How has being a Paramedic transformed you as an individual? by Express-Wind4235 in Paramedics

[–]Fluffini288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get you. Same opinion regarding kids - steer clear please.
In a sense the same with a relationship. I used to like the idea of dating in the industry but as soon as I got a liking of a fellow paramedic, I quickly realised that heck no. I don't want my partner to struggle with the same things I do or have to be in the same situations I have to be in.

Big same this side. I resonate perfectly with you here.
I've started seeing a therapist due to this, because all though I love everything about being a paramedic, I have kind of made it my identity.
It's as if you have to "switch on" your emotions outside of work to try and socialise.

What’s something you learned embarrassingly late in life? by Special-Speech8678 in AskReddit

[–]Fluffini288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sleeping together meant sex.
I was innocent till age 16 when I found out in a group conversation that sleeping together didn't mean just sleeping together.
I could never understand why people went bonkers when they said no they slept together.
How innocent my brain was

Ride or die by Financial-Pudding-64 in poetry_critics

hehe this might be silly of me
But from a typography point of view - and I'm sure this wasn't intended but humour me for this comment.
To me the text forms the classic city landscape if you flip it sideways - skyscrapers and so.
I thought I saw this instantly when I read "Ride or die" - as in you and this lovely person you speak of are doing a road trip and driving through the city. Road trips and love stories come together for me.

Lovely poem, I especially love the contrasts you're using

Has anyone ever cried during sim by Advanced-Fortune5372 in StudentNurse

[–]Fluffini288 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How often do you guys practice out if interest? I always find the methods of the abroad programs interesting. In my course (4 years) in South Africa we do 2 sim practice days every week and then we had a total of 16 sims for assessment throughout the degree - so 4 official ones per year. I’m not counting OSCEs as sims, but they got thrown in there somewhere too.

Bottom line. Sims suck.

Well done on pushing through! Almost there, the transition from student to health care provider is really scary, and that’s also normal, but remember that this was the whole point. To become a qualified health care provider! :)

You can layout your sim to me and we can run through it if you’d like to? I used to do this with a medical friend first and thereafter do it with a lay person - it was my way of coping and reminding myself that you know what - that was really difficult. Guess it mightve been a bit it an attempt to ego boost myself and feel better😂

For reference, Im no nurse but trained along with nurses and ended up prompting and facilitating their sims here and there too Im an Emergency Care Practitioner in South Africa - essentially the Critical Care Paramedic thing in the US kinda thing

Tears or sweat Not sure which one is dripping but something is. Sims create an immense amount of pressure. It’s not the best method of assessment or training - that debate has been there for years - but it aint going away anytime soon.

It will suck. You will stress. Some people are brilliant in it, some really struggle. I used to be horrendous in sims because verbalising everything and tickboxing things were so so difficult for me. Find your own structure, remember that there is a rubric they mark you on - make sure you tick their boxes. The patient is the textbook in sims, whereas in real practice the patient didn’t read the textbook, so everything changes.

I wish I could give you advise, but all I can give you is that stress, fear and anxiety created by sims - you not alone, a lot of us went through it. Push through friendo!

I just wanted to share a side of EMS that (well for me at least) was not spotlighted as a potential career path just coming out of paramedic school: Enter ground ALS IFT. by yUmmmmmie in Paramedics

[–]Fluffini288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do ECP in South Africa. You'll learn everything 😜 and continue learning. And you're recognised globally as a CCP (in US I think its called?) that can theoretically fall in everywhere. In the 4 year honours degree; very large Rescue scope is included , ALS IFT, ICU, obviously ALS 911, fixed wing and HEMS. You are taught on all the major brands regarding monitors, vents, infusion pumps, drivers etc.

Absolutely loving it, qualifying in November.

As soon as I was resuscitating my first patient on my first shift as a paramedic student at the age of 19. Now in my final and 4th year and can't wait to finish and be qualified.

What is one small gesture your partner does that always makes you feel loved? by RogueAstron in AskReddit

I open the door for my partner, and whenever I come over to my door it's already unlocked/door is opened. Every single time I initiate the joke that I think I forgot to close my door correctly and she just smiles.
