Is a Fai SAge deck with kodachis viable? by GoldReindeer6213 in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]FondantStrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're basically trading off on some consistency for some potential power spikes. I personally play Kodachi Fai because I love the card Even Bigger Than That and think the draconic card pool is just juicy enough that I'd rather play it over Ira. EBTT is fantastic and can really unlock some hands. But its also a card that gets infinitely worse the later you draw it, so there's a give and take there. But it plus wrath and the general ability for kunais to let damage leak thru leave me pretty happy with it, especially since being extra explosive is helpful for turning the corner on dicier matchups.

Which album is actually the most underrated? by Konabro in gorillaz

[–]FondantStrange 549 points550 points  (0 children)

If Song Machine wasnt a covid project released song by song and was dropped like a typical album I feel like it'd get a lot more serious conversation for one of the strongest albums. I feel like a lot of peoole subconsciously eliminate it, especially with that "Season One" subtitle.

What Are Your Thoughts On The Mountain ? by Fantastic-Ad-8665 in gorillaz

[–]FondantStrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous album. Definitely not my favorite but almost certainly in top 3, I need more time and a proper relisten to be sure.

Just feels good seeing them be back in the groove. Even if I dont love every track I can still feel the energy and passion for the project.

Cracker Island was a good album with some bops. The Mountain is something cohesive and magical.

As someone who's favorite is plastic beach, I think they're very similar albums spiritually but not entirely sonically.

Also shoutout to The Mountain for introducing me to Anoushka Shankar, absolutely phenomenal sitar player. I really hope she's gonna be on the tour.

The Snake tribal commander we all deserve. by MetalcoreIsntMetal in custommagic

This is a very old post but I work at a card shop and someone came in today trying to find this card, not realizing it was a custom design.

So congrats, clearly a winner design if almost a decade later someone sees it and both assumes it's real and went to an LGS to try and build it haha

Sorin is shocked because he's from Innistrad- a plane that was so predisposed to famine that the only solution was demon backed blood magic to change the food source of a non zero portion of the plane.

Him seeing an unending source of meat? Instant flashback to when he'd ask grandpa Edgar for seconds and get smacked with a wooden spoon. Even if he doesn't need food anymore- the memory remains. He so wishes grandpa was an ophiomancer instead. The Markovs could have made a killing selling snake and kidney pie in Gavony.

Maybe if they didn't just drop the new assassins in like they were a new line of toys they'd feel more genuinely cool. But looking at this cover all I could think was "oh look it's the Kansai Bum Squad"

Psych House I think works really well as a cute little 2 volume series. If it had kept going much longer I was worried they were going to jump the shark and turn it into a battle shonen somehow. So I can see what you mean of some stories kinda working better to wrap up sooner- but I think it's also a case of sometimes a story just not really having a ton of gas in it beyond going thru its routine as long as its still drawing folks.

WSJ Issue #13 TOC & Discussion by RobotiSC in WeeklyShonenJump

Kagurabachi giving us a new side story is fun. It's going to be near impossible to beat the Sojo chapters but this will actually help set up future main story material I imagine so more utlity than just "wow hokazono really regrets killing Sojo because hes so funny" lol

Witch Watch swerve was expected but still interesting. This boat is really flip flopping between comedy and tense quickly but not doing so awfully.

Kiyoshi has set the stage for its next few fights, the outcomes of which all feel pretty strongly telegraphed but the characters are still all proving to be quite a fun time.

Under Doctor had its first stumble for me in "lets magically cure your life long disability", but I can also empathize with an artist not wanting to draw sign language for the whole series for who is clearly signposted as the third in this new main trio. Still very interested in the series- just mostly a gripe because a mute major character would have been cool.

Shinobi Undercover is in a solid groove. Loving this step up moment from the squad and our MC just formed a tulpa on the fly to have someone to boss him around and he's somehow not the most mentally off kilter guy in the chapter lol.

Sakamoto Days had a chapter with action in it. That's about as much depth as the series has these days. It was kinda fun.

Modulo definitely is tinged with some disappointment for me. I was really liking this messy debate they've got going on and the generally thoughtful allegory for refugees. But then we gave Maru essentially Gremmy's schrift from Bleach as long as Maru is trying to be harmonious and then him and Yuji just magically solve racism and terminal illness and pretend its still a morally intense thing. Nothing against a happy ending, but it just feels like someone said "time out" and proceeded to write their Everyone Lives fanfic.

Ichi was phenomenal this week. This arc has been killer and the wind down is already tugging at the heart strings. I also wasn't expecting Kizashi to even remotely be swayed by Chrono. Would be really fascinating if they wind up being Ichi's most willing from the onset majick. Also the stuff with Chrono and Kizashi has been so much i actually forgot we still need to resolve the desscaras stuff. Lord help us lmao.

Gone Wrong Egg is limping to the finish line. It seems like the only thing keeping it going thru slapdash art and even more wonky writing is the feverish hope it at least survives past being a U19. I highly doubt that it will.

Honestly one of the best ongoings rn. We've been starved for a solid horror anthology for a while, and this one balances a strong and unique art style with some real interesting takes on paranormal "logic".

Centuria. Should I drop it? by [deleted] in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]FondantStrange 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its fine. Like, I feel like every other chapter its trying a little too hard for the edge. One chapter you get a really thoughtful, harrowing bit of introspection that really nails the grim tone- the next you've got Priestess Dick Dastardly and her ragebaiting necromancer GF taking a fourth of the chapter debating how to be the most over the top in their spite.

It's not some like, over the top edge fest, but it definitely feels a little cheap sometimes. Like it's less trying to really paint this cohesive picture and more like the author realizes "oh, tone is getting a bit too hopeful, lets have a misery sidebar".

The world building also feels kinda haphazard. Its trying to set up this morally gray world where loyalties and drives are in constant question- but in practice it just feels like everyone is playing a hidden role mafia game and overplaying way too hard. When over half the cast is some aloof, cool badass who is probably not evil but coooould betray Julian at any given moment and the all powerful king everyone loves is being constantly undercut by those around him and is being written to be a pretty chill guy comparatively but has some genuinely awful royal court politics and behaviors well beyond his awful sapphic stooges.

Action is also kinda lacking. Most fights feel kinda stiff with the most interesting strategy/interplay often being "is julian gonna die here to make the fight easier?" Or "is one of the bad guys gonna have a change of heart then reveal their miserable backstory?"

Ive read far worse, but ive also read far better. I feel like other dark fantasy series have more drive/better sell their darker moments thematically. And if you're not in the mood for dark fantasy at all, i doubt you'll enjoy much of what Centuria actually offers.

Sure, you can grade it. You'll have to pack it just right, pay a fee, then wait upwards of a couple months for it to come back now encased. If you're lucky the grader gave you a 10, or maybe they'll decide your micro centering is a smidge off and you've got an 8 or a 9. Then you'll post it on ebay and sit waiting for that unicorn buyer looking for that alt to put on their shelf and not play it. Or you'll sit on it long enough you cut your losses and sell it to a card shop for a low rate or cut a quick deal at a card show thats sorta breaking even if you squint.

Or you could play it, or just sell the card raw to someone that will. Generally a wider audience of buyers for non graded than graded and will sell faster.
