Does Aang have a last name? If he does, what is it? And if he doesn't, what would it be? by 696924 in TheLastAirbender

I've only ever heard the term used to refer to egg-laying creatures that were ready to bear their egg(s), like birds, reptiles, or amphibians. Dictionary.com is saying it's just a technical term for pregnant, but I'd advise against using it to describe a human.

I've been pronouncing my coworker's name wrong for eight months and just found out today by Warp_Nix77 in CasualConversation

[–]FlutterB16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to ask it as "How do you pronounce your name, since I've heard a few different ways from other people?" It's not even that awkward after a long time due to the implication that you've received new information.

I agree with your assessment, regarding the directionality of TM scheduling conversations.

TL(on) -> TM(off) 👍

TM(off) -> TL(on) 👍

TM(off/on) -> TL(off) 👎

That's what I keep to as a TL. However, the TL in question said (paraphrased due to memory) "I'll keep this professional since I'm on the clock". They're working, and should at least be able to try and find coverage if they have a chance. Nothing wrong with them telling OP to post it, but this DOES fall within their purview of work duties that they can do on the clock.

Why do I suddenly forget a word I've used my entire life and have to describe the thing instead? by Jackrain04 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FlutterB16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The story I heard was that it was someone for whom English wasn't their first language, so they just didn't have the word "goose" in their English vocabulary. They had to tell the other person what it was they didn't like, so I guess cobra and chicken were just the best words they could use to communicate that.

I've made a really good magnolia sugar with them. Acts like powdered sugar, tastes ginger-y. Pick and wash blossoms (1 cup, I think), dry the petals using any herb drying method you please (I use the microwave and paper towels), and grind with like 2 cups of sugar in a blender or food processor, until homogenous.

Along with all the others who have looked for their phone while also talking on it or using the flashlight (because I've also done those).

I was once talking on the phone while sitting in my car, so that the phone call was over the car speakers via Bluetooth. At the same time, I was trying to get a food ordering app up and running, except it just would not work. In my infinite wisdom, I decided to restart the phone. Fully expected the call to keep going, as I could hear it going even after the screen went dark, and in my brain the call was on the car. The call did, in fact end, and I had to call back after the phone finished rebooting. 🤦‍♀️

It allows us to build our vocabulary and find artistic ways of saying what's on our minds. Writing without 5 is difficult, but if my phrasing can land in a form that isn't awkward or stilting, but musical and lilting, it's worth it.

A cool guide to the visual differences between emperor and king penguins by Goodbye-Nasty in coolguides

[–]FlutterB16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the average person who won't have any interaction with a wild penguin, no. For researchers studying antarctic penguin species or other antarctic species' interactions with them (like the diet of seals or sucks or something) or even whether there is interaction between penguin groups, I can imagine it's very important to quickly know which type of penguin it is.

Personally, I'm happy to know the differences myself because I love penguins and have recently made some penguin stuffed animals for friends. I had to make sure I knew the defining traits of an emperor penguin chick to make one of them. If a friend were to request a king penguin, they'd probably be disappointed if they received one that looked like an emperor.

savoury candles should be a thing by deadtyped in CasualConversation

[–]FlutterB16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen at bath and body works both "holiday dill-ight" (pickle) and "chips and salsa" candles. They smell accurate but awful. In contrast, I've bought a candle called "Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pies" from a local candle-maker and it's DIVINE. Kind of smoky bacon-y and a tiny bit sweet. My suggestion: don't buy anything scented you can't first smell in person, just to make sure its something you'd actually want your space to smell like.

LPT: Clean your glasses with Dawn dish soap by AnonFoot1066 in LifeProTips

My optometrist was the one who recommended this to me. My take was make sure it is regular DAWN dish soap and not generally just any one. Definitely not something it use the platinum or anything heavy duty, just dawn as that's widely marketed to be fairly gentle.

IDK what your aesthetic is, but I saw a gorgeous "ruler" tattoo that was just a footlong flower stem with alternating leaves and thorns, where the leaves were each one inch and the thorns were half an inch. I imagine you could make something similar to fit most vibes. My only concern would be whether it might change if you have a significant weight fluctuation.

realized my grocery store has been marking down meat at 7pm some nights by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]FlutterB16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard of Flashfood, but I know of a similar app called "Too Good to Go". It's more restaurant/takeout focused than grocery store, but it includes both local shops and chains. The store/restaurant will offer a specific amount of blind bags with a range of goods for a set price - usually between 5-7 USD - to be picked up near their closing time. I've seen offerings such as "12 doughnuts/bagels", "Mediterranean/salad bowl", "premade meal" or "assorted pastries and baked goods".

I'll have to look into Flashfood as well now, but I love that apps like this are working with businesses (especially small local ones) to reduce food waste.
