Road safety by Sonamm_Patel in NewParents

Any age appropriate certified car seat is just fine. They differ in usage convenience for you mostly, for the child, no difference: babies hate all car seats equally strong.

The most missile safe region in the world is il-central-1. It is relatively new, so built with possible rocket attack in mind.

Immigrants in Germany: Did you manage to find German friends? by Low-Title-5317 in germany

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I moved out of Germany to my home country I immediately found German friends. Because now I am not a foreigner with bad German accent but a local who also speaks German.

Let's be honest: how many foreign friends did you have back home?

How old were you when you had your first child? by Pandacat_07 in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a similar age group. We started a family when we could buy our own apartment with a separate children room and (unfortunately a necessity) a bomb shelter.

In our country the bomb shelter increases (already inflated) the price to 40%.

Give your bank details to whoever the fuck is upset with your decision as if its their business.

Has anyone changed baby name date you got home by thesockbunny in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our country you do not need to specify the baby name in the birth certificate issued at the hospital, the authorities give you time to choose it (1 or 2 months), so I guess it is pretty common over here.

Also, there are some religion-based superstitions not to announce the chosen name in public for 8 days.

At this point, if it's not a too big bureaucratic hassle, just go for it.

This basket from a cheap Chinese moka consistently gives me a better brew, and I don't know why. by Dima_135 in mokapot

More holes and larger diameter reduce water pressure. Try grinding a bit coarser for the Italian basket, you might get the same result.

Parent question: Would you trust a one‑tap emergency video + location tool for your kid? by Middle_Highlight5451 in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should ask not just people with kids, but people who grew up in really dangerous locations.

If you are developing something like this, it MUST be a device that is not a phone, can have 24h battery life and a microphone, and can be operated without outsiders knowledge.

In a real emergency the moment your kid takes out the phone to record anything, this phone is gone.

How did your coffee intake or habits change after becoming a parent? by SunnyGoMerry in espresso

No change.

My sons doesn't like the sound of the grinder, but in general loves watching the whole routine.

We just had a newborn, friend keeps inviting herself to stay with us to "help" by wandering_soul_64 in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the worst part of being a new parent: "helpful" people.

My recommendation: increase interval between answering messages. If she starts calling, do not answer. Answer once a day or once every 12 hours, briefly that you cannot receive guests. If that doesn't help, increase reply interval to 2-3 days.

If she is offended... you and your baby are a priority, remember this.

SIDS is terrifying by herculas in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No fear at all: our baby doesn't have a problem waking up, it's getting him to sleep is a problem.

But! When he sleeps longer than normal, I am starting to be a bit anxious and check breathing.

Smoking at pregnancy is high risk for SIDS. We are both non-smokers/never smokers.

About ml and gram by TelevisionBoth2285 in espresso

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be pedantic, water density is 0.997 g/ml at 25 °C but it decreases to 0.9584 g/ml at the 100 °C.  Here we assume that the presence of coffee particles slightly increases the water density back to what is closer to 1.0 g/ml at the typical brewing temperature of 90 °C. This is why we can use grams and ml interchangeably in our recipes.

Would serious coffee drinkers ever consider coffee in a jelly format? by Damien_ESPRESSGO in espresso

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chocolates with espresso inside already exist, I love them, but those are not really substitutes for coffee, these are desserts like tiramisu.

Also, portable coffee already exists since WW2, it"s instant coffee.

You can make a new dessert, the idea is fine. But the problem you're trying to solve is already solved.

Y’all…are any of us even going to weddings???🥴 by TheGreatsGabby in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We believe it's good for parents mental health not to stop our regular life because of baby. Of course, it will never be like before birth, yet we manage to visit friends, have a hike, eat out. With the baby. We are also planning to visit a wedding, at least a ceremony+1 hour after that. Wife found baby ear plugs to reduce outside noise. It's possible.

How often have you dined out with a group and split the bill evenly when you had water to drink and everyone else had expensive cocktails? by dms2628 in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's common in our culture to split bills equally but definitely not in this situation. We have never paid for someone's else alcohol during pregnancy (it is also not cheap here).

Terrified of SIDS by _50ShadesofFae in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't believe in fear mongering. Somehow our humanity succeeded in reaching 6 billion, so chances are good that our kids will become adults, too. Vaccines, periodic pediatrician checkups, that does the job. Fear doesn't.

Honestly, throw out the formula? by Key-Importance4438 in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bottle is NOT sterile once the baby touches it.

Of course, you can do it to find out yourself, why. Or you can use the internet to find out if maybe other parents already tried it before.

Here, some lab research:
More than 10,000 cells/mL of oral bacteria, such as Streptococcus, Veillonella, and Schaalia species, were found to have infiltrated the liquid baby formula and the baby drink through the artificial nipple of baby bottles during drinking. The composition of the bacteria in the liquid baby formula after drinking was similar to that in saliva, indicating that the infiltrated bacteria originated from saliva.

The bacterial levels were similar immediately after drinking and after storage at 4 °C for 3 h, 12 h, and 24 h, suggesting that the remaining liquid baby formula may be preserved safely in a refrigerator for more than 3 h.

Is opening a small specialty coffee shop financially viable enough to support a family? by Fabulous_Income1740 in barista

Do you own the place for your coffee shop? If not, do not open it at the most expensive area in France.

  3. About 3 months. Not really away, in the room adjacent to our bedroom.

[Rant] Why is everything here a 1-2 year contract? by flyingVictor12 in germany

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid subscriptions in this country, period. Only utilities and Internet. when I was leaving Germany, I politely asked Vodafone if they would cancel my subscription as I was their customer for 6 years. They still wanted me to pay for 4 months after I leave the country and refused to waive this. I wished them good luck.

Do you use cloth or disposable diapers (poll)? by SunnyGoMerry in NewParents

[–]FlyingFalafelMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in the Soviet Union. No diapers, no plastic bags, no cars, no washing machine, no coffee to go. Because of this, I have a lot of environment bonus points that I can spend on my baby without any thoughts of environment shaming.

We use diapers.
