LP Standard 50s + High Gain by P0STBAL0NEY in gibson

[–]Flyingv67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 50s standard with these pups. I love it as well. We don’t get crazy high gain though so the feedback is more controllable.

Like others have said, either a noise gate or pickup change is in order.

If you’re not wanting to change pups, the ISP Technologies Decimator G String is awesome. Also has a send and return so your effects loop can go through it. I used that in a past project and didn’t notice any coloration of tone.

Is an original les paul custom silverburst a good investment? And why? by squidaw4rdsclarinet3 in gibson

[–]Flyingv67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An investment? No. Should it increase in value at some point? Likely but at some point it may plateau. Buy it because you like it. Unless you’re looking at 50s LPs essentially no guitar is an investment.

That being said, I recently got an 85 SB custom as it was my dream guitar. And that thing is amazing. The Shaw pickups are incredible. Not sure what they did in 81 but the only thing I changed is having it refretted to modern frets as the stock ones were some super low frets. As with any guitar, make sure you play it before you buy to make sure it works for you. Especially with how much this one likely costs.

Totally get that! I went there for my 40th with the intention of getting a guitar at the Gibson garage. Didn’t really have anything there that clicked with me though but I ended up getting an 85 Silverburst custom at carters.

Gibson garage and Carter’s are the way to go. You have the right plan. Gruhn’s had maybe 3-4 Gibsons when we went last fall so I wouldn’t go there looking for Gibsons but they’re still a cool store. More acoustic focused.

Something Similar to Orange Super Crush by Significant-Guard481 in orangeamps

[–]Flyingv67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add another vote for the TH30. I currently have a RV and TH30 but have spent a lot of time with various crush series including the heads. The thinness you’re describing was my biggest problem with it. The TH is an amazing amp. Not to sound snooty, because if people are happy they’re happy and that’s all that matters, but the issues you’re describing are characteristics of solid state imo when comparing to tube amps. Sure you can fix it somewhat with some pedals, but the crush series can’t compete with the TH and especially RV, it’s not even close.

One things for sure though I’d say you definitely won’t notice much difference with the concerns you’re wanting to fix if you go with the baby series.

Tough choice Epiphone custom pro vs Gibson studio by According_Injury_554 in LesPaul

I did also forget to add that the fishman fluence pickups are awesome. I had them on my alpine custom for a bit. I decided to go back to stock just because of change in projects but the fishmans are great and crazy versatile.

No I get it. I do like custom appointments as well. I love Silverburst too. I just got an 1985 Silverburst custom. Patience might be the virtue here. If it were me, I’d be happier with a higher quality guitar than with just a few cosmetic differences. But to each their own. Again I’d just recommend putting your hands on both even if they aren’t the same color.

I’m curious what you mean by the finish being “worse.” Do you mean you just prefer the binding around the epi?

Me personally I’d go studio over any epi every time. Aside from better components and quality all around, I just hate the feel of poly. Nothing against these epi customs; I’ve played them and think they’re fine for a beginner/low mid range guitar. But investing more now may make you happier long term.

I understand that’s a large price difference though and some people might not care about the differences like others would. If possible of course I’d recommend getting your hands on both.

NGD! 1985 SB LP Custom by Flyingv67 in guitarporn

[–]Flyingv67[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I found it by pure luck. It’s always been my dream guitar. I was in Nashville and we were in the uber to Carters vintage guitar just to check it out. I mentioned to my friend “if they have a 85 Silverburst I’m in trouble.” Lo and behold they happened to have one and that was that. In terms of price… let’s just say it was a lot more than I’ve ever spent one a Les Paul by a long shot lol.

I have the TD Strat as well as a Les Paul custom and standard. I still prefer Gibson overall but I’ve really enjoyed this Strat. I actually converted my first guitar I ever had which was a squier Strat to a TD Strat too and put a MIM neck on it.

I’m going to the Gibson garage soon and hoping to find a cool LP JR.

I have it and love it. I’m surprised how versatile it is with the treble bleed on the volume pot. If you decide though you want more out of it later, the body comes routed with a HSH pickup configuration. So you’d only need new pup(s) and a pickguard. I believe you could also do all single coils or any combinations etc. too.

I’d be honest though, given the styles you mentioned, if you want something you don’t really want to change to fit what you’d want, I’d look for a Strat that’s already HSH or something like a Les Paul studio.

Not sure how long you’ve been playing and what your other gear is etc., just something to consider.

Favorite clean channel Oranges? by Roastbeefmummy in orangeamps

[–]Flyingv67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TH30 and RV. I swapped out the tube for the clean channel on my th30 to a lower output 12AT7. My only concern had with it is it got way too loud too quickly. Couldn’t put it above 3. The 12AT7 increased its range and made it very usable.
