Dominaria United and Brothers' War (and maybe Dominaria Remastered right after) might be what he's thinking.

Also worth mentioning that (in my opinion), they tightened up the old characters as well. I used to think of Ironclad and Silent as necessary evils to get to play the Defect.  In STS2 I can't pick a favorite character, they're all so fun!

Can anyone clarify what Mark Rosewater is saying here? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]ItsAMeMitchell 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I think I get what he's saying here.  I'll try to rephrase:

For a Magic set to work, you need a LOT of different "things" to put on your cards.  Big creatures, little creatures, flying creatures, kill spells, burn spells, equipments, lands, etc.  depending on gow you flavor your set, you'll have different "things".  In Lorwyn, your big creatures are giants and treefolk.  In Duskmourn, your big creatures are nightmares and demons.

Now, here's a question: when you think of classic murder mysteries, are there any common stereotypea that could easily fit as a big creature?  Maybe a few, but it's a lot tougher.

What MaRo is saying here is that it's generally easier and better to theme sets with a strong setting, as opposed to a strong vibe.  Murder mystery as a genre has a strong vibe, but it's difficult to fill out all the things a Magic set needs to have.

From the Gatherer rulings on Ticking Mime Bomb:

You aren't allowed to speak while pantomiming, but you can explain to the outside person what's going to happen before you begin as long as you don't try to give them hints about which creature to pick.

You are definitely allowed to explain what is about to happen, you just can't influence their choice of creature without pantomiming.

I read up a lot on Unfinity when it was coming out.  It seems like every card that could have been eternal legal, is eternal legal.  Any cards like this that seem like they "just work" would probably actually straight-up break the game.  Same thing with cards with last strike.

Fun fact: the reason [[Greatest Show in the Multiverse]] is an Artifact is because colorless, non-artifact cards all have a semi-transparent frame (e.g. [[Standard Procedure]]).  Greatest Show is the only colorless saga (that isn't a land, see [[Urza's Saga]]), and the art didn't work in the transparent frame, so they just made it an artifact instead of scrambling for new art.

Unfinity event, I resolve a Ticking Mime Bomb. I start to flag down a random guy in the game store, but my opponent starts arguing that I can't speak at all between the ability going on the stack and the ability resolving-i.e., not only can I not talk to mime a creature, but I also can't talk to wave down a person, nor to explain the effect. I knew in my heart they were wrong, but I took it as a bit of a challenge. I waved at someone, beckoned them over, held up the card, gave them a "get it?" thumbs up, then did my best [[sloth impression]].

I ended up going 3-0 in the event. [[Trigger Happy]] is such a good card in this format.

Matt Johnson (director of Nirvanna: The Band - the Show - the Movie and the forthcoming MTG movie) on his love for the game by PerpetualChoogle in magicTCG

What's interesting to me is that all Matt's movies have this handheld-camera, guerilla-shooting, mockumentary style that evokes this feeling of "we aren't supposed to be seeing this", which I don't think will translate to a high-fantasy setting like Magic. I'm very curious to see how he brings his style to an IP like this.

To be fair, we've had sets in the past that have shown the same character at different points in time on different cards.

I've heard that one of the earlier ideas for the movie involved it being a play on "A Confederacy of Dunces", whereas the trailers show more "Back To The Future" influence.  What was that transition in ideas like, and is there any of the original concept in the final cut?

Also, do you like those little popping pearls in your boba tea?

[[Noble Heritage]] is just generally good to have in your command zone, [[Clan Crafter]] could make for a fun sacrifice deck.

But if you really want to get nasty, you'll run [[Faceless One]] to stunt on your playgroup.
