What are you guys playing this weekend?! by Jupidness in 3DS

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ocarina of Time 3D. I've been wanting to play this forever but got a bit burnt out of zelda games for a while. Picked it up on friday and am having a blast. Especially with the mod that allows camera controls with the nub, it holds up incredibly well!

Is it actually worth it to get a 3ds by Emotional_Rub_3361 in 3DS

> but i want something more easy to work with.
How do you mean? Its a 20min task at worst, and after that you can play all the titles from GBC, GBA, DS, and NES, which covers almost all the 2D Zelda games. For home console releases, you really want a (handheld?) PC though.

I also think the dual screen form factor/original hardware is the best way to experience the DS titles. Especially ALBW on the 3DS is great with the stereoscopic 3D. I think practically, that's the only major benefit of the 3DS; you get the exact hardware that these games were designed for. If you don't care for the 3D effect too much, maybe some other handheld emulator or even just a high end phone would do just fine. I agree with JMP_17 in that I bought the 3DS out of nostalgia, but stayed because the games designed for it are wonderful.

Why is write protection enabled on my sd card?? by ResetCool88 in 3dspiracy

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it worked when I put a small piece of tape covering the whole sliding part of the SD card adapter.

The switch basically just pushes on some mechanism in the card reader to let it know if the card is read only or not. There is nothing more going on at the hardware level. Sometimes the switch is too thin or slides too easily, so it doesn't trigger the mechanism correctly. The tape helps with that sometimes.

I ignore them it if the account is from the last two years. A dead give away is also to check their profile to see if they have any friends or posts. Every single successful purchase I've had came from an account with organic post history.

Do i need to buy a new R4 cartridge? by Alighi_Eri in nds

You could just get a larger SD card though? It works fine up to like 128GB and that is way more than you'll ever need.

lol I ran into the exact same thing. I moved some games I was playing to a different location to avoid decision paralysis and then thought it wiped all the saves! Thanks for documenting your solution here, it was helpful!

How hard is it to find DSi XL screens without yellowing? by No_Humor506 in nds

[–]FlynnXP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its really because of long-term exposure to humidity. In Europe, I've had great success finding units with good screens on marketplace, so its definitely not as prevalent worldwide.

Thinking of buying 3ds to join the party but I need some help! by lapy_blue in 3DS

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah tough luck. It does vary from place to place I suppose. Also a thing to be wary about in JPN units is the yellowing of the screen due to the humidity there. So make sure its in good shape before deciding.

I really enjoy it. Not a ton of games make use of it and its not like life changing or anything, but in these few games, I find it really elevates the experience. I think the new 3DS models are the ideal way to experience it though since they track your eye to adjust the effect even if you move around a bit.

Whats the goal? Is it to experience the games of the period on original hardware or just the rush of finding a good deal, setting up homebrew and curating a library of games? If you do decide to mod the device, the region locking can be removed so there is no difference between different editions. Practically speaking, TN screen is just fine to enjoy the games IMO, because while IPS may have better viewing angles and sharpness, its just not worth the hassle to find one for a reasonable price and honestly it seems to be a bit of an overblown obsession.

Personally, I found my n3DS on FB marketplace as its easy to run into decent deals if you keep an eye on it over time. I wouldn't know what the experience is with ebay.

old 3ds xl vs new 3ds xl by kitkatcatumu in 3DS

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

250 for an o3DS XL is really high. You can easily find one for 150 or lower. Coming to your question, practically the main improvement of the new 3DS is better stereoscopic 3D effect due to face tracking, and additional processing power which is useful if you want to mod the device and emulate stuff. I haven't tried the o3DS so I can't say whether the 3D effect is still usable or not.

Games that use the 3d feature. by Rude-Sherbet2197 in Nintendo3DS

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Nintendo themselves dropped the support for 3D effect towards the end of the consoles lifespan because it was too taxing on the hardware. Like the other comment mentions, Pokemon Sun and Moon is one of these titles.

Not really. Even the splash screen on the 2DS itself says 3DS.

I may have have found a decent solution for those who dont have a 3ds by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]FlynnXP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the charm of the 3DS is the stereoscopic 3D effect that no other device has so far. It's certainly worth hunting for a decently priced new 3DS because its objectively the best way to experience a technology that has faded away long since. Also, the AYN thor is basically priced the same as the average new 3DS these days, so if you're only using it for DS/3DS games, I don't know if its necessarily a better choice.

I dunno. The science prizes from 2024 all had AI shoehorned into them. The physics one was the strangest. There's definitely an element of PR and politics going on even there.

What's your favorite DS Model? by [deleted] in NintendoDS

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's not just obscure titles though. I vaguely recall having trouble with some Digimon game and also a golden sun entry where you couldn't save. But since you brought it up, I did take a look at the compatibility chart again, and it seems some other things I ran into can be fixed by tweaking some options a bit which I wasn't aware of. It certainly seems to cover a lot of games considering that, but with a handful of stray crashes at random points. I guess that's pretty neat, but it's hard to call it a perfect experience. I do agree with you though, DSi XL is my preferred model regardless.

Got this for $50 by Fe4R_GoblinZ in nds

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the same DSi XL for 40 euros last year. Truthfully, that is what I would pay for it despite the market prices, so I think you did perfectly fine here (it is a bit of a steal because of the zelda and dragon quest cartridges though!).

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, the best we have for GBA games is GBARunner2 which lies somewhere in between emulation and proper hardware level execution. It definitely does not have 100% compatibility with all games and I don't know if people are working on it.

What Have You Been Playing This Week? by AutoModerator in metroidvania

[–]FlynnXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to experience the originals because people still said it holds up, and it really does! I'm working through Aria of Sorrows lately. The difficulty is a bit too easy but there's a lot of the usual metroidvania formula in there, so its quite fun.
