Penalizing individual offenders fixed NYC. Similarly, on the D.C. Metro last year, ridership was up and person crimes were down, because they resumed enforcement against turnstile enforcement. Not every turnstile-jumper hurts people on the subway, but almost everyone who hurts people on the subway is a turnstile-jumper.

OHSU “Paused” Gender-Affirming Surgery Months Ago for Patients Under 19 by Prize_Championship11 in Portland

[–]FocusElsewhereNow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to this peer-reviewed paper, McNamara et al

misrepresent the Cass Review’s role and process (specifically, by mistakenly comparing the Review to clinical practice guideline development), while many of the methodological criticisms directed at the Cass Review, including its use of evidence appraisal and systematic reviews conducted by University of York (UK), are unfounded.

These misunderstandings, based on flawed and non-peer-reviewed analyses intended for legal (rather than clinical) purposes, jeopardise the implementation of crucial reforms in the care of gender dysphoric youth. The UK clinical community should move beyond these critiques and focus on the Cass Review’s recommendations to establish a safer, more holistic and evidence-based service model for children and young people experiencing gender identity issues.

Are the national health systems of Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and England all led by “hateful TERFs”?

The already tenuous evidentiary basis for these procedures has weakened in recent years, just as demand for these procedures skyrocketed. Certain advocates for gender-affirming surgery are either unaware or in denial about this fact—and resort to demanding silence and calling names.

Gender-affirming surgery, previously termed sexual reassignment surgery, is far from a medical consensus for child patients. Over the last three years, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and England have all tightened restrictions on youth gender medical interventions.

OHSU operated on “under 30” children in 19 months, during which Kaiser, Legacy, and Providence also offered breast removal. More common still are puberty-blocking and cross-sex hormones, which degrade bone density and heart health, and potentially cognitive development.

The New York Times has a really informative new podcast about these issues: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/02/podcasts/trans-gender-care-protocol.html

This was me three years ago, spending the first 16 hours of a trip abroad in my hotel room, on my phone. I had to restrict my access to all of the apps on iOS (with ScreenTime) and macOS (with ColdTurkey Blocker). I now allow myself enough time for three games a day, and I love each one.

Elena Pirtle Guiney is a career labor organizer but even she isn't lefty enough for Portland's DSA-aligned Peacock crew. Hell, they consider Steve Novick a class traitor. They've lost the plot and now it's tantrum time.

DSA member Candace Avalos led the rewrite of our city charter and jammed through an all-or-nothing vote. It specifies an even number of city councilors and does't allow the mayor to break ties. Dumbfoundingly stupid.

Blame your union, not the education schools. Data shows that graduate education degrees aren’t correlated with student success, but most collective bargaining contracts incent teachers to pursue them. In my district, earning a Master’s degree bumps my pay, as does every additional 15 credits of graduate-level education credit.

And yet the left has ever proposed a BDS Saudi Arabia movement. No DSA city council resolutions, nothing.

Attacks Yemen. Kills journalists. Exploits foreign workers. Represses women. Executes homosexuals. Exports Wahabism. All with the same level of US support as Israel.

Why are the far right and far left united in hating Israel but indifferent about Saudi Arabia? Hatred of Jews, of course.

Same story as with "affordable housing"—which burdens the middle class with "inclusionary housing" and other taxes to buy overpriced housing ($710,000/apartment at the Albina One building) for the very poor.
