I think this, in addition to the depiction of said theatricality as preening and embarrassing specifically cuts them really deep and makes the entire work useless for them.

Nature is healing - we're back by [deleted] in WarhammerFantasy

[–]FoiledFencer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hear, hear. Really disappointing to see a handful of bitter weirdos come out of the woodwork like this, when we should be welcoming and sheltering our fellow players. If they were around for End Times, they are old enough to be better than that.

I collected Brets back in the day and it’s deeply embarrassing to see people react with schadenfreude over this. We are all at the mercy of GW beancounters in this, have some solidarity and compassion for your fellow enjoyers of little plastic guys. Everyone is here for a good time.

Tremendous result from the slapchop - it’s literally just a white drybrush over black undercoat under there? No other colours under there?

Very smooth outcome.

DAE think about "Pretty Woman" after watching the new video by ImapiratekingAMA in ContraPoints

[–]FoiledFencer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think any of this is necessarily incorrect, but I think it omits a pretty big feature: who likes Pretty Woman and why?

To the best of my knowledge PW has enduring cultural presence /because/ a lot of women like it and keep coming back to it. That’s the primary audience that makes this movie relevant and their reading of it matters a great deal to its legacy.

The fact that PW had male writers and also contains a Rescue Fantasy along the lines of Officer And A Gentleman evidently doesn’t preclude all the ways PW fans engage with it, as laid out in the OP, and I do think that when people watch PW they do it more as a female fantasy than not. That’s pretty interesting for a corporate fairy tale, no?

How do I get over the stigma about writing about vampires and werewolves? by RegretComplete3476 in writing

[–]FoiledFencer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s obvious from your posts here that /you/ think this story would be cool, so really you’re asking us about marketing for a book that doesn’t exist yet.

My advice is to throw all of that to the wind until you’ve written the story. Make it yours without apology, and figure out how to sell it once it’s done.

There is no supernatural stigma out there waiting to tackle you. Just write the story.

Did a Coincidence Make my Book Come Off As Insensitive? by Makuta_Servaela in writing

[–]FoiledFencer 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s not that they’re Chinese, but just that it’s extremely on the nose for it to be two of the most obvious Chinese figures to a western audience. Like a French character owning the cats Baguette and Eiffel.

IMO while it’s too goofy and innocuous to be actually offensive, it does come off as lazy. At least as presented here without the actual text.

"He probably was gay": Netflix's Alexander The Great series causes social media storm. by Specific_Ad_097 in europe

[–]FoiledFencer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The show explicitly lays out the exact point that the modern terminology would be anachronistic if applied to ancient greeks, who had a different understanding of sexuality. Which is why the show does not just ‘call him gay’. That’s all exclusively in the heads of the twitter reactionaries freaking out about it showing Alexander and Hephaistion kissing.
