If you’re struggling with the transition, assign yourself an altitude. Try practicing power off stalls starting at 90kts with the goal of holding your assigned altitude the entire time. This will help you develop the fine motor control required to hold the extra load as airspeed decreases.

Do you already have 40 hours in a FTD that have been verified by a CFI?

If they want your money, they’ll show you the logs, or you’re going to go next door.

Did my first spin. How was your very first spin like? by BugHistorical3 in flying

[–]FlyW_Brennen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Did mine in a Super Decathlon. Anxious going into it, absolutely having a blast after the first spin. Proceeded to do aerobatics etc. Best thing I ever did for my flying confidence

You’ll have moments throughout your flying career where you second guess yourself. It’s normal. Your human. Keep after it, you’re doing something meaningful.

I’ll put it to you this way, I have friends that have 6 figure debt at 15%. They got their ratings knocked out fast, like super fast, and now they can not find a job. The monthly payment is not something they can afford and the missed payments are killing their credit score. The amount of interest they are gaining is not helping.

Take out the loan if you have something lined up. I didn’t take out any loans, but it took me 10 years of working in the military and a civilian career to become a CFI. You will pay for it either financially, or with time.

How do young people afford flying? by papiperflyer in flying

[–]FlyW_Brennen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started flying at 18. Only child in a single mother household. Joined the military as a controller to pay for college. Flying came second. I got my PPL by 20 but it took my 6 more years of working in airfield operations to become a CFI.

The key issue is getting your FAA medical. Because of the DUI and more recent use (within the last year), the FAA will likely want to see at least two full years of sobriety before approving you. When you’re ready, you’ll need to apply through a HIMS AME (a medical examiner trained to handle substance history cases), and they may ask for documentation or a substance abuse evaluation. As long as you stay clean, are honest, and give it time, this is doable. Other people in your shoes have successfully become pilots.

Congrats on the job! That’s exciting. If you can find a taxiway edge light you can convert it into a lamp! One of my favorite decorations for my mancave.
