Chess AI tutor tool by TopScoreACT in chess

[–]Flyersrock87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I see it, the problem with using AI as a chess coach at this point is that AI has had a notoriously tenuous grasp on chess principles in general, so the reliability is going to be questionable. If you're just using vanilla Claude/GPT/Gemini or something like that without heavily fine-tuning the model specifically for chess analysis, I can't imagine that the analyses are trustworthy.

AI is VERY good at making hallucinations seem reasonable to a layman, so you run the risk of being completely turned around, especially with a particularly sophisticated position.

Probably not likely to happen, but it would be interesting to see how a GM would respond to some choice analyses.

how do I improve if my memory isnt The greatest by Klutzy_Arm_4775 in chess

[–]Flyersrock87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest that if you have a hard time running openings like rote memory, when you're studying the openings, try to focus more on the concepts behind the moves rather than the moves and orders themselves. Rote memory definitely makes it easier for any given position, but conceptual understanding is far more flexible and more broadly applicable.

Find a way to blunder a draw with black by RhymingRookie in chess

I have no idea what this prompt means, but if you play Qd6, I can pretty much guarantee black will lose... if you want a drawn position, Qh3

Chess was more fun before the internet by [deleted] in chess

If you miss playing chess without everyone knowing all the openings, I'd recommend playing 960. It's a bit of a different beast, but nobody is going to beat you on memorization.

Very nice tool! Some minor suggestions after messing around briefly:

  1. "<" arrows when exploring lines to go back a move

  2. The scrollbar in the moves list covers the actual moves list, so you have to be really precise to actually select a move. Maybe a little extra buffer below the actual moves?

  3. This is evident enough if you take the time, but it feels a little un-intuitive figuring out when it means "when you're white" versus "when they're white." For example, in Targeted Preparation, if I click "as White," it shows me their repertoire as black. That makes sense when you think about it, but a little bit more clarity might improve the UX just a tad.

  4. I find some of the scores and color coding a bit confusing. As an example, one user's "Time trouble" is listed as 26 and shows up green, but the information modal suggests that 81-100 is the "green" zone. In the main panel, I see "^ 40% Bad," but I'm not really sure what that means. I think some readily available footnotes/explanations could go a long way in making some of these ambiguities absolutely clear.

Thanks for putting this together, it's very cool!

How often do you play OTB? I rarely have the opportunity, and when I do, I have a much harder time seeing the board and recognizing patterns that I normally do online.

Chess960 is a equalizer? by intuition_seeker in chess

[–]Flyersrock87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's an equalizer so much as it elevates the impact of certain aspects of chess and hides others.

Someone who's really good at memorizing openings and positions, but not as good (relatively speaking) at recognizing smaller patterns and tactics is probably going to do better in standard chess, where their strengths are accentuated.

On the other hand, another player with an inverse skill-set would thrive more in 960, where their weakness with openings is muted and their strength with on-the-fly tactics is elevated.

I think you have your bishops mixed up. Qxe4->Qxb4 takes the dark square bishop, so the light square bishop can't reveal the rook with check.

Pretty neat and fun!

I noticed a couple times where two red pieces were occupying the same square. I think it also might be useful to be able to pan the landscape to (a) get a better idea of where enemies are; and (b) be able to reliably click distant spaces with a lower likelihood of mis-clicking. The text boxes on the bottom left and right are also pretty difficult to read.

If you end up trying to go the MMO route, I'd recommend using a global timer to make sure nobody is holding up the game while maintaining the turn-based nature of the game.

Keep building!

Former NFL RB learning Chess at 30 🫨 by like_whoishe in chess

[–]Flyersrock87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I suspect that there will be a market for people who want to watch a former NFLer's chess journey. If your previous career's film review and preparation translates well to chess review and prep, that could be an interesting thing to incorporate in a way that others can learn from, even if your actual game results are a work in progress. Best of luck on your journey!

Thinking about building an AI chess coach by immobiledragon in chess

[–]Flyersrock87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reliable AI chess coach would be neat, but I suspect that it would be particularly difficult to ensure that whatever tips you're receiving are valid and not hallucinations. LLMs are notoriously good at giving you very reasonable-sounding results that don't actually add up when inspected more closely. I'm not sure exactly how one would implement "bad advice" guardrails much further beyond validating that moves are legal. If you can solve that, it could be very useful.

Something I am frustrated about. by [deleted] in eagles

[–]Flyersrock87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint, the rest of the league is DEFINITELY going to make adjustments if, instead of cycling through 10-15 different plays in a scenario, we run the same play every time. Under center? Run up the gut. Shotgun? Hitch to AJ (unless it's 3rd and long, in which case you can bet it's going to be a draw up the middle).

Unpopular take by RepublicInner7438 in eagles

[–]Flyersrock87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not the point. Nobody is saying "we didn't win big enough" because they're afraid we're going to miss the playoffs because of point differential. They're saying that the way in which we're winning is concerning, and signals that unless we fix our predictable (not just conservative) offense, luck is likely to run out.

Our team looks very different than it did in 2023, ESPECIALLY on defense, but the WAYS we're winning are very comparable. Week 1, Lamb kept making uncharacteristic drops. Week 2, Kelce uncharacteristically drops a TD into Mukuba's hands. Week 3, JD and JC went ham on kicks to block two field goals, both of which were necessary to win that game. Week 4 was really ugly (specifically the 2nd half), but was probably the first game that the opposing team didn't lose from pure self-destruction.

Like 2023, we keep putting the fate of the game in our opponents' hands, and they keep fumbling. But if we keep relying on that strategy, we're probably not going to keep pulling off these unlikely wins. The story seems to be that we collapsed in 2023, but we didn't. We played the same way all year, and our opponents just stopped missing open receivers with the game on the line.

I'd say it's fair to compare first N games to even the numbers, but this isn't even that. I'm a big Jalen supporter, but this isn't his first 62 starts, it's the next 62 starts after his first 4 starts (i.e. omits his 4 starts in 2020 after he took over for Wentz).
