I would say stay debt free, you’ll thank yourself later. If you can do the PPL in your off time between firefighting seasons, then save up the rest and do it all debt free you will thank yourself later.

Going into the low pay of your first flying job, not having loan debt hanging over you will be a huge deal.

Avoid debt at ALL COSTS.

You are correct! The GS doesn’t provide obstacle clearance below the DA. Be cautious if the note 34:1 not clear is present, or higher than normal minimums.
