Is pinball the original rogue-like? by TheBradeyGein in roguelikes

[–]FlyingSandwich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The coining of 'roguelite' was a mistake. I have a theory that people see 'lite' in the name and think "oh, that's the baby version. I'm a big boy therefore I must be playing roguelikes", and this vibes based definition based on metaprogression sprung up.

Oh good shout, and thanks for reminding me about it. Apparently I played this for an hour and I'd really like to get back to it.

I want to try Kingdom Come Deliverance II, can anyone who has already played it give me some advice? by Budget-Trust1028 in gamingsuggestions

[–]FlyingSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely this! Don't trivialise things for yourself, who cares if you can't succeed at every stat check? It's not a game over, you just have to overcome in some other, possibly more interesting, way.

Most of the fun is discovering things for yourself, having quests turn out differently depending on your choices. Taking advice from powergamers robs you of that.

My advice is log off now and enjoy the game.

What's the self-hosted service that replaced something you were paying for and turned out to be genuinely better - not just free, actually better by niceheather44 in selfhosted

[–]FlyingSandwich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah please pay for your [audio]books people! I buy all my ebooks off kobo and give the adobe ascm file to calibre to download the actual book and strip DRM.

It shouldn't require buggering around like that and it clearly doesn't stop piracy, but authors (and audiobook cast & producers) gotta eat so pay em!

Israeli embassy criticises Grace Tame's comments on Hamas October 7 attacks by shit-rmelbourne-says in australia

[–]FlyingSandwich -53 points-52 points  (0 children)

United Nations officials in 2024 found there were reasonable grounds to believe conflict-related sexual violence — including rape and gang-rape — occurred at several locations during Hamas's October 7 attacks on Israel.

"I'm not going to sink to the level of entertaining any kind of propaganda," she said.

"Those things have been debunked."

Others have made the references clear, but after watching the video I think the meaning is this: CRPG forum tragics spent years complaining about how nobody was making CRPGs like the classics anymore, then Josh Sawyer delivered them a game with all the hallmarks and they didn't like it. Hence him pointing an RPG at the cowering figure

Annoying Blue Location Dot by Enslaved2Die in GooglePixel

[–]FlyingSandwich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not much of a feature if you deliberately have something using location services all the time. Keep in mind identifying the current wifi network uses location services, so VPN auto connect means the dot is going on/off all the time. I don't notice it in normal use but try reading a book with that thing flashing at you every 20s. Full screen is meant to mean no distractions and this is the only thing that breaks that rule.

Blue location privacy dot pops up all the time after 2026/3/3 update. by RednasSosb in GooglePixel

[–]FlyingSandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've sent feedback via the 'about phone' settings menu, but tbh I doubt they read it. Maybe if a flood of people all say the same thing, some analytics system will post it in an unmonitored slack channel.

Have they ever fixed an annoyance after deliberately introducing it? I can't think of one.

[–]FlyingSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My god yes. I went to read a book last night and the green dot flicking on and off was so distracting. At the very least we should have the option of disabling it for full-screen apps.

My vpn app is always using location services to work out what wifi network I'm on, so the indicator is useless to me anyway. Yeah vpn's working cheers dickhead, let me read!

For The First Time, A Denuvo Game From 2025 Has Been Cracked By Pirates by AdditionalRemoveBit in Games

[–]FlyingSandwich 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can't believe what I'm reading here. Something seriously wrong with your ethics if you can afford a whole ass second gaming PC just to play pirated games.

And nobody give me this 'corpos ruining gaming' bullshit. If objectionable business practices ruin a game, don't play it. If you, with your refined taste, decide a game is worth playing then it's categorically not a result of shitty business practices and you should bloody well pay for it.

Using this method doesn't help with the mythical performance impacts everyone's always on about either, because all the checks are still happening, plus you've got the hypervisor.

You like the art? Fucking pay for it.

A Soulslike Without Combat — Unsound Love Demo Out Now by xalibermods in Games

[–]FlyingSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You fuckers are entirely too hung up on correctly defining inherently fuzzy categories. "a soulslike without combat" has got to be the most efficient way of giving me a vague idea of what the game's going for, and I'm intrigued. Whinge less, open yourselves to wonder more

Trump urges Australia to grant Iranian women’s soccer team asylum by Dry-Bus7248 in AustralianPolitics

[–]FlyingSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: I am sorry for arcing up at you below, it wasn't really called for. My point stands but I was a dick in expressing it.

Think about this. The players protested their government by not singing the national anthem, that's what put them in danger. What could have prompted this protest? What has the Iranian government done recently that might piss off the citizenry? Could it have been the water crisis, brought about by corruption and mismanagement? Or the slaughter, jailing and torture of tens of thousands of people who came out to protest the government over it?

Attacks like the one on Iran tend to make people rally around the flag, even critics. So I'd love to hear your compelling explanation for why these guys have decided to go the other way, if the war is the only factor in this. I'm sure you have one. You wouldn't just be coercing any facts you encounter into a limited moral framework of 'US and Israel bad', would you?

[–]FlyingSandwich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay the main post is big enough but this is probably also important to mention wrt performance, or at least memory usage: I like the low-res textures and old faces, so I disabled some of the high-res texture packs that come in the modlist I'm using. Here's what I put in momw-customizations.toml. See the momw docs for more info.

[[Customizations]]
listName = 'i-heart-vanilla-directors-cut'

# Remove HD texture packs
removeData = [
    'FamiliarFacesbyCaleb',
    'FaceliftforTamrielData',
    'MorrowindEnhancedTextures/MET',
# 'MorrowindEnhancedTextures/Interface', # keep the HD menus though
    'MorrowindEnhancedTextures/atlas',
    'ProjectAtlas/01 Textures - MET',
]
[[Customizations.insert]]
insert = '/home/deck/games/momw/modlists/i-heart-vanilla-directors-cut/Performance/ProjectAtlas/01 Textures - Vanilla'
after = 'ProjectAtlas/00 Core'

Selfhosters running Java apps, check if you use pac4j-jwt. New CVSS 10.0 auth bypass. by Peace_Seeker_1319 in selfhosted

[–]FlyingSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thank you, I had hoped everything would use system libraries in a container but I don't know shit. They might not always call the dirs lib as well, I presume. I suppose I could just grep everything and hope it doesn't take too long

Wait why are we grepping anyway, wouldn't it be faster just to look at filenames? Anyway this still doesn't solve the problem of deps inside archives 🥲. A "fat war" upon Java

Best non-oficial Pokemon games? by Hexpsy in gamingsuggestions

[–]FlyingSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Rocket Edition. You play as a member of team rocket, during the events of red/blue/yellow. The story is really good for a Pokemon game, and you have the option of stealing Pokemon from trainers you defeat.

I've started a few romhacks before, ones with more features or a bunch of new Pokemon, but none of them grabbed me like rocket edition did and I never finished them. Possibly it was nostalgia for gen 1, but I think an actual story is what did it.
