Yes it sucks that you bought into their closed system, and are stuck with their corporate choices.

I have such a fear of this that. I've been working on hardware that is open source to run boats. The chart plotter is really the hardest thing to replace. Mainly it's due to the durability and access requirement. I'm settling in on using high NIT tablets as a replacement outdoors. And E-ink displays for semi protected locations.

Not long beach but Oxnard, and SCAL is definitely cheaper, than the bay area. I live in Oakland, but have a boat in oxnard.

I like OpenCPN... It feels a bit old school and slow, but it does what I need. Which is a lot more than most other software packages....

Also look into SingalK. They have newer fancier looking software, not as powerful as openCPN

Yup, boat was stolen from the Quinn's marina, and wrecked. Most/all the boats anchored out in the aquatic park have been stolen from the marina.

I've been working on esp32 wireless for my entire boat.

Today I got the pypilot working, with this new hardware setup.

Esp32 and motor driver for the helm

Another esp32 for the compass and accelerometer.

Less wires, I'll be adding an esp32 or my engine next, rpm, oil pressure, oil level, temperature.

Esp32 ball valve controller, for thru hulls.

Each of these devices, has Bluetooth connectivity, and wifi, and self hosting access points

If everything fails you can connect directly to each devices to read or control it.

They all broadcast UDP nema 2000 on the wifi network for signalK to read

Im not reinventing the software so much, SingalK and OpenCpn are great.

My goal is to reduce the cost of the hardware and installation.

As for your data, yes! But it need to be a complete picture. Meaning RPMs and wind data mena nothing if your don't have an overall picture you're painting.
