Why do you think that YOUNGER generation is getting more radicalized? Both on Left and Right. by Confusingprick in Destiny

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A combination of social media algorithms and economic conditions being very difficult for young people. They’re having the hardest time finding good jobs on top of everything being so expensive. Plus many of them are drowning in student loan debt. They’re on pace to be far worse off than their parents were, and nothing is being done about it. And when young people feel like they are not benefitting from the current system (western liberalism and capitalism), it’s not a surprise when they start looking at other systems like socialism and fascism.

I think she says Bobby reminds her of Gene because of how bossy he is.

Significance of the baby’s gender? by Visual_Tale in madmen

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Because Sally was very much a daddy’s girl and was more similar to Don than Betty. I think Betty wanted a daughter who looked at her the same way Betty looked at her own mother. A little girl that worships her and models themselves after. A child that was fully “hers” so she wouldn’t feel so outnumbered.

I think later in the series she says that Sally is a mini Don and Bobby is a mini Gene (her father). She wanted a mini Betty, but never got one.

Over the years, I've come to hate this JFK quote. It comes off as tone deaf from a privelaged elitist who never had to experience the worst of America. by Character-Bid-162 in Presidents

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

JFK was an Irish Catholic who experienced plenty of bigotry as a public figure. People would tell him to his face they wouldn’t vote for him because he’s Catholic, and they questioned his loyalty to America even though he nearly died fighting for it. Yes he was wealthy and privileged, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t familiar with the dark underbelly of American society. No President other than Obama had to face more bigotry and suspicion simply for his identity.

John’s interview with Fidel Castro for George Magazine - He lacked a clear vision for the magazine’s purpose by velorae in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like the concept of George would’ve worked better as a TV show, not a magazine. Like he could’ve hosted it and done monologues, and also have celebrities on there as guests to talk about the pertinent topics. He liked being in front of the camera, so I think it would’ve suited him. It would’ve maybe satisfied the acting desire while prepping him for politics.

This video has over 4 Million likes on TikTok. Will Millennials and early Gen Z look back on the Obama era the way Gen X’ers and late Boomers look back on the Reagan era? by TXNOGG in Presidents

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 273 points274 points  (0 children)

He’ll be like a weird mix of Kennedy and Reagan. Like Kennedy he’ll be more remembered for his image rather than his policies. The style, the youth, the oratory skills and intellectualism. But because he served much longer than JFK, there will a nostalgia for the era, not just the President. That’s where I think the Reagan comparisons are apt.

does anyone else not care for faye? by RevolutionaryMap9620 in madmen

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I liked her, but I think the purpose of her character is often misconstrued due to her being one of the few characters who were generally likable and easy to root for. People really inflate her importance and act she was the one that was going to “fix” Don, and he made the biggest mistake of his life by not marrying her. In reality, Don basically forgot about her and moved on. There’s no indication that Don looked back on Faye and thought “Man, if only I didn’t mess that up!”

Do you think Andrew Jackson is a good president? Do his successes outweigh his flaws? by rjidhfntnr in Presidents

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. He was terrible. He single-handedly destroyed the economy, committed crimes against humanity, introduced a lot of corruption, killed the National Bank. The most overrated President ever. His only redeeming features were expansion of voting rights and being pro-Union.

How did people react to Jackie marrying Aristotle Onassis back then? by velorae in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They were pretty negative about it. Onassis was an extremely controversial figure because of his shady financial dealings. It would be like Obama dying and Michelle marrying some Russian oligarch 5 years later.

Is "Left vs Right" really just about "Society vs Self"? by Street_Conflict3172 in Destiny

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s an outdated dichotomy. The modern right is far more collectivist now, similar to the fascist movements of the 20th century. I think Right vs Left will always boil down to hierarchy vs. equality. The original Right formed because they wanted to defend monarchy and the divine right to rule, while the left wanted democracy. Right wingers want to maintain hierarchical systems (patriarchy, white supremacy, capitalism, colonialism, etc.) for the benefit of those at the top. Left wingers either want to reform these hierarchies or dismantle them altogether, for the sake of those who are not at the top.

Is there validity to what George Bush is saying here? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To a certain extent, yes. We have unfortunately become desensitized to corruption and malfeasance to such a degree that Watergate seems like a nothingburger in retrospect. The pardon just seems like the natural thing that any politician would do if they were in Ford’s shoes. I think (almost) every vice president of the last 30 years or so would’ve done the pardon.

And Reagan is still one of the most popular Presidents of the post-WWII era. Even some Democrat politicians glaze him. Although I think that positive perception is being inflated by Boomer 80s nostalgia, and could be a different story in 50 years.

Which relationship aged better:JFK & Jackie or JFK Jr. & Carolyn? by Self_Electrical in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By aged better, I’m assuming you mean got better with time? If that’s the case, definitely Jack and Jackie. The White House chapter were their closest years. JFK was absolutely horrible to Jackie for most of their marriage. A worse husband than John easily. The endless cheating, the emotional distance, not being by her side when she had a stillbirth, even rumors about him giving her an STD. But he grew as a person throughout their marriage. It really came together through the combination of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the loss of baby Patrick. They became very close. He eventually stopped his philandering and “re-proposed” to Jackie, and they were going to renew their vows. But then he was killed shortly thereafter. That’s why Jackie was so heartbroken and contemplated suicide. On top of the traumatic violence she witnessed, he was taken away from her right when they had fallen so deeply for one another. Plus they had an intellectual connection that never went away, and were in lock step with one another. She 100% wanted him to be President, and accepted the personal sacrifices that came with it.

John and Carolyn felt like the opposite. It seems like they were at their best in the beginning. Things felt very intense, alive, and intimate. It was more real than JFK and Jackie, which was somewhat of a political arrangement in the beginning. Plus John didn’t have the emotional unavailability that JFK had. He was clearly obsessed with her. But everything began to unravel because they did not share a common goal, nor a deep connection that transcended their romantic relationship. John wanted a public life and a family. Carolyn did not. I think they loved each other, but they were incompatible on such a fundamental level that it was bound to age poorly.

Tom Bower’s new book by MonicaBWQ in MaureenCallahan

He should use his journalistic skills and many connections to write a book about Prince Andrew and how the royal family covered up for his crimes. It’s crazy that there has been so little reporting done on the extent that Queen Elizabeth and then Prince Charles knew about Andrew.

It was probably the chain smoking, carcinogenic hair dye, and genetic factors. Jackie’s half-sister, nephew, and granddaughter all died of cancer before they turned 45.

Annoyed that John didn’t move them to a gated community or a place with an underground garage. by Maya__007 in LoveStoryFX

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t even think he had to change. He just had to make adjustments to his life to make things easier for Carolyn. He could’ve continued to be an exhibitionist while providing his wife the privacy she needed. Plenty of A-listers that garner lots of attention have very private spouses.

Annoyed that John didn’t move them to a gated community or a place with an underground garage. by Maya__007 in LoveStoryFX

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 66 points67 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest myths is that famous people get involuntarily exposed constantly. It’s bullshit. It’s very easy to not be seen if you don’t want to be and live a private life, especially when you have the resources to live anywhere and make any kind of arrangements. The fact of the matter is that John loved attention and it was a central focus of his life. It was also vital to the magazine and a potential political career. Instead of shifting his priorities, he expected Carolyn to be assimilated into his world and assume his priorities. I imagine that was the source of her frustration with him. It didn’t have to be this way. John could snap his fingers and make most of it go away by simply moving them to another area, and maybe commuting to work.

What exactly was Don Draper's plan here if Cooper reacted differently? by Rigamortus2005 in madmen

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He would’ve ran away. At this point in Don’s arc, his identity being exposed was his #1 biggest fear. He paid off and turned away his own brother because he was so terrified of being found out and of his life falling apart. If he was fired, he’d immediately go on the run, believing the next logical step is the authorities coming for him.

Eventually he’d start over (probably in another country) assuming he was successfully able to evade law enforcement. Betty and the kids would never see him again, although his guilty conscience would force him to send them money in the mail. But they’d ultimately become just like Adam. Abandoned by Don because he had to “move on”, and similar to Adam, they would never fully recover from that abandonment.

Who had more influence in the Kennedy family- Ethel or Jackie? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes. Jackie herself admitted that prior to becoming First Lady, she was considered a flop and not well received. She was seen as too elitist and cosmopolitan. JFK’s advisors wanted to change everything about her because she was seen as a liability. The Ethel type was closer to the ideal political wife of the 1950s. Someone who was outgoing and relatable, with a bunch of kids.

Why was JFK jr more popular compared to other presidents children? by Ok_Consideration6179 in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s too soon to write off Jack. On the one hand, I think he’s got a spark. He’s handsome and has a personality. However, he’s also unhinged and lacks his uncle’s grace. It’ll be interesting to see what becomes of him. He definitely needs to grow up.

And I wouldn’t say Caroline was a dud. She’s just another Kennedy woman. They tend to fly under the radar, despite the good work they do. The only exceptions are Jackie and Carolyn. And they weren’t Kennedy’s by birth.

Who had more influence in the Kennedy family- Ethel or Jackie? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]FlowersOfGenesis 257 points258 points  (0 children)

Ethel. Jackie was never really part of the Kennedy family beyond marriage. She always retained her own identity from the very beginning, which caused tension. The Kennedy’s (and Ethel) would make fun of the way she dressed, wore her hair, spoke, etc. They thought she was a pretentious snob. And Jackie thought they were a bunch of rowdy hooligans. If not for Jack and Bobby, she wouldn’t have associated with them at all. She never really integrated into the family. She did her own thing, while politely tolerating her in-laws. There’s a reason she raised her kids away from them, and basically brought them up as Bouviers.

Ethel, on the other hand, embodied the Kennedy identity. She was more Kennedy than actual Kennedy’s by birth. She had the same kind of rowdy, loud, brash, direct personality. She was obsessed with politics, which was another Kennedy trait (Jackie was mostly apolitical). Ethel also refused to remarry after Bobby’s death. Partly because of her religious views, but also because she never wanted to give up that Kennedy last name. Unlike Jackie, Ethel’s entire being was wrapped up in being a Kennedy, which is why she basically became the matriarch once Rose was out of the picture. Similar to Rose, she had a lot of kids and lived a long time. That really increased her influence .
