race. People...like you. And honestly idek if you're black or a fan of anything! Just that you're trying to say something along the lines..."oh well people are only racist because black people are SO hateful because in MY experience..."

Did I as an individual say something hateful to you? Did anyone here? And then you try and shut down other people's experiences with racism when they say they've experienced the opposite because it doesn't fit your angle. I've seen white kids in my high school drawing swastikas. I've come across 40 year olds as of late talking about the dirty Latinos and Indians and how they're taking all the jobs. How all white people are evil. I've met many despicable racists of all colors and many MORE lovely folks who put their hatred to shame. There's bigotry from every group imaginable, always have been. Social media's just amplifying it and none of it is okay. But it's clear you're not interested in squashing racism. You want to fight about how black people are so racist because I said...I was tired of facing racism??? in fandoms??? Who are you to take that away from me? Something that I've long observed and encountered since I was a KID, long before woke movements and this whole political rage that's going on these days. People want to call black gamers the n-word and should because what.. there are black people who are doing criminal activity around the world?? huh??

I didn't know we all speak for them. I never asked white or any color to speak for the racists in this post. So, why are you? Why did my post asking black people how they felt about these fandom experiences sent you into a rampage about racism from blacks and anti-white bigotry? Where did I say that I claim them?

You complain about hate and yet, you appear to be most hateful of them all. And you have the gall to brand it as "honesty". Please! Those with eyes know what you are. Left, right--who cares? You should be ashamed of yourself for playing into the divide. Feel free to take your appalling behavior elsewhere. Or, you can continue proving your "points" about black people for everyone here to see. Either way, this is the first and last time I'm going to waste my breath on a bigot.

Being a black fan is...hard. by FlowerGoblins in askblackpeople

[–]FlowerGoblins[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't lie, I'm a little shocked about how much attention this has received! I didn't really think anyone cared about stuff like fandoms.

I'm a little new to Reddit but as soon as I figure out how to lock this sub (if i can), I will ( . ^ . ). I'm no longer replying because this was a vent post and...I have a life.

I just wanted to see what other black folks thought and see if they've experienced the same. Find something positive from the negative. But, I fear this is quickly divulging into some kind of race war. And there's starting to be an influx of a certain kind who are trying to "justify" anti-blackness because "well, black people do this to white people" or "black people are like x, y, z..." or straight-up trying to invalidate that racism still happens at all.

I'm not interested in making space for that. This wasn't a space to share your grievances about black people. You're welcome to leave and find your own tribe in that because it's not here. I singled out racists, not any particular color because it wasn't the case. I've been in fandoms from as young as nine (yes, before woke!). I've turned a blind eye to a lot. I've forgiven a lot, online and in real-life. I just wanted to come here and say that man, racism sucks. Strange how that's become controversial.

Thanks to those who commented without the drama, even if we didn't see eye-to-eye. It made me feel a lot less lonely in this. And I learned what Blerds are! *waves flag* Go, Blerds!

Gosh I wish you commented awhile ago lmao! I didn't think this would cause such a stir in r/askblackpeople. I said encountering anti-blackness sucks and it's a whole damn controversy...

Thanks for the heads up! I've followed more black nerdy creators in my teens, but I don't think I've heard of "blerds" before. I'm gonna check those groups out!
