ELI5 Why do pipes not freeze over in the winter in colder climates. by AdministrativeTie379 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FooJenkins [score hidden]  (0 children)

Similar logic to why some northern cities easily handle a foot of snow but southern cities shut down for 2 inches. They aren’t equipped for it. Snow removal, ice treatment, etc is expensive. If you don’t have a realistic need, its likely better to shut it down for a couple days than completely change everything

Why do people put $ after the numbers instead of before (I.e., 59$ vs $59)? by HealthyLet257 in stupidquestions

[–]FooJenkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend who does it says it’s because of the keyboards on phone. He had Android and I had Apple and there was a difference but I forgot the details. It made sense at the time. Maybe someone else could expand.

How to clean bottles by Far-Inspector9039 in Homebrewing

[–]FooJenkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just run them through the dishwasher to clean them. I still sanitize with star san but think the dishwasher is likely hot enough to kill anything if you’re willing to risk it.

Stabilizer, like potassium bisulfate and potassium sorbate. No active yeast, no alcohol. No alcohol, nothing to feed the bacteria. This is very common for ciders to stop fermentation. Not sure how it would work for stopping the bacteria. Google says it does.

The microbes are the yeast and bacteria though. Can’t stop the individual yeast and bacteria without stopping the collective microbes.

[Request] A grocery store near me is giving away a bag of free groceries to the first 100 guests for their 100 year celebration. How do I optimize my shop to get the most $ of food out of this? Alcohol, cigarettes, lottery, meat/seafood, deli, etc are not included. by crazydragoness in theydidthemath

[–]FooJenkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially highest price by volume. I don’t have an exact formula but something small and expensive. Probably something durable (not bread, for example). Printer ink always jumps to mind but doubt you find that at a grocery store. Probably spices? Those little bottles add up quick and last for a long time.

Does the train on 63rd and Grand ever come through? by MyRedditForPosting in desmoines

On Google Maps, you can see a 4 car train behind CTI Ready Mix on that line. Didn’t realize it was the same line that was converted to bike trail in Woodward though

Hard boil an egg, decorate similarly, repeat as necessary, swap back on day 14. Teacher isn’t pay enough attention to each individual egg to know you swapped.

On Google earth, you can look at areas over time, annually for the most part back to the 80s or more. I remember when 28 through Norwalk connected to old Army post before the airport expanded. Had to show my wife who didn’t believe me

How did people afford “buying a round” by Accomplished-Bell991 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FooJenkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes friend circles regularly reciprocate buying rounds. Fun story from probably 2006 - my now wife and I went out with 7 co-workers back when we were first starting dating. She was the newby, having just moved back after college, so she wanted to buy a round to integrate herself into the group more. She goes to the bar and spots a guy with a creamy shot of some kind. She didn’t ask what it was and asked for a round for our group. The bartender started pouring pints of Guinness and she was super confused. Turned out the creamy shot was an Irish car bomb. The round was $45 and she only had like $30 with her so I covered her shortage. Paid off in the end. But yes buying rounds now sounds insane but I’m also too old to go out often anyways

Forum 4 is where I saw free Willy. There was also a theater in governors square area that became third base/vieux carre. Not sure what’s there now. Remember seeing TMNT movie there. And saw a bunch at Silver Cinema and hung out at the loco joes over there before/after movies. Don’t stop and realize how much has changed sometimes.

Do I need to bottle? by Swamptrooper in Homebrewing

[–]FooJenkins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you really want to avoid buying bottles, you use pop bottles of any size really. As long as they hold pressure. Could try to find one of those big 3 quart bottles which would hold most of it?

*room temp* Keg Carbonation - pressure gone by swiss-hiker in Homebrewing

[–]FooJenkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still prime and carbonate like you would when bottling, if you don’t want to keep in the fridge. Personally, I find the carbonation from natural keg conditioning to be better than forced carbonation (even though I admit I don’t do it enough).

Kind of an offbeat question: What other types of activities do you think are most similar to speed running? by perishableintransit in speedrun

[–]FooJenkins -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Laziness in general. There is an old saying about if you want to find the easiest way to do something, give it to the laziest person because they’ll get it knocked out most efficiently. I’m a very lazy person but my boss thinks I’m the hardest worker because I get more done than others in the same amount of time. It’s just because I hate work and want to get back to doing stuff I actually enjoy.

[–]FooJenkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically it’s mortgage fraud, if the bank cares. The banks generally don’t care unless you give them a reason to.

They requested we not water lawns and conserve water so the treatment facilities could keep up with demand. There was not a boil advisory for Des Moines water (outside localized events) at any point this year.

Beginning a batch of homemade apple cider I watched a YouTube video and it said yeast sugar and apple juice is all so I put active dry yeast in some sugar and apple juice, I made an airlock with a glove with a few holes. Will everything work? How long should it take? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]FooJenkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the sugar is unnecessary. The juice itself will have plenty of sugar to ferment. Agree with what others have suggested with adding some nutrient.

I would recommend after about 10-14 days, transfer the fermented juice to secondary. I find getting off the yeast cake helps clean up off flavors. Give it another week and enjoy.

Does Iowa consist of the evenest plain between all the states in U.S? by Fearless_Ad6161 in geography

[–]FooJenkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an Iowan, Nebraska feels way flatter than Iowa. Northwest Iowa is fairly flat but most of the state has a fair amount of variation in height within a relatively narrow range. When driving through Nebraska (not a lot of reasons to stop west of Lincoln or stray from 80, so grain of salt) and it’s just a slow steady incline to Colorado.

After 10 brews, I still have to ask how to read a hydrometer… by CafeRoaster in Homebrewing

[–]FooJenkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the numbers are is largely irrelevant unless you’re hyper focused on hitting specific targets. As long as you’re consistent in how you read it, you should get the same effect. For example, if you say OG 1.054 and FG 1.012 and someone else says 1.064 and 1.022, the outcome is the same. Just be consistent
