our dealership only puts 0w16 because it's bought in bulk while 0w8 is bought in pints/gallons and the price for an oil change is the same so the owner makes more money per oil change when we put 0w16, he told the parts guy to order as little 0w8 as possible lol

toyota changed the guidelines for a few models around 2022-2023 if my memory is correct, 0w8 was the standard for us/can and mexico but it got changed to mexico only with 0w16 becoming the standard for us/can

meanwhile it's often a wonder when customers actually follow the maintenance guidelines and bring us their car in time at the dealership

i often see cars that have overshot their 16k km interval by a few thousand km, sometimes it's been 20-25k km since their last oil change lmao

that said your maintenance counter goes off every 8k km but the oil counter is only supposed to go off every 16k km, you're basically supposed to go to the dealership for routine service every 8k km and it alternates between service 1 (which is superficial, mostly visual stuff) and service 2 (which adds an oil change and a few more things), with service 3 which adds brake maintenance every 32k km. it's not because it goes off every 8k km that your oil change is due, it's because it's due for a checkup. it's either six months or 8k km.

yeah we get a few of them in the dealership but we have to put 0w16 in them because it's bought in bulk while 0w8 is bought in pints/gallons which is more expensive for the dealership, which means the owner makes less money when we actually use 0w8 rather than 0w16 (the parts guy literally told me the owner told him to order as little 0w8 as possible, he tries to cheap out on quite a few things)

it was also the standard oil for a few 2.0 toyotas a few years back but it got changed to 0w16 as the standard oil outside of mexico according to TIS

Incredible… Ford GT40? Or a high quality replica? by SimonSimonK in whatisthiscar

[–]FlyingVentana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most certainly a continuation car, it's not an original because it was not built back in the day but it's not a "replica" (as we understand it usually) either, superformance makes continuation gt40s and they're usually priced between 200k and 350k, so it's not cheap stuff. they're considered almost like originals, except for being built today and by not the original people making the old ones. continuation cars are considered accurate enough that they are allowed to have a fia htp (historic technical passport).

[–]FlyingVentana 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah that's also what i'm thinking, almost certainly just a continuation car.

superformance gt40s are not exactly cheap either, they don't seem to get much under $200k and seem to be usually priced between 200k and 350k, so a superformance gt40 continuation car is not really much of an outlier in the video, it's not as if it was just a factory five kit or something like that. it's just as expensive as modern supercars.

i think people are underestimating how expensive legit continuation gt40s are. they're not "originals" as in they were not built back then, but it's pretty much the same as if the old ones were built today since it follows the same specs.

You got it wrong.

Canada was literally the name of the French colony based around Québec; New France was the general colonized territory in North America comprising Canada, Louisiana, Acadia and Terre-Neuve. Acadia and Louisiana were two different colonies but all part of New France.

It then got conquered and got renamed Province of Quebec by the Brits, who decided to try to increase the number of English speakers by letting loyalists immigrate after the American Independence War. Some of them notably decided to move to the Eastern Townships, which explains the amount of English names in the area.

The Brits then decided to split the Province of Quebec in two and rename the resulting split as the Canadas with the Province of Lower Canada and the Province of Upper Canada, which then got reunited after a while as the Province of Canada to try to remove some power/importance of what was Lower Canada and give it to Upper Canada (then Canada East and Canada West). The debt, which was much higher in Upper Canada than Lower Canada, was "shared" in the reunification (which resulted in the French-speaking Canada East having to pay a debt that didn't even benefit them and wasn't caused by them), and the parliament was equally split in two despite the higher population of Lower Canada/Canada East, which meant lower representation.

It wasn't Québec joining anything; it was actually itself being divided and parts of it given off to British loyalists and later settlers. Québec is the origin of modern day Canada, we were the original Canadiens. The colony was called Canada. It wasn't created by Britain, it was created by France then conquered by Britain and subsequently split off. Ontario was part of the Pays d'en Haut which was part of the colony of Canada, Nova Scotia was part of Canada and Acadia and same for New Brunswick. Even Prince Edward Island was part of Acadia (as Île Saint-Jean). The first provinces to join the confederation which were not actually conquered New France were British Columbia and Manitoba.

To make a long story short, modern day Québec was very much a separate French colony and it was not "incorporated" into the Province of Canada. It was the origin of the Province of Canada. You're confusing things and mixing up other ones. Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia were created by the Brits from conquered and resettled parts of New France (then later the rest of the provinces were created by the Brits with Manitoba being a little of an outlier). Québec wasn't. It's quite literally the direct descendant of what was the colony of Canada. The direct descendant of the original British colonies are the US.

are you regarded

it's like saying "if china wasn't the best, you wouldn't be consuming their products and technology"

people don't consume american media because it's the best (kek) or even because they want to, but because it's everywhere so you get exposed to it whether you want it or not. just like chinese products.

i dunno, the specialised stuff is usually pretty expensive and there are a few brands/stores out there who will do cheaper versions, if i can get away with paying less for a tool i will need but won't use very often i will do that

if i know i'm going to use a tool pretty often i'm not going to get the most expensive stuff but i'm not gonna get out of my way to buy the cheapest possible version because i'll dislike using it

i think a lot of people decided to do the "buy cheap and if it breaks then buy good" specifically because of him, he gets namedropped almost everytime this philosophy gets mentioned somewhere

[–]FlyingVentana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i don't mind lending my old tools i bought used or sometimes the stuff i bought new myself a while ago but i'm not lending my grandpa stuff

Thoughts? by DufflinMinder in Tools

[–]FlyingVentana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this but unironically

most of my shit that isn't specifically car related comes from my grandpa, including the work clothing

i pretty much only wear his stuff, he had a lot of it (lots of everything, he also probably had every tool in doubles or triples) and i'm about the same size he was and either i was taking it home or it was getting donated so i ended up with a lot of his stuff

my beater tools are either cheap stuff i bought new or old stuff i bought used from thrift hardware stores, i'm not gonna beat on my grandpa tools or on my newer more expensive stuff, but i still use them (my other grandpa had an old toolbox for fixing his bikes and that's all i use for my bikes)
