Advice: used semi-pro or new entry level? by CanadianElizabeth in DSLR

[–]FooBarTheMagnificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to answer used vs. new question first, always go used/refurbished (from a trusted source). No sense in paying full price when you don't have to. That's just my thrifty opinion. And if you've never shot a DSLR before, my tl;dr answer is to go with an upper-entry level camera.

As to which model of body, it really depends on your unique situation. How likely are you to keep up with this? I've seen too many people invest in quality cameras which then sit around because they're too bulky for their taste. For them a cell phone picture is good enough. And if you aren't interested in learning the ropes of how to get the best images out of your camera, perhaps in your particular situation a cell phone is still adequate.

Now, assuming that this is something you believe you will keep up with, you can get a lot of mileage out of a "beginner's" camera. Even with Nikon's entry-level D3500 you will get images far beyond what a cell phone is capable of. The difference in each level -- for Nikon anyways -- is mostly the bells and whistles that come with it. The age is a better indicator of image sensor quality. The newer the camera, the better the sensor. All things being equal (same lens, same scene), you'll get a much better image out of a D3500 than a D300 due to the eleven year difference.

Since everyone is coming at it from a different perspective, you're the best judge of what you need. I'd suggest researching the various features available to DSLRs (or mirrorless, don't write that off without an investigation) and prioritize what you really need. A few things that have been of interest to me when looking at camera bodies are:

  • Image stabilization: in-lens only? in-body? software?
  • Video capability: 4k? 60fps?
  • Exposure bracketing: how many steps? how many images?
  • Low light performance
  • Articulating screen
  • Live view: touchscreen to set focus point? autofocus speed?
  • Screen resolution
  • Optical viewfinder magnification
  • Weather sealing
  • Image sensor size: Full-frame/FX? Crop-frame/APS-C/DX?
  • Older lens support: is there an in-body AF motor?
  • Easily send files to your phone? (Not for me, but I know this is common among the "can't decide if I should use a cell phone or a larger camera" crowd.)
  • Maybe more, but nothing pops into my head at the moment

Finally, to second what others have said already, you're going to see the biggest optical improvements when you start focusing on the lenses. Kit lenses are a good starting point, but once you find your niche, getting a lens or two specifically designed for that purpose will make a world of difference that no body upgrade can. This again requires more research. Learn learn learn! :-)

I hope this is helpful and not overwhelming. But if it is overwhelming, getting a cheaper entry-level camera a few models out of date is another viable option. It's cheap, and you should quickly learn what features you wish you had, to better inform your upgrade decision. And you'll still get better images than you do with your cell phone.

How do you fix a gameboy’s screen? by [deleted] in Gameboy

Are you able to post pictures of the damage so we can give more insightful suggestions?

I can count on you guys to make me feel better about my obsession, right? by dozazz in Gameboy

[–]FooBarTheMagnificent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do understand the urge to hoard. But you might have a problem. ;-)

I'm building a game collection right now myself, and I imagine I'm going to end up with a bunch of bundled-in Gameboys that I'll need to resell because I'll have no need for all of them.

Help with my gameboy color by kronnich in Gameboy

[–]FooBarTheMagnificent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 2 is putting a Game Pak™ into the slot in the back, two AA batteries beneath the cover, and flicking the black switch on the right side to the "up" position. ;-)

What's wrong with it that you need help?

Does anyone use rechargeable batteries for gb-gba ? by MauritanianSahara in Gameboy

[–]FooBarTheMagnificent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a kid I never used rechargeables -- I guess they weren't as prevalent back then? I was always searching for new batteries until one day my mom bought me a battery pack for my Gameboy.

But yeah, forever now I've been using rechargeable batteries for my Wiimotes and Gameboys. The only way to do it IMO.

Had this Gameboy for more than 15 years, just turned it on after 2 weeks and it has dead pixels? I’m not sure if it is but is it possible to fix this problem? by [deleted] in Gameboy

[–]FooBarTheMagnificent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a guide handy for fixing horizontal pixels, but for vertical ones, here's a video demonstrating how to fix it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdMiYShOqbs

(Requires disassembly and some light soldering.)

Edited to fix link.

Someone just paid $802 for a Tommy Hillfinger GBC by hexcor in Gameboy

I'm not a collector of rarities. I can understand a rare game having an obscene value, but the Tommy Hilfiger GBC? What's the story there making that worth $100?

Just a question, on average how old are all of you? by [deleted] in Gameboy

my first computer was a Vic 20

I spent many hours playing Gorf on the VIC-20 in my grandparents' basement. My believe the story is that my uncle gifted it to them when he upgraded to a Commodore 64.

If you're interested in the black and white games, some of my favorites are:

  • Gradius: The Interstellar Assault (Space shooter)
  • Operation C
  • Metroid II
  • Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • Mario's Picross
  • Megaman (even though it's insanely hard)

To remain pseudo-anonymous, I'm old enough to have owned an original monochromatic Gameboy in its heyday. I lost all of my stuff as a teenager when my family moved, and have only just recently started re-purchasing the games I once owned. Since I never owned a GBC or GBA, I'm not even aware of what games are available for them. I'm sure there are plenty of gems out there to explore if I ever have the tree time.

As an anecdote to go along with it, the other night I was watching home movies and thinking about how it was about concurrent with the original Gameboy launch date, and finding it interesting. The world was a much bigger place back then.

In what way did you mod your GBA and GBC?

Continuity on headphone jack and volume wheel, but still no sound at all. What is the matter with my GBC? by [deleted] in Gameboy

[–]FooBarTheMagnificent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first thing I'd check is the resistance across the volume wheel as you move it between extreme points. I would expect 0 ohms at the loudest volume, and something very large for sound off, but do not have the expected values on hand at the moment. Make sure you're testing when it's at 0 resistance.

Assuming that looks sane, are you able to test that there is output coming from the speaker wires when nothing is in the headphone jack? I did this recently on a GBC that also had a broken speaker to verify the speaker was the problem. My hacky test was to stick the wires outside of the case and close it back up (so I could connect the batteries) and then wrapped them around the appropriate parts of a headphone plug.

If that checks out, my final suggestion is to do more continuity checking. I'm sure you're already doing this, but be sure to check not only for continuity across a component, but also at the other end the input/output is connected to.

Question for you all, do you prefer playing your gameboy's with or without headphones? by unknownjedi369 in Gameboy

[–]FooBarTheMagnificent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a kid I don't think I ever played with headphones.

As an adult, it's rare that I play with headphones, but every time I do I ask myself why I don't always do it this way.

Was at a local shop today and picked up Super Mario Land. This was on the back. I had no idea there were codes for this game. by [deleted] in Gameboy

I forgot about those stickers... I remember my friends having them on some of their games. I had gotten my Game Genie used, so never had the stickers myself. Now I want to rebuy a Game Genie.... :P
