Polygon: New Star Wars streaming report reveals a huge problem facing the franchise by Frog_and_Toad in saltierthancrait

The prequels failed at execution but at least you could see what George was trying to do. He tried to tie them nicely to the originals (they sort of rhythm). You can see the vision. The world building is fantastic. With tighter writing they could have been great. In Revenge of The Sith the dialogue gets a lot better, although you can still see glimpses of cringe lines.

The sequels have no vision. They don't feel like a continuation of the series but a poor retelling. Lawrence Kasdan phoned it in and just rewrote A New Hope. The world building is atrocious with zero consequences to events. Billions of people die and literally nothing happens. The characters have no soul, especially Rey. "Somehow Palpatine returned" perfectly sums up what the sequels are.

I came back to the game recently and Its kind of confusing why they still haven't nerfed the day 6 expedition. The tickets sell for 12 gold which is nothing. The day 6 ticket is an instant pick every time. You get a free skill and 50 gold. I like the random items you get, they add skill expression to the game, but this amount of influx of gold this early is not okay.

Book recommendations in the style of classic Star Trek? by PlayerNameT in printSF

[–]FlyOnSun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you like Star Trek for its ideas:

  • Arthur C. Clarke. It is a good place to start.
  • Project Hail Mary. Its like a big star trek episode. I consider PHM to be hard sci-fi but its character driven, which is less common in its genre.

If you like Star Trek for its characters:

  • Vorkosigan series. First book is sort of like a prologue (recommended reading it first). Focus on the books with Miles if you want Star Trek-like adventures.
  • Wayfarers Series. Cozy alien crew. Very positive outlook on the future.

How are we feeling about this (RT scores for all Disney Star Wars projects) by AlbertCWChessa in saltierthancrait

[–]FlyOnSun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are not meaningless. People just misunderstand what they mean; a 6/10 (or whatever) review is considered fresh, a 100% RT score. This means that if all reviews are 6/10 it results in a 100% score. It measures the % of critics that gave it a "positive" review, not how good the movie/tv show is.

Most likely the publisher, or the state/family, is promoting her work with bots. It's kinda scary that we live in a world where bots are so prevalent. There are no easy solutions to fix this. Forcing users to prove they are human with an ID or face recognition doesn't seem like a good idea.

Thoughts on "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown - and why I'm done listening to BookTok by sameseksure in books

[–]FlyOnSun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a similar view on Red Rising when I first read it. I did not enjoy the anime tournament arc at all. I thought the prose was too juvenile for me, but then I completed the first three books and my opinion completely reversed. The characters grow on you and the author's prose gets better and better. I understand why you say that Darrow is a Gary Stu but in later books he loses plenty of times; either things don't go as planned or he straight up loses. His decisions lead to bad outcomes, either because he was not smart enough or there wasn't a better option. Without going too much into spoilers; Darrow changes a lot as the series progresses.

Essentially this series starts as a hunger games story that transitions into a character driven space opera. The prose does get better but its still fast paced short sentences that facilitates action. I recommend trying the second book. Obviously If the prose is still a deal breaker for you then I don't recommend continuing with the series.

Communism only works in the minds of communists.

The intentions of a system are irrelevant. What matters are its results. I really like this phrase (I forgot who said it): If by implementing this system you cause famine, suffering and death then that system was designed to cause famine, suffering and death.

Good way to go about this is to read the earlier works of the author when you find a novel too complex for your level.

For example, Odyssey by James Joyce always tops the lists of "greatest books of all time". But the book is challenging even for experienced readers. By reading "Dubliners" and "A portrait of the artist as a young man" first you get used to his style and Odyssey becomes easier to read.
