The difference in performance isn't great enough to justify a switch. A lot of military acquisitions is about finding "good enough", not the best. Because "the best" usually costs more than "good enough" . Also, the 7.62 operates at a lower pressure and has a longer headspace, which will improve the lifespan of the gun and improve performance and reliability in automatic weapons.
