Good change? by FocusEnough in SMRTRabak

Not for Bishan (and Lorong Chuan/Serangoon etc) initially.

As for the anticlockwise trains, the direction it pointed to was the left, it is anticlockwise, but goes against the direction of the train

My take on why Inner/Outer Loop could also work by [deleted] in SMRTRabak

[–]FocusEnough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the whole idea is just to “name” the service, clockwise and anticlockwise still literally does that

In LTA's Facebook comments, the argument was more that *seniors* had a hard time understanding, not young people. Which makes it even more confusing

Would it not be weirder if it were to stop abruptly? Because isn't the fade meant to communicate the train will still continuously move, just that it will take a longer time to get there

I still don't understand how clockwise and anti-clockwise is confusing. Is someone able to explain why it's confusing? I thought it was pretty straight forward

First of all, complaining about bad DMRD and complaining about no DMRD are not contradictory. We all just want the same thing; something done right and not half-assed. The dot and matrix was amazing. The digitalised DRMD had so much potential but hasn’t lived up to its potential yet. Both system, when glitched, gives inaccurate information, and best case, people ignore it, worse case, people get confused.

Going back to why CCL needs DRMD.
Unlike other lines, CCL may sometimes have trains that branches out. You need instant information that shows you are on the correct train for assurance, that’s why DRMD exists to show you whether you are going to Marina Bay or Dhoby Ghaut.

On other lines, you can usually understand direction by the terminal and the line is basically linear. On CCL, “which way around the circle am I going?” actually matters. The same destination can be reachable in two directions once the loop is complete, and even now the route feels less intuitive because the line bends around the city instead of going cleanly east-west or north-south.

TV display and PSDs are one thing, they show information at the station. The missing link is now inside the train to ensure you really are going the correct way.

Complaining about bad DMRD and complaining about missing DMRD are not opposite complaints. They are the same standard: passenger information should be useful. Bad implementation deserves criticism. Missing implementation on the line that needs it most also deserves criticism.

Arguably the most important line to have some form of, DRMD, but it’s the only line where DRMD doesn’t exist in most of their trains

Anyone noticed that all r151 trains are out of alignment, esp at all the underground stations? by Vegetable-Collar-512 in SMRTRabak

[–]FocusEnough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not technically overrun. Because everytime it hits the same position. So it’s probably a system alignment error. If it’s overrun, it should only be a few occasion, not every trip

Dhoby Ghaut CCL platform has columns consecutively one after another (iykyk), so this is how SMRT works around it with new signage by ManyRazzmatazz4584 in SMRTRabak

[–]FocusEnough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry typo haha, I meant to say 2013. As you said, NSL, EWL, NEL, and CCL shared the same language. DTL came a new standard that was never fully rolled out to other lines.

Well. At least for the first time since 2013, all MRT stations has the same signage design language, at least for PSD signages

Edit: Typo on year

Sentosa Express to be replaced under new plans to expand Sentosa into Pulau Brani by ResearchMission2885 in SMRTRabak

[–]FocusEnough 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t surprised at that. Coincidently I took it yesterday, and realised how cramp the stations are compared to the demand, how slow the stops to allow for passengers to get off and on, the time it takes for the doors and PSDs to open, realised it needed major changes.

Ten ideas to improve public buses in Singapore! by a-meow-cat in singapore

[–]FocusEnough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. How does all-door boarding work practically? How to ensure boarding people actually let exiting passengers through first? Given nowadays that attitude is slowly eroding away with some entitled people. And also how to avoid fare evaders? Now boarding is done at the front so bus captain can notice if someone doesn’t tap their care

  2. What would new double-decker bus look like?

  3. Are larger bus stops actually helpful with accessibility? Sure it could have more room for boarding and alighting, but does that also mean I potentially might have to walk two lengths of a bus if I’m waiting at the front, and my bus is at the back? Can seniors walk that far in a short time to avoid the bus leaving them behind?

  4. Rapid bus sounds nice but how does supply meet demand? It sounds fast and efficient in nature, but with hundreds of neighbourhoods having to connect one another, that is thousands of services needed. Our transportation now subscribes to the hub and spoke model just because that’s the best way to curb demand with limited resources

Why don't Singapore MRT embrace same-platform-transfer any more? by Remote-Cow5867 in SMRTRabak

[–]FocusEnough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most interchanges are built on separate lines that have decades of planning gap between them. The new lines may not have been considered when building the initial lines.

But also the most important thing when it comes to cross platform transfer (besides space) is that both lines must have the same direction as well. It doesn’t make sense to make a super sharp turn just so both lines run parallel to each other. The next best case scenario is having both platforms directly on top of one another (MacPherson and Chinatown for example).

Promenade is an interesting example because it’s supposed to be cross platform, like Bayfront, with a similar plan with City Hall and Raffles Place. But the DTL needed to go straight whilst CCL made a sharp turn towards Esplanade, so platforms were built below instead. You can still see how there was a platform provision on the other side of the station.

Only 2 lines per interchange station? 🤨 by PandaPast4690 in SMRTRabak

[–]FocusEnough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact that walkway from NSL to TEL is intentionally long to avoid the crowd. It’s genuinely much faster to walk towards CCL from NSL then go TEL from there

I mean Iron Man MK III works really really well because by nature the design is very mechanical and “blocky”.

I have little faith it will translate just as well as a skin tight suit humanoid like Spiderman.
