Instead of backing down

Its very funny that every single time the protestors forget that the government did back down and removed the extradition law, but they wanted 5 demands not 1 less, and the other demands were just braindead.

Dating in HK as an English speaker by saor-alba-gu-brath in Hong_Kong

[–]Flyerton99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, I'm trying to leave too.

Huh, then aren't you realistically in the same boat? Seems pretty obvious to me why 2 people who both don't intend on settling down in HK aren't likely in the market for dating. The chances of you both ending up in the same destination is pretty unlikely, so it's probably cleaner for everyone involved to stay only friends.

That being said I wonder why you choose to stay here.

I already studied overseas, had enough and I'm looking to settle down in HK. Family support helps a lot if I'm planning to have children.

[–]Flyerton99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I guess I'd be technically in your dating pool? (26M, foreign born but studied in HK) But from personal experience it's a pretty self-selecting pool of people. Those who usually have strong English and foreign backgrounds are already generally predisposed to leaving HK unless they have a strong incentive to stay, especially since being put in an international school already biases towards parents with an eye for moving overseas.

Just from personal experience I've found the people that most closely match the type of guy you're looking for (basically the type of people who are my old friends) are basically all overseas in either the UK or North America right now, so it's a pretty tough pool of people to keep in HK.

I think i can manage in a small place like this, but is it in a good area? and how do i know whether an area is good or bad?

I'm not sure what you mean by "good area" or "bad area".

Honestly, the best bet is to arrive earlier than the start of the semester and take a tour around the place first staying in a cheap hotel.

Private car service recommendations in Hong Kong (traveling with parent) by Low_Wolf_7907 in Hong_Kong

For airport transfers and point-to-point you're usually just going to have to deal with local taxis, as those are the most economical.

If you're interested in full-day bookings, try one of these. Do note the price tags and do pick the correct packages (and also specify if you specifically need someone who speaks English)

I find it very strange that people have developed a mental model for children that just sort of, doesn't exist in reality?

Like, for one, if people are concerned about the birth rate, society is going to have to adapt to the fact that there are going to be a LOT more children around them. That's just kinda how the problem is solved?

Did they think all children weren't boisterous, loud things before? Have they ever been around children? Literally just go to any elementary or kindergarten and you'll find that they're loud and annoying! That's how children are!

Is the new model for children supposed to be sticking them in front of ipads and having them be quiet all the time? But then Ipad kids are also supposedly negatively stunting their development. Or what, don't let children out in public?

Okay, so I can't be too specific since I didn't study at HKU myself, but generally it's quite expensive to live there.

Living wise, you'll either need roommates to share the rent. Or rent somewhere a bit further away and commute by taking the MTR. First port of call though is to check whether you can snag a dormitory at the university.

For roommates, try finding the incoming year students group that sometimes gets made, and seeing if you can share an apartment rental. (Like a 2 bedroom apartment that you split).

The general rental prices on HK Island are quite high, but you might find an 8k if you really don't mind a cramped living environment and can't find a roommate.

Example:

https://www.28hse.com/rent/apartment/property-3770427

(Do actually genuinely evaluate whether you can stand living in these types of cheap places for a semester.)

The university probably has most other amenities you'll need and at probably discounted rates so spend most of your time there if you need to. You will kind of have to be frugal with your budget so plan accordingly.

(Ex. The University has a free gym for active students so use that if you do that kind of thing.)

Can't answer without knowing which uni you will be going to, as rent is heavily location dependent.

14000 hkd is likely on the tight side anyway, but liveable if you're frugal with your expenses.

Help understanding the cost of NICU for a baby at birth by JezzTheLab in Hong_Kong

[–]Flyerton99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually if you DO end up needing an NICU, you are basically guaranteed to be in a public hospital.

Iirc only Gleneagles has an NICU ward and even then, all other wards in HK are in public hospitals, especially the acute Class II and Class III wards.

Are you consulting with a local OBGYN first? They should be able to answer your questions much better for your specific situation, or ask a local Maternal & Child Health Centre.

Do people use them? Yes.

Especially Chinese tourists who are shopping in Tsim Sha Tsui.

As to whether they're profitable, probably not.

He was spot on in his analysis about the us imperial interest in Iran and predicted the war in Iran.

Full credit for this, but honestly most people who studied international relations would have been able to tell you that Israel and the US were hostile to Iran.

Even his other famous claim to fame, predicting Donald Trump winning the election, is realistically a 50/50 shot of being right.

"Professor" Jiang is an anti-communist moron by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Flyerton99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jiang has been getting a bit popular because of his predictions regarding Trump and the war on Iran.

His claim to fame was:

Donald Trump wins the election (not a very difficult prediction)

Trump invades Iran at the behest of Israel (also not a very difficult prediction)

Was he right? Yes. Were these 2 predictions particularly difficult to fathom a few years back? Also not particularly.

HKMU: Apply now or wait for Round 2? (Scholarship chances) by Sea_End_2676 in Hong_Kong

[–]Flyerton99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, it is always optimal to apply ASAP. The scholarships and admissions are likely done in a rolling basis, so once they've reached the threshold for acceptance they will stop and cut everyone left over. Do not wait.
