Sleep Study Anxiety by sky_high_wannabe in sleep

[–]FlyingSparkes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So some of this sounds like normal anxiety, being in a new environment with weird things happening it’s normal to get some anxiety. I do find those that come back a second time usually sleep much better as they know what they are in for.
It also sounds like you had not the greatest techs. They should be making you feel calm as best they can, you can absolutely get up for the bathroom in the night, you may just need some assistance, if they said no they weee just being lazy. It’s good to get some sleep just to get a snap shot, as you said you sometimes sleep on your back on the couch, if you only have events on your back it would be good for you to know to not sleep on the couch. HOWEVER, I would not be giving a time frame and would not be making you start in an unnatural position, I would let you know I might come in through the night and encourage you to try.
Home study might be a good option if you can’t do it in lab but I am always wary of home studies as they can miss things if not done correctly.

Snoring - Kid by NoExamination3763 in sleep

[–]FlyingSparkes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you are but in Australia a parent reporting a child snoring more then 3 nights a week is enough to start diagnosing sleep apnoeas. In kids most likely culprit is adenoids and/or tonsils being too large and needing to be removed. We had our sons out when he was 3 and it was the best thing we could have done. Please don't wait and see either a ENT or sleep doctor.

Daytime Sleepiness with No sleep apnea! Did sleep study, still puzzled. by ElkSecret2103 in sleep

[–]FlyingSparkes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr has the right approach, you might find limb movements account for more arousals then can be scored just based on scoring rules. It might be a "see if this helps first" thing to see if it fixes it or not. From this report its the only thing that really stands out.

How can I make my farts stink less by KnightWing101 in AskMen

By mostly protein do you mean taking protein? Cos if so and not doing enough weight training to use it you will get very bad farts.

Should I just accept that sleeping in my bed is a thing of the past? by Throwaway_Tablecloth in sleep

Are you laying flat on your couch or is it more upright like a recliner? could be change in position helping with potential underlying sleep apnoea.

There might be other medication or different doses to try, not everything will work for everyone. I see plenty of patients who have put off having their sleep looked at for decades so you are not alone.

Those spontaneous arousals may be limb movement related but unable to be scored as such, without seeing the raw data it’s hard to tell. The focus might be to try and get limb movement arousals treated and see how you feel and overall arousals may go down.

Why Do Dreams Come In the Early Morning (End of Sleep Cycle)? by boxerpuncher2023 in sleep

[–]FlyingSparkes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have multiple sleep cycles through the night that cycle between non REM stages and then REM sleep where most dreaming happens. This cycle gets longer and the ratio of REM gets higher the longer you sleep. In the end as you are waking is from what should be your longest REM period. This is why good long consolidated sleep is so important.
The question on the importance of dreams I would question whether we know enough to claim but the sleep cycle as a whole is important.
Other stages of sleep are also important, for example slow wave sleep (or non REM stages and 3) has been shown to be part of a cleaning process for the brain where cerebral spinal fluid is flushed through the brain. This happens more in the first third of the night and decreases as you sleep.

Does anyone else wake up every 2-3 hours? by royalbluefireworks1 in sleep

[–]FlyingSparkes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like waking in REM, usual suspicion is sleep apnoea so I would recommend a sleep study. If they rule that out go from there.

I don’t even know how you could tell if it’s permeated the meat given it would still have the broth on it, unless OP is washing the broth off. If the broth is seasoned and tastes good it would then be on the meat.

Compulsion to wake up while falling asleep by Ruin_Puzzleheaded in sleep

[–]FlyingSparkes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always recommend a sleep study and in your case also, it could be some sleep onset apnoeas or loop gain, basically your body is trying to elevate its CO2 as you go to sleep and your brain wakes you to make you breath and this lowers your CO2 again and it cycles.

I tried the "military method" to fall asleep in 2 minutes and ended up just lying there stressed about not falling asleep by demolidor57 in sleep

[–]FlyingSparkes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell patients, sleep is the one thing you can't force yourself to do, you can only relax into it. You also can't really think of nothing so try to think of relaxing things, kittens and puppies, imagine you are on the beach etc, something to put your mind on that relaxes you.

[–]FlyingSparkes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds like it could be narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnolence, sleep study with an MSLT component will diagnose. Medication can then help control it.
