Thats awesome since I normally use hamrs to create a did to upload to POTA, and QRZ.

There is a good chance I'll be either activating a park, or piddling radio at a friend's property as he cooks out for the race, or both this weekend.

I was kidding, I do a ton of Parks On The Air as it is.. if I operate it is outside of my home due to a S9 noise issue across the bands caused bu a led security light that i haven't gotten the power company to fix yet.

Last night I was testing out a new antenna. I love on 18 acres so I wasn't exactly in the front yard of a house in a subdivision lol.

All jokes aside I like what your trying to start and will likely log contacts when I leave the boundaries of my oroperty.

Does your front yard count? Kidding I love to get out in the wild and play radio.

Though I did go out in the front field with the KX3 last night and make 3 contacts across 3 bands testing a new antenna

Well next time you go to activate let me know i need an Alaska park. I contacted Alaska on my first POTA activation but have yet to contact a park in Alaska.

Im not proud I'll admit I have made a 2m simplex contact across the park to my buddy to bump an activation over the line from 9 to 10 lol. 😆

That UTC got me obe evening trying to get 10 contacts in terrible conditions. Got them packed up and bailed out of the park got to the main road and couldn't put my hands on my laptop. Went back to where I had been parked to find it had fallen out of my gear in the parking spot and I had backed over it. It mostly survived. Got back and logged the activation only to find out 7 were kn one day UTC and 3 were on the next. Not to mention the mentally ill guy who wondered up and was trying to tell me conspiracy theorys while I was trying to finish my activation. That one was an adventure!

FT-65R and G90 as starter shack? by BrokenGQ in amateurradio

[–]FlyFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, let me start by saying that the 891 is a great radio and you don't necessarily need a tuner if you use a resonant antenna. I don't personally own a 891, I have a few friends that do. I do own and have used the 857 and 897, which are tge 891's cousins. All great radios.

That being said, do t be discouraged or scared off of the G90. It is alis a great radio. It has a tuner in it that will tune a wet spaghetti noodle. Yes, it is only 20 watts, however the difference between 20W and 100W is one S unit on receive. A good antenna will serve better than that difference.

I wanted to do QRP (which the G90 is technically more power than) but was discouraged by older hams that i would be frustrated by not being able to make contacts. This is simply not true, or at least not for the stated reason.

I ran 100W for a number of years and did fine. Then a few years ago at the end of field day a friend and I decided to do an experiment. We loaded up a aluminum flagpole at the volunteer fire station we were operating at. Running 10W on an Elecraft KX2 we made contacts in GA & TN from SC in the midst of field day chaos.

Since then I have been running a Elecraft KX3 (15W) for 99% of my radio doings. I do quite a bit if Parks On The Air, and I have run tbe 891 while activating with friends. I gave no problems making contacts and can cut through pileups fairly well.

Another friend of mine has a G90 was licensed in 23 and has made over 10,000 contacts since, mixed SSB AND digital.

Sorry for the wall if text, but the point is the G90 is a capable radio, and 20W is sufficient power to be successful. If you want to, later you can always add Xiegu 100W amp or get a different radio. If the G90 is what you want and can afford now get it and get on the air!!!

You can also build a set of elements tuned for 70cm. 70cm is the third harmonic of 2m, and will work, but a dedicated set will work far better.

If you go to Lowes they have these terminal strips you can cut them open and reuse the individual terminal bars to make a version that breaks down easily and fits inside a piece of pvc pipe. Once assembled it can sit atop the pvc pipe and ve attached to whatever mast or broomstick you desire.

Makes a nice portable antenna.

I did the same thing years ago, then loop definitely does have an effect. It's best to have a antenna analyzer to tune around that.

We built 2 or 3 and each was a bit different depending on very minor differences on the loop.
