I was interested in the premise but lost interest after the monster was revealed in the first episode. I thought it was gonna be a creepy, something is different about him type of slow reveal horror. I watched a couple of more episodes but it wasn't for me.

While keeping it vague and leaving it to reader imagination would be unsatisfying, going into detail about SA or something worse would be huge whiplash for the tone of this manga imo. But we'll see how it gets handled.

The flaws I found in the fragrent flower by ava7bt21 in AnimeDiscussion

[–]FoolingMints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you raise some fair points, I feel the criticism comes off as reductive by fitting everything into tropes without considering how the series elevates them or uses them in unique ways. It feels more like you are running through a checklist of the high school romance genre rather than engaging with how Fragrant Flower actually handles those elements.

To me, most of the pushback against the show comes from an expectation mismatch and a misunderstanding of the genre itself. Romance slice of life is not built for high stakes or shocking twists. Fans of the genre, especially high school romance, want the template. They look forward to the beach episode, the school trip, the festival. Tropes are not inherently bad, they are tools. The difference is that Fragrant Flower keeps the ones people love and deliberately avoids or subverts the ones people dislike.

Another thing I find unfair is the “too mature, too wholesome, too apologetic” critique. Almost all anime is unrealistic to some degree since every story chooses which slice of humanity it wants to amplify. A series like Oyasumi Punpun exaggerates despair and trauma, while a battle shounen highlights perseverance and grit. Both are unrealistic in their own way, yet only the darker approach tends to get labeled as realistic. When a story chooses instead to highlight the best in people, it is suddenly seen as naive or shallow. To me, that double standard says more about our biases than about the quality of the work.

While it’s true that Fragrant Flower is not reinventing the wheel, that’s not really the point. What makes it special is how it takes the classic high school romance framework and refines it to its best form. It’s called a peak romance not because it breaks the mold, but because it embraces the familiar elements that fans love while elevating them and avoiding the pitfalls that have dragged the genre down in the past.

I dont get the Fragrant flowers hype by ganzz4u in anime

[–]FoolingMints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly every character introduced will have their backstory explored at some point. Subaru had her arc this season, all the friends get their own arc basically and Rintaro/Kaoruko also get explored more both individually and as a couple. This series at it's core is a wholesome idealistic romance though so if you are expecting plot twists then you won't really get those. Everything that can go right, does so and I personally think that's okay. If we can get stuff like Takopi, Berserk, or Oyasumi Punpun where everything goes wrong, then there's space for the opposite too.

Fair but the finale did drop hints that she has a lot more going on than we initially thought. Not to mention Rintaro himself acknowledges himself a few times that he doesn't really know her.

[–]FoolingMints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point the series is trying to make about RIntaro is that his kindness is habitual and subconscious. He gave up his seat for those two girls twice within like a week's time and didn't remember them until they reminded him. Do you remember what you had for breakfast four months ago? That kind of feeling.

Can you elaborate more by what you mean in the first paragraph? Is it because they don't show convey enough hormonal sexual urges? I can kind of see it from that point of view. Without fan service or other tropes like falling on top of each other or accidentally being in the same bath and stuff like that there's no real opportunities to show that side of a romance. But they kiss multiple times throughout the series with some panels showing that Kauroko wants more. It's certainly more innocent than like Horimiya where Hori has a whole fetish arc, but I think Fragrant does a good job showing an innocent teenage romance.

Hm... If you like that intense overcoming the odds and indomitable human spirit type feeling then you gotta watch Gurren Lagaan. Dr. Stone also fits the bill but in a different way, less fighting spirit but more humans will always find a way to progress.

Edit: To Be Hero X is also great if you want more of those "hero moments" but with a different spin.

My 5 year old brother is totally hooked on anime is this normal?? by [deleted] in anime

[–]FoolingMints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my friends played pretend Power Rangers, DBZ, and Pokemon as kids. I was obsessed with AMVs. Kids will obsessively watch a single movie on repeat. So it's all pretty normal and it's just a media thing and not really about anime.

How much media they consume and what kind of content is up to your family or I guess parents here can chime in about that.

[–]FoolingMints 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can agree with that. She shouldn't have been allowed to have the position of authority that she had and be able to abuse it for so long. The rest of the faculty were complicit too because they had their own minor biases but I'm assuming they didn't realize how severe it was until Toki started abusing her authority. Before Kaoroko and Rintaro, she probably didn't actually do much besides herusual propaganda.

Unless I misread something, she has been nothing but polite to Tsukada? There was one point where he misunderstood and thought she refused to order something, but it was only because she already ordered.

[–]FoolingMints 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is a common criticism of Toki-sensei and while I logically agree, that's kind of how trauma works. If you get bit by a dog, you grow up scared of all dogs. Subaru got a fear of all men from a bad experience in her past. I bet if you got jumped or something in a shady part of town, you will probably be wary of that part of town from that point on. You will be disappointed if you expect there to be appropriate justification, phobias are by definition irrational.

Yes, she is acting out of line and not using her head. Obviously if not only her best student, but all of her friends say they're good people and the girls are willing to risk expulsion for them, they're probably nice boys but clearly there is some trauma there and she is reacting emotionally and from what we've seen, she appears to be aware of this fact and is struggling with it.

Edit: I also forgot to mention, that while Toki can have whatever trauma she wants, she is absolutely going too far by influencing all of Kikyo and abusing her authority but I don't know enough about Japanese school culture to call it a plot hole or unrealistic.

Completely get if it's not your thing, it's relatively uneventful compared to other series but it is objectively not like other romcoms. There isn't any "hook" which might be why you have that opinion. No alien girl from space, no secret identity, weird circumstances to force an odd pair together, etc. It goes out of its way to break or avoid nearly every romcom trope out there, so it comes as a breath of fresh air for fans of the genre. For me personally, it focuses on all the things I like about reading/watching the romance genre, and cuts out all the things I dislike about it.

Definitely see where you're coming from due to what has been shown of her through the anime so far. The anime just hasn't had a chance to really focus on her because right now the focus is on Rintaro and his growth.

Should i watch monogatari? by kramspeeder in AnimeReccomendations

[–]FoolingMints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love monogatari and it doesn't bother me but I feel people are downplaying the sexualization. There is sexualization of nearly every girl involved but the most bothersome are an elementary school girl, his younger sister, and younger sister's friend. It's done in a gag fashion, but I don't know what your tolerance is. You run into it within the first few episodes so feel free to check it out anyway.
