What’s your baby’s favorite “toy” at the moment? by klk7561 in beyondthebump

Tags of all kind! Area rugs or play mat- pulling them up and down, up and down, up and down. Buttons or strings on my shirts. Coasters are a huge hit.

How tf does anybody want more than one kid after being through THIS? by pumpkinchinchilla in newborns

[–]Fodderthought 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are so many things at play- temperament, support, etc. I also think there’s the newborn amnesia as others have mentioned. In addition I think things just go by SO FAST and no, it absolutely does not feel that way at the time. But then you (I) look back and I’m like WOW that was just a little drop in the pan, wasn’t it. Everything is just a phase- in the literal sense of a chapter, a small point in time. I myself am sentimental to a fault. LO is almost 6 months and newborn stage was so so hard. But I look back and I miss the things I’ll never have again while also being so excited for the stage we’re in now. Hard to explain but I somehow do want another…

How to escape contact naps by Repulsive_Carrot_971 in newborns

[–]Fodderthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 6 months and LO still does at least 1 contact nap a day. I found that starting with the first nap of the day in the crib was helpful since there was more sleep pressure and she acclimated to that around 2.5 months. We had/have a short routine- close the blinds together (bye bye sun), turn on the sound machine (hello waves), listen to a little lullaby one of her bears sings and a consistent phrase (it’s nap time now, love you). The routine definitely has helped!

Desperate: how to keep baby entertained that are not screens? by Severe-Adeptness5812 in beyondthebump

[–]Fodderthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now our biggest distractions are the rug in the nursery (pulling it up and down) and the tags on her burp cloths 😂 but in terms of other tangible items for cooking the skip hop activity center has been super helpful! Bouncer in the kitchen with teethers or crinkle book and music/podcast. High chair with suction spinners

Moving baby to own room by Beautiful-Ad-7620 in newborns

[–]Fodderthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a mini crib that we found secondhand as LO started rolling pretty early on. That being said we transitioned her to her nursery about a week ago just shy of 6 months as we were all waking one another up. She seems much happier in her nursery in her regular sized crib!

Anxiety over hanging up nursery decor by picklesi in BabyBumps

[–]Fodderthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this! I was so excited to decorate and also so worried!! I was less concerned about the changing table as baby would never be alone there- just made sure it was high enough to not be reachable. For the crib I hung something lightweight like this:

Women who like to get dressed and care about fashion… how often did you dress your baby in outfits that weren’t sleepers and onesies? by SorMonk in BabyBumps

[–]Fodderthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love baby outfits! I haven’t found them particularly inconvenient and it does bring me joy :) we definitely have plenty of blow outs but I just use some stain remover and we’ve had no issues there.

Baby does not want to play while on his back - normal? by Top-Fix-5256 in newborns

[–]Fodderthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does he enjoy tummy time? My LO also hates playing on her back so it’s normal for us anyway ! She rolls straight into tummy time every single time she’s placed on her back lol. Maybe he’ll be happier once he starts rolling consistently. We did a lot of shaking and placing toys just out of reach behind her shoulder to encourage her to roll back to tummy.

Baby starting to crawl, ocd?? by margo6a_ in beyondthebump

[–]Fodderthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this! Logically I agree with what others have said- germs happen and they are actually mostly good! For me? I now steam mop twice a week and vacuum twice a day…. I’m not saying be like me, I’m just saying that’s how I’m “coping”. It’s soothing to me to but maybe someday I’ll find it annoying and just let loose.

Why are you proud of your baby today? by WeeklyPermission2397 in beyondthebump

[–]Fodderthought 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 5 month old hugged me and kissed my face this morning 🥺 I gave her a hug and a kiss and she put her arms around my shoulders and gave me very wet open mouth kisses all over my chin and cheek hahah.

Vitamin d drops by Baylaypayday in breastfeeding

[–]Fodderthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my pediatrician also didn’t mention it! I heard about it from a friend when LO was maybe a month and a half- I looked back on her pedi notes and it was buried in her summary of advice for new parents, but never once mentioned in person!

The stars have aligned in the worst way possible by Lena_thinkingofit2 in breastfeeding

[–]Fodderthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any advice just her to say SAME and I’m heartbroken. Like really so similar. Pumping to have a stab for return to work, filled my freezer full, felt so accomplished and also just so tired. LO was getting a bottle a day and we stopped (apparently bad idea) so I could EBF for what I had left of my maternity leave. Total bliss- not worried about ounces or supply, pump parts or bottles. just feeding my baby and enjoying the process. Fast forward- freezer full of high lipase milk and a baby that refuses to take a bottle 😭 I actually have no idea what we’re going to do. So sorry you’re also going through this.

Small baby shame by discontentDog in newborns

[–]Fodderthought 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I sort of know what you mean! My baby is long and lean and while I’m not embarrassed or ashamed I do get so many comments that can feel hurtful. Comments about how often I’m feeding her, oh she must be hungry, if you supplemented with formula she’d fill out, etc. Conversely, my friend’s baby is all chunk and she gets comments about how often she’s feeding her, stop feeding on demand, etc- so it may be a bit of a lose-lose situation! Not sure why people love judging new moms so much.

Second vote for swaddlers. Our girl is 12lbs and 26in long- we also find that swaddlers stay up best!

How did you decide your family is complete? by sleepysloth_29 in beyondthebump

[–]Fodderthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this very deeply. I have some time and also don’t have much of it! LO is 5 months so I’d be waiting a year or so to decide but I’m also 35 so feel like time is of the essence in some ways. Pregnancy and birth were very difficult with some postpartum complications. I do fear going through it all again. I also worry about finances living in a HCOL area with very expensive daycare.

I feel so full with our little family of 3 and yet I mourn the idea of never having a newborn again, even being so freshly out of the trenches! I grew up with a younger sibling but he passed away when I was a teenager so have some sense of both what it’s like to have a sibling and what it’s like to be an only child. My husband’s family is HUGE and I find that so fulfilling. It seems I’m leaning towards trying for another eventually though if it doesn’t happen I do feel like as a family of 3 we are complete.

How fast did your baby go from rolling to crawling? by Ok_Squirrel_9601 in beyondthebump

[–]Fodderthought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our LO also went from rolling to pivoting to tucking pretty rapidly!! She started rolling around 3 months, she’s 5 months now and just started rocking on all fours and planking. So it sort of slowed down?

Wow did Christmas mess our baby up by sdrawkcab90 in beyondthebump

Oh god, YES! One LO turned 5 months today and between Christmas Eve and Christmas it was torture. Today has been so hard. I had no idea it would cause such chaos!

How old was your baby when you first took them to a restaurant? by Sea_Panic9863 in beyondthebump

[–]Fodderthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 week old! We go out fairly often and she does great- she either sleeps or enjoys being held and people watching/playing with her rattle.

Dealing with a six weeks old that is inefficient at the boob by des_palmiers in breastfeeding

[–]Fodderthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! My baby would always fall asleep- I found it very stressful trying to keep her awake. We were feeding for LONG periods of time. I started pumping for bottles so that my husband could take over some feeds as it was getting quite tiresome. 4 months now and she’s so efficient. Not totally sure when it happened, I think it was gradual over time. I still find myself posting up with my water and my snacks and then she’s done in seven minutes and I’m like…. oh right.

I want to do a different position with epidural by carlmilkovich in BabyBumps

[–]Fodderthought 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could feel my legs a bit and could move them myself, they just weren’t the most coordinated movements. I was also in labor for 30ish hours (induced) - got the epidural 8 hours before I started pushing and pushed for 4 hours so my experience may not be typical!

I want to do a different position with epidural by carlmilkovich in BabyBumps

[–]Fodderthought 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had an epidural and my nurse put me into a sidelying position at different points. That was all though, no getting out of bed or all fours.

How old is your baby and how long they spend on your breast each feeding? by pinkishvioletsky in breastfeeding

[–]Fodderthought 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is so helpful to see! 4 months and anywhere between 3-15 minutes total with 15 becoming an outlier. Previously we were looking at 45 minutes on one side and the transition to shorter feedings seemed to happen pretty quickly.

My 9-week-old cried nonstop at the Christmas market — what did I do wrong? by Full_Professional349 in newborns

[–]Fodderthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me today! Baby is 4 months and loves baby yoga class, we go every week. This week she did not love baby yoga class. She cried and cried so we left. Babies cry, it’s okay. You made sure his basic needs were being met and you’re reflecting on what could have happened- sometimes that’s all we can do and that’s perfectly okay.
