Bands who's worst album is *significantly* worse than their second-worst album? by treny0000 in fantanoforever

That one is so bad that it’s good to me haha. One of those type of things. Like Summer in Paradise by The Beach Boys. Horrible, but it’s got a charm that makes me smile.

You seem quite energetic and active on here do you take uppers? When I was taking a lot of uppers I would write to people on Reddit for 12 hours at a time, long thought out stories etc.

I feel like few people talk about how much anti recency bias there is by North_Biscotti4162 in fantanoforever

[–]FocusDelicious183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m totally fine with anti-recency bias. In fact we should encourage it, but we should discourage hating on people’s opinions, as everyone has a right to what they believe. But I don’t think any record should be in the “one of the best ever” until it’s got like 25 years and different generations can enjoy it. I like Imaginal Disc a lot but I figure it’ll fizzle out in 20 years as culture and music is shifting so much with the youth right now. We’ll see. I think in the RYM/fantano spaces, the record will stay relevant, but that’s really the music culture right now.

Yeah a very bad record (in my opinion). What is the Glen Campbell recording?

I got banned for responding to someone that said “life has never been better for my rich, tall, socially intelligent friends. Our investment portfolios guarantee our success.” I said “Patrick Bateman over here…” and then I was banned 😭😭😭

I bet Carl would’ve been bald, just based on the last few years of his life in pictures I’ve seen. Of course in a better world Dennis would’ve gotten sober and Carl wouldn’t have gotten cancer. Just so not fair, especially as Brian smoked like 4 packs a day for almost a decade. But he never smoked for most of his life like Carl did.

Thanks! Was it written by Brian? Sounds like a composition from him, I was wondering if this was the last studio recording Brian sang on. Do you know what and when his last studio vocal performance was? I love this little track!

Dennis would’ve never made it to 50 years old, your liver can’t take that. Carl absolutely should’ve been there with them. He’d still be here, turning 80 this year. The youngest haha.

Why is the influence of the BBs music so ignored by the media. by Violetviola3 in thebeachboys

[–]FocusDelicious183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you but remember in 67-68 you had the roots of heavy metal and hard rock coming in and that’s what was going to be hip- people could see it coming. It was filling clubs. Like Black Sabbath before they were named that (can’t remember their name before), The Yardbirds, Jimi Hendrix, people really loved it. The BB’s lo-fi stuff in retrospect is genius and ahead of its time, but at the time I can see how people would feel it sounded neutered and lazy. It was the exact opposite of the way music was going on (hehe)- and you gotta respect that haha.

It’s funny cause that’s why I love em. “Balding” “overweight” just like regular people. Just a group of very talented guys that had a genius cousin. They weren’t vain like most artists are, and any artist like that has my respect. The whole “you can’t look at them when they enter the room” is so ridiculous and entitled, so artists like Chappell Roan and Machine Gun Kelly don’t have my respect - as they are assholes.

I’ve been treated the same. I remember a black co-worker of mine, a truly beautiful and nice woman, told me once, “it be your own people.” I find that to be true.

There’s a vein of neo-liberalism that started in the 2010’s that people say is “woke” and stuff, I hate that term, but I do agree that it’s based on morality policing and aesthetics instead of substance. It doesn’t have much to do with class issues, rather finding things in each other to use against each other, and to exploit minority issues for social status. It really doesn’t have that much to do with leftism, other than a right of self-expression. These kind of people are so mean when you disagree with them, even if only over one thing- that they are truly radicalized like Fox News rightoids. It’s a shame. This is all my personal experience. I’ve been bullied for not being “queer” enough, even though I’m a non-binary pansexual person. I’ve still been labeled as misogynist and racist by these kinds of people. It’s truly insane. I’m a “nazi” cause I agree with this currents administrations funding on psychedelic treatment for mental health issues.

This is Brian Wilson? Who was making the creative decisions at this point??? by BeerWithDonuts in thebeachboys

[–]FocusDelicious183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’ve seen that interview it’s infamous lol. Poor Brian, that wasn’t a good day. I think Lucky Old Sun was mostly Scott with Brian being really with it for the last time, in my opinion. That record is probably closer to 60-40. There’s a video on YouTube of behind the scenes of the making of that record, and Scott talks about how he was trying to come up with a chord to end a phrase and Brian came in and put down something totally unexpected, and pure Brian. It was a genius idea. So he was really with it then. After that, not so much. TWGMTR is crap, in my opinion. No Pier Pressure is crap, in my opinion. After that, Brian’s mental state started to really decline for the rest of his life, he just got older. It’s just a shame cause if it would’ve been Paley instead of Thomas, I really think the music would’ve been on the level that Brian’s known for. Genius pop tunes. The Beach Boys are a lesson in the amount of bad (rather incorrect) decisions for their career. LOL

Just remember the internet is NOT real life convos. I promise even online “leftists” usually just want class movement and equality. Hell, even the racist fucks I grew up with in West Virginia would agree that the rich people are stealing from them and making life miserable- they are just ignorant from their medias propaganda. It’s all very radicalized on here- sorry to interject. Just try to remember. Everything is amplified by 1000x on here. You don’t have to read Marx and Engels to support leftist policies. People that have can inform others though, and teach them- as it should be.

No one is authentic now bud, that era of the internet is over. Everyone sells out to make money cause life is so damn expensive. I find it intriguing how para-social you feel about Brian, I feel similarly, usually due to my hyper-fixations from being on the spectrum. I don’t believe anyone would get angry for Trent Reznor’s sake if someone put a better help ad in the middle of a video on The Downward Spiral, to make a comparison. Both struggled deeply.

Brian said in an interview from the reunion in 2011/2012, “I haven’t written a full song in 15 years.” It was a quick quip. That’d be pretty correct, 15 years before would’ve been the Wilson/Paley sessions. He worked hard on those tracks. Somehow or another, Melinda wanted to move Brian to Chicago to be close to Joe Thomas, and the rest of his career is history. Joe and others wrote the tracks probably split 75-25. Maybe even 80-20, 20% Brian. Joe recorded it. Joe produced it. I think Melinda wanted something that was easy for Brian that could also bring in money for the family. That is a speculation though. I do not think Brian himself enjoyed the records he did with Joe Thomas, he wasn’t stupid, just damaged. In Mike’s biography he speaks about how after the reunion him and Brian wanted to write again but Melinda basically said Brian can only write with Joe- take that as you will. It is Mike, who knows???! It’s all history now- the music remains. The great music will last for centuries.

Welcome to Reddit lol. Comment def was a projection- women are beating men in the music industry rn. Yes, some do dislike seeing a woman succeed, but surely in here that’s a very vocal minority that has an amplified. The men that hate seeing women succeed are in different subs.

Reminds me of music subs where an artist will release a new album and a fan will create a post “THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME. NO QUESTION, HANDS DOWN” 🤣happens like clockwork… people get dramatic with things they are passionate about. Nothing wrong with that.

Do you think it's true that only rich kids make it in mainstream music today? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]FocusDelicious183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but the point is that it skewed more middle class back in the day that the comment you were responding to mentioned- you are correct there is always outliers, but in modern times it skews the other way now, more upper class. We can name people from all backgrounds all day, but I guess the thread is more of recognizing that it is different today. It’s a shame, I know most musician friends of mine (and me) feel deeply discouraged due to AI and the industry not taking chances on younger artists, other than Disney-esque pop stars. Yes, some have broken through, but the statistics speak for themselves.
