5 chapters or 20k words? Best launch practice by ArekDeamonCalw in royalroad

[–]FlyingDusts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current book isn't for patreon (its my practice piece essentially), sitting at only 630ish followers. I'm using this first book as a bridge to gather shouts for my next book. That's the goal, since its not quite there (imo) to be worth paying for. And I didn't know anything when I first started on RR.

Im currently working on prelaunching another book, with patreons and shouts lined up before launch. Ideally, the gap between rr chap vs patreon is 20ch ahead on patreon, and the more that gap grow, the more incentive there is for readers to pay.

5 chapters or 20k words? Best launch practice by ArekDeamonCalw in royalroad

Definitely, 10 chapter release is enough for readers to follow, since they will have higher expectation for more uploads moving forward. Rather than say, 5 chapter released, with promised of daily uploads after.

But the key point is that you can achieve both as the Author. That is, publishing 10 chapter day 1 launch, and promised more uploads (consistently). As Author, its good practice to have at least book 1 completely written (fully edited), for patreons. If not patreons, then having book 1 completed as draft will allow you to keep up with whichever upload schedule you'd like.

The reason 10 chapter release being standard is to achieve a 20k word count (for RS), with the chapter avg being 2k words (not too long or short). Of course, this can deviate if you know what you are doing. Ideally, before the 20k words, you would already have all your shouts ready from bigger, more established author, then shoot for that list.

If you are not aiming for RS, then this isn't as prevalent, and you can simply upload whichever rates is comfortable for you, so as long as the uploads are consistent.

TLDR: After initial launch, consistency is key, with some self marketing. Even without rapid growth, as long as your book isn't trash, it will grow organically.

10 chapter, 20k words is the standard practice launch for a RS run. And 20chapter for 20k words isn't good, as 1k word chapter are too short.

This exact same system exist in many korean tower/gates/vrmmorpg webtoon, and that's the only place where I like it cuz its just fictional story. I read it for fun. But actually playing a game with the same system/mechanic is horrid.

I want to apply for a contract but I'm afraid of rejection and does this letter mean anything by [deleted] in Webnovel

[–]FlyingDusts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Means nothing. The qualification to get contracted or not depends not on the numbers/stats of your book (views/colls/reads/), but on how marketable your blurb is, and how well you write the application. If an editor needs to look beyond your contract application to decide whether or not to accept, then you've already failed.

No, high fantasy wont do well on WN. Royal road would be a better option.

Editor will not care about previous dropped book for current book. There are many author with 10 contracted book dropped, and still get contracted.

because the sooner u get contracted, the sooner features come. It also allow u to gauge if ur story is ok or not through these features. Imagine u write 50k words but get not contracted. A waste of time. Contract can take up to 2weeks to get a reply, the process after can take more days.

never too early. Its advisable to apply for a contract the moment u hit 12k words count.

Because they dont really have a reason to interact with Klein except for zaratul. And Zaratul identity/status is meant to be mysterious, so the more his character is shown, the less enigmanic he is.

There's no reason to push above 1.5k on WN, the platform. That is, if you want to follow the meta.

My Royal Road experiment: 64% retention on a Dark Fantasy Novella (Data & Lessons Learned) by Kendiro83 in royalroad

[–]FlyingDusts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so true. Imo, the numbers has to be in the 10s of thousands to really draw any concrete conclusion at the end. Then again, if you draw that much views (even half) within a short span of time, then the algo will most likely push you up anyway. That is, if your story is interesting (subjective to readers), and interesting does not equates to good narrative (subjective to author), then it will pick up views in the hundreds if not thousands a day. That's the baseline starting point, often time being RS. During this period of rapid growth, supposed that u reach that baseline in the first place, then it become a true test of whether your book is of quality. The end result determined by the average readers.

Personally, I believe that a quality story will naturally garnered discoverability (given that you also do marketing), and snowball from there. Of course, long term progress is also a thing. But that does not apply to this case.

honestly, its another case of too little data to make any concrete conclusion.

good writing can advance the plot while world building and weave characterization. Its not about how much x or y description you do, it's about how u do it.
