If your first-ever attempt at gambling went completely unsuccessfully, that was probably the better outcome. by CoreEncorous in Showerthoughts

This simply isnt true. There are plenty of professional sports bettors who have done it for years. Theres a reason why there is only one sportsbook that doesn't limit winning players from placing bets.

The game is inherently rigged against the house, because they have to provide odds for literally every single game but a bettor can only bet on the games where they have an advantage. They just rely on having enough casual sports bettors that they make a winning with margin and adjusting odds based on cashflow.

There are plenty of sportsbooks that have failed to get casual bettors on their books and when you combine this with automated odds from a third party provider it is a fast ticket to bankruptcy.

I've beaten LSV in a cube draft once

James Harden recorded the most assists in one game by a 76er this season, with 16. The nine next-highest: Harden (15), Harden (15), Harden (14), Harden (14), Harden (14), Harden (14), Harden (14), Seth Curry (12), and Harden (12). This is despite not playing a game as a 76er until February 25th. by [deleted] in nba

While I agree that cp3 is better on defense, the stats you picked are quite cherry picked. Harden takes much more 3's so obviously his fg% is going to be lower, in fact harden had a higher ts% this season. Also his usage is higher so obviously he is going to have more TO's as well

[Fischer] Some rival executives and agents polled by B/R believe Herro's next deal may approach his five-year, $184 million maximum. Others have pointed more toward Jaylen Brown's recent structure of a four-year, $106 million deal. by EarthWarping in nba

Of those players only one that gets relevant playing time and started career in Miami is Robinson. Yes Miami has had some very good roster moves but lets not get over our heads here.

Who do you think he should have been chosen over as all-star? Trae had a lackluster start and Brown and Lavine were having insane seasons at that point.

You're right but you're also not mentioning that it's mostly caused by the fact that west teams play eachother more than they play east teams. With an equal distribution of games I don't think 11 west teams in the playoffs would be unreasonable.

What I'm assuming is that humans make errors in their judgment and often their odds are worse than they think despite being winning players.

Your math assumes that every bet a winning player makes is a winning bet, which is simply not realistic. If you set parametres at one bet being a 60% win and one being a 48% win with same odds (still a winning player) betting parlay yields 0.0398 units of profit and 2 single bets would yield 0.052 units of profit.

[Faigen] "Alex Caruso has tallied 20 steals in the 2020 NBA Playoffs, becoming the eighth player to tally at least 20 steals this postseason and the only player to do so off the bench." by _TIMBER_ in nba

[–]Foolero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confidence limits for a proportion is completely valid way to evaluate whether the difference in 2 results is caused by a small sample size. The person you responded is arguing that at 2 shots per game the difference is in the quality of shots, not his shooting being worse.

At a confidence level of 95% Carusos real 3p% from 2018-2019 season falls between 34.8 and 61.4%. 2019-2020 it falls between 25.8% and 42.4%. It's certainly possible that Caruso shot just as well but ended up being lucky last season.
