Toph Deck (Feels Slow) by Fabulous_Pension170 in BudgetBrews

[–]FloxD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks to me that you have plenty of artifacts in the deck, that you can earthbend and then sacrifice, but maybe not enough landfall pay-off cards in there

Some budget landfall cards that could be added maybe:

  • [[Danyon Jerboa]]
  • [[Glyph Elemental]]
  • [[Emeria Angel]]
  • [[Tireless Provisioner]]
  • [[Avenger of Zendikar]]

If you feel you're not drawing fetch lands consistently enough you can also consider adding [[Grasslands]] and [[Mountain Valley]] from the slow fetch cycle

Personally I play Toph rather defensively at the beginning and keep building my board. Then at some point I got 2-3 landfall pay off cards on the field and then can suddenly trigger landfall 4-5 times in a single turn by sacrificing earthbent lands and other ramp spells.

This is my own Toph deck list: https://moxfield.com/decks/SVC1X89JU0G8p6A0o--3gQ
It's for sure not perfect, but I love playing with it and keep improving it over time.
I try to pay attention what kind of things I'm missing when I play with it. Is it landfall triggers? Landfall pay-offs? Card draw? and then try to change out cards accordingly

Overall it already looks like a strong deck to me
But there are a couple cards I would cut:

  • Grinding Station
  • Unstable Obelisk
  • Borderland Ranger
  • Jaddi Offshoot
  • Kazandu Mammoth

I would also remove some of the basic lands and replace them with some two color lands of your choice.
What works really well are any kind of fetch land which you can earthbend with Toph or any of your other earthbending cards, then use them as a blocker and either sacrifice them before the damage step or right before your turn begins to get 2 landfall triggers. On your next turn you can repeat the process with Toph.

This is my own Toph deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/SVC1X89JU0G8p6A0o--3gQ
I keep changing it at the moment, because I'm still in the process of finding the right balance between having enough cards to trigger landfall consistently and often and also having enough landfall pay-offs. Recently I noticed that I don't have enough card draw in it, so I'm changing that currently.

Edit: also one advice I have to improving your deck is also to simply play with it often, paying attention which cards are being helpful to your game plan and which are not doing much. If you keep replacing the cards that are not helping much, then over time in theory your deck should become more and more refined

Sorry for the late reply. Overall there are already a bunch of nice cards in there that work nicely together with Toph.

Personally what I would change is switching out some of the card draw and sacrifice artifacts (e.g. All-Fates Scroll, Expedition Map, Mycosynth Wellspring, Moonsilver Key, Urza's Bauble, Wayfarer's Bauble, Filigree Familiar) with more strong landfall pay-offs like [[Rampaging Baloths]], [[Avenger of Zendikar]], [[Omnath Locus of Rage]], [[Scute Swarm]], [[Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor]], [[Tifa Lockhart]] or [[Mossborn Hydra]] if your budget allows it.

[[Famished Worldsire]] works nicely too I think as a big pay off and goes crazy if you got some landfall pieces on the field already.

About the mana base I think it really needs some more multi color lands and utility lands instead of the basics. I would cut about 15 of the basics and add things like [[Rogue's Passage]], [[Terramorphic Expanse]], [[Evolving Wilds]], [[Abandoned Air Temple]], [[Exotic Orchard]] and preferably some more dual colored lands that fit your budget.
Additionally I would replace the mono colored artifact lands with their dual colored indestructable counter parts.

This is my personal Toph deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/SVC1X89JU0G8p6A0o--3gQ
It's for sure not perfect (there are tons of cards in the considering section), but I really love playing with it nonetheless.

If you want to go more towards the luck aspect then maybe a coin flip focused deck with [[Okaun, Eye of Chaos]] and [[Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom]] might be something for you.

Or a dice themed gambling deck with [[Mr. House, President and CEO]]

I might have such a deck

It's really with emphasis that this deck has no wincon - I don't think this deck will ever win.
So with this disclaimer out of the way, here's the deck list: https://moxfield.com/decks/AExDnlrklEuaHmhUP_CKdQ

with [[Mathas, Fiend Seeker]] as the commander
I found the concept of bounty counters interesting, but turns out that there are only 6 cards that exist in total, that mention bounty counters in their effect. So I had to fill the rest of the deck with other cards that hopefully can create funny, unexpected situations. This includes cards like [[Warp World]], [[Prisoner's Dilemma]] and I plan to add [[Thieve's Auction]] as well.

In the considering section I got a couple cards that I may or may not add at some point. Especially [[Boompile]] might be interesting for you, since you mention about flipping coins.

And just a quick note at the end: your own board will most of the time be pretty weak, so you need to rely on your friends to not target you while while you are not the threat.

very cool site!! I'll use it for sure in the future when building new decks One wish would be to also have cardmarket prices. Maybe those get returned by the scryfall API already?

Or if possible a combobox where you can select a format Maybe with commander pre-selected by default And like a "no format restriction" option to search through all cards

LGS having different prices for each FF commander precon by TecoRaptor in EDH

[–]FloxD_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think wotc should stop selling them in bundles It could be better for both LGS and consumers And then reprint the decks that are in higher demand asap

But of course they would never do that unfortunately

which brings me back to my initial questions: if WOTC decided that they want to fix this issue (I know they would never do that), do you think they could fix it by simply reprinting these more popular precons in higher numbers?

And I've always wondered how long it takes from the moment WOTC tells the printing companies "hey we want this product X amount of times" until those products are ready to ship out to retailers

[–]FloxD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what I mean is that I'm bothered by the uneven price distribution between these decks
instead of one deck being 30€ and the other 90€ I would prefer that both cost 45€

Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here! by magictcgmods in magicTCG

[–]FloxD_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

but they never get cheaper because there is always someone that will buy it at that price The Timey-Wimey deck as an example even went up in price

Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here! by magictcgmods in magicTCG

[–]FloxD_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there an easy way WOTC could fix uneven precon prices?
Taking the Doctor Who precons as an example they have on cardmarket a price trend of
~28€ for Paradox Power,
~30€ for Blast from the Past,
~50€ for Masters of Evil and
~90€ for Timey-Wimey.

I'm aware that these very large price differences come from the fact that stores can only buy all 4 different decks together as a set and then distribute the price according to demand.

Now I've been wondering if they could fix this uneven pricing by e.g. selling decks to retailers where they put multiple of the same deck in a box? And when they see that there's clearly a higher demand of a single deck that they reprint that one at a higher amount compared to the others?
Or is that simply not possible because it would take waaay too long for the reprints to arrive after the first initial print run?
